Yes, Better Help can be very trash! Great for minor mental health issues but most of the therapists aren't qualified to do the things they do. I was wrongly 'diagnosed' with bipolar even though my therapist wasn't a psychiatrist. Went the traditional route and yes, it's more expensive, but I've actually got the help I need in a shorter time - and I definitely don't have bipolar.

A couple weeks ago, I started feeling more hopeful about AI tools. Books didn’t kill speaking. The internet didn’t kill books. Search engines didn’t kill research. AI won’t kill original work. We just have to be mindful, be careful, and demand legal controls. Like, the fact that these tools are performing plagiarism is wrong. That’s misuse of a tool that has a lot of potential for good.

I'm a poet and a writer, and I'm genuinely scared that AI can and will take our jobs as artists. People say it won't because 'the feelings are not there' but that's not actually true. I had a concept of writing a song using a certain phrase, but I couldn't really come up with anything else than that one particular phrase at that time, so I asked the GPTChat to write me a song using that particular phrase and what I've got scared the sh*t out of me. It was good when it came to the form and the expression itself was mind-blowing, it was horrifying to me how good it was. I was depressed for the next two days because I felt I wasn't needed anymore as an artist, since people can just type their idea and ask the chatbot to write the whole thing for them.
@Alison-jp1bk Жыл бұрын
I’ve had the same issue with academics. Students are using chat GPT to do assignments and write essays - and it’s work is just as good as mine if not significantly better. Now I’m at the stage of thinking what is the point of doing it myself? But while typing this I realise that the reason I’m studying is for myself and to expand my own mind. Just as your poetry and writing is for yourself and to express yourself. Maybe we both need to reassess the reasons why we chose to do these things in the first place?

For artists, AI is extremely scary, especially because we have little hope that AI creators will respect the work of actual human artists - the doomsday scenario is happening already. There has already been a huge controversy with Midjourney, which has access to a whole database of human-made art and it uses it as it's learning material. These artists were never asked for consent and there are already options to create art looking specifically in the style of a single artist, to the point it's indistinguishable. Another example of artists being screwed over is DeviantArt deadass giving AI access to all of its database, yet again without informing the users! Considering that art is already so underpaid and disrespected as a profession, the arrival of AI and its consequences are making me livid. It's getting hard to keep any motivation to hold on.

Artist POV: I’ve been working on my portfolio for a while now, and honestly I’ve gone from looking at AI as a shiny new toy, to the apocalypse and back again. I’ve reached the point of begrudged intrigue. It’s honestly motivated me to get more into traditional art and incorporating it into my digital illustrations bc human touches and flaws ground the work; makes it seem more real (imo). Seeing the revel and backlash towards the tech shows quite a divide among people (in many facets of life, not just AI). The internet rewards inflammatory, black and white thinking and there never seems to be nearly enough nuance in the greys. As for the clothes, I think these people know how shite their clothes are, but it doesn’t matter bc it’s all through the eye of a filtered phone camera. It’s about perception over reality. This is what truly worries me about online perspectives, at what point does the physical not matter, bc the cheap polish of the digital is what’s displayed? I feel this way about AI too, it’ll be a powerful tool, but a terrible crutch as well (I fear that there will be a lot of regurgitative talking heads and artificial ‘yes’ men). Everything’s a double-edged sword and I hope as time passes; people will see this innovation with a more critical eye. Use the tools at your disposal, don’t let them use you. The people behind this technology wear a mask of progress, but the goal is profit; AI will chew you up and spit you back out once it’s done with you. Random anecdotes: I’m glad you’re developing a more positive outlook on the future (even if you think it’s delusional rip), it’s so easy to get swept away by doomsday thinking, so thank you for sharing a slice of hope on the internet. I once found a silk, linen Worth Blazer (House of Worth 90s revival) at my thrift store. There was no tag on it so the lady gave it to me for three dollars!! I’ve only worn it once, but goddamn does it fit me like a glove. The generated ageless self is an absolutely horrifying concept, kind of like those Vtuber anime girls being run by otaku men. Humans should be allowed to be human, not a shiny, plastic product, (but I’ve always been a grouchy old soul since I’ve been born, so what do I know lol) Hope you’re doing well, and that AI assists you in evolving your creative needs. Keep adapting, this world won’t allow stagnation anyway.

Oh my friggin god, THANK YOU! for talking about the bad taste of fast fashion. I feel the same way, even just taking a walk outside and looking at people is so depressing to me. But it is part of the degenerated un-culture we see in many formerly creative expressions - just look at the thing they call architecture these days. It is insulting. What I find most important in relation to this is the simple fact that what we are surrounded by influences us, colors, forms, scents, sound, and I bet we will be very surprised in the near future what else influences us that we have been unaware of, like emf... But even just addressing the obvious - we need to live in an inspiring environment with fashion and architecture that calls us into our own creative expression. On the contrary to what we have seen lately, which rather is a form of minimalist conformity that somehow only lends its parts from exactly the most profane and uninteresting of each fashion era. Power to unique creative expression, power to expressing what your soul really wants to say. Power to truth. Power to finding yourself in whatever you do instead of only seeking someone else's cheaply bought approval. To me this all goes back to what I always feel, everything you do needs to come from your devotion to find out who you really are without all conditioning, to truly know thyself, and have your actions, be it your style, be an honest expression of that journey home to yourself, your true self. Not the person you should be or think you would like to be. The world must be informed by our true colors. That is how we make it beautiful.

I really see your and Kristen's point with fast fashion, but I feel like there has also been a change in how many young people engage with it these past few years, at least in my circle it's been a big point to find thrifted clothes and exchange or gift away the things we no longer want/need, which has also led to much more creativity in our self expression. One little detail,the fact that even the peasants were wearing more durable clothes had to do with practicality mainly(it sounds ironic since they are more uncomfortable than contemporary clothes but let me explain) but many more other reasons.first they had to be durable and last longer because they were living under worse conditions in their houses and in the fields.secondly,they did not have any other option.the fabrics we consider luxurious now (wool etc)were their only option.there was no plastic and no machines to make them.and lastly,on that machinic aspect,they had much more time in their hands to produce clothes and because nothing was automated they were putting all their effort to make them durable.

I've been drawing my whole life, and for almost 5 years now I've been a tattoo artist (that tattooes only my own designs that I drew, not stealing designs from pictures from pinterest). I think that currently it's easier and more accessible to create art and share art than ever before, which is really great. The downside is that the competition is much bigger though, and it can be hard to get your art seen because there is just so much of it everywhere, and so many people repost or copy art without crediting the original artist. This downside though in my opinion is outweighted by the pros. And then... here comes the AI art which is a fairly new thing I guess, and it scares many artists a lot, and rightfully so. Because creating art is a very human activity, it rquires imagination, planning, and a set of skills that an average person does not possess, and also it involves a lot of emotions. If I may speak for all artists: I like doing art, I like drawing, it's my job, I love it, and I don't want AI to do this job for me. I'd rather AI to do parts of the job for me that I don't enjoy, such as for example listing hashtags, managing social media, doing my taxes. We do not need AI to make cheap fast art (that is also just a rip-off collage of works done by actual artists). We need to pay artists a fair wage and appreciate their work. Thank you, Kristen, for another great video! 💗💗

Tax people also need jobs and we do much more than just putting numbers together! I understand you find it boring but for me it's as fun to do your tax than for you is drawing. The world should be about human connections and you come to me to help you with your taxes I come to you for art, and we interact as human beings! Do not disregard the work of others because you don't undestand it. AI should help humans , not substitute them.

I do agree with a lot about what you're saying - but I do think what you say about fashion can in some ways apply the a lot of art at the moment too. Marvel churning out the fast fashion equivalent of films. My mum is applying for art universities and they are saying that if she wants to learn certain disciplines she'll have to look outside the course, or just try working in the dark - there isn't as much or as obvious passing down of traditional skills so instead of pushing those art forms fowards you're stuck having to recreate the basics. BUT YES I'm looking at the smaller homegrown punkier art scenes locally and am filled with hope. We just need to get off the internet and make stuff in the real world together.

So no I'm not excited about the AI being so much faster at producing stolen art in seconds. However I do use it occassionally when I need a quick image inspo of what I have in my head, to help me boost my creativity. It's great for that and I think that should be the use of it, help professionals do their work faster by minimising the tedious steps. Regulate the art that's been fed to it by paying loyalties to the artists, and be illegal to fire/replace professionals for prompt designers. There is so much good that AI can offer, if it's regulated by proper laws.

I'm from Eastern Europe, Romania more exactly and what I noticed regarding the relation people have with thrift stores is that poor people will often rather buy new stuff. I think this might be because of the desire to feel and look somewhat rich. You don't want to give off poor vibes. These people often have expensive phones and live in shacks. All this has to do with lack of education and, ofc, consumerist culture and the strong wish to get out of poverty.

Obviously you used chatGPT for a high level overview of widely known and accessible details but this is a friendly PSA from your local software engineer that AI/algos cannot be trusted for facts as it learns everything it knows from us biased humans

Of course! Everything was fact checked and as I mentioned it was only used to assist in the beginning of the video and to demonstrate the possibilities of ai 😉

TBH, no. this vid made me stressed. oof. i hate the idea of Ai and feel totally unnerved by the idea that i could be watching someone i think is real only to find out they are an Ai generated image. ew. i just crave authenticity these days which has actually made me much happier. i know where to focus and just try to mostly tune out social media and all that comes with it. i always appreciate your take though as it gets me thinking!! :) ♡

Hi Kristen, lovely to see you back! I like how you're making having access to all information in the world sound so amazing! Because it is, and recently I feel like this perspective shifted to it being our doom basically. Which is also kind of true, because it's very addictive and makes us worry about things that don't affect us at all. I think we just need to find a middle ground in how we're viewing the technological advancement in order to have a healthy relationship with it. I'm in a moment where I'm entering into textiles industry and I find it really scary since I know it is one of the worst industries environmentally speaking. I've met people who were surprised with my choice because of how much sustainability means to me. And I can kind of see it; why would a person who hasn't bought a new item in 10 years, go into textiles and fashion. But to be honest that's exactly the reason. I think that in order to change something you need to know it inside out. And maybe change seems almost impossible from where we are now but I'd like to think that I'm determined enough to at least try. I'd like to be optimistic about AI but I find it really hard. One of my dreams from childhood was to make books illustrations, and I'm scared that it's gonna become very hard in the near future. I always believed that art was the only thing machines won't be able to do. It's amazing how fast the world is progressing. The thing I believed so strongly in 10, even 5 years ago, seems ridiculous right now. But I guess progress is inevitable and we can either worry ourselves about it to death or try to evolve alongside it.

Ah, Kristen! This video is so good! I appreciate you used the ChatGPT for the history lesson. Lovely clips in between. I appreciate your side notes through it all. Let the new renaissance start and grow into an ever greater world with less capitalism, less fast fashion, less misogyny, and more healthy environments. Wishing you a lovely day!

I'm glad you provided the disclaimer early on that you didn't do much research, because this video was an insult to everyone dealing with everything about capital that you ignored, which is actually most people. This was almost a Lynette Adkins level of celebrating elements of capital that seem fun as though it isn't inextricably linked to all the rest.

Really love this channel and most of the content here is amazing… but I think I agree. Also the summary of the renaissance and the coming to terms with willful ignorance (“it bores me”) just kind of made me sad 🥲 (and confused)

Hi Kristen, I think as long as KZbin ads are still so badly tailored to the individual (why do I keep seeing ads for artificial baby food!!), we don’t have to panic yet…

It's not that you wouldn't have had access to top tier fashion during the Renaissance, it's that you would not have been allowed to wear it. Sumptuary laws restricted certain materials to certain classes. Secondhand clothing was very popular though, and often servants would be given their master's castoffs. Clothes could go trough many wearers precisely because they were so high quality to begin with.

About the fast fashion thing- it's so true that it has degenerated so much. I still occasionally doom scroll asos, and I'll see maybe one in 500 items that I like. Maybe even less haha

I get what you say in general but with the topic of AI, as an artist, I have to disagree. Basically what it does is steal and compile other people's works. And while maybe it saves creators like you a lot of time, it also removes the creative factor. And isn't that what art is all about? Like getting a machine to write your script for me would remove the joy completely of the work. I don't see the 'Renaissance' aspect in that, for Renaissance is by definition a period of social change and creation. Using technology to steal work from writers, artists, etc. and weaponizing it against them doesn't seem like moving forward in my opinion. (Love your optimism and your videos, thought!)

I honestly like (love) your fashion sustainability rants. They give me life and validation and like what I do matter in a world where it wouldn’t even matter if I was here lol I mean like I could just as well not breath and the world would still go downwards ya’know Btw I love my life with all my 2nd hand clothes and dirty air and disgustingly high rent. Just saying

Hey Kirsten and other commenters, Just wanted to add my two cents, just a few thoughts. I don't want to argue with your points, you just made me think and I'd like to share what came to mind. So the historical Renaissance, or re-birth, was the rebirth of a specific line of thinking, that is, that of the ancient greeks'. They lived in an episteme (using the term how Foucault uses it, so the system thought specific to a moment in history, which determines what is thinkable in that moment, and how it is possible to think it) which was characterized by a kind of outwardness, a focus on the natural world, on what the senses teach us of the universe. The ancient greeks' outward episteme died with the emergence of the unified catholic church based in Rome, which from then on determined the episteme of the middle ages. This latter episteme was characterized with a radical inwardness. Instead of finding pleasure in the natural world, instead of holding in high regard our senses, catholicism focused on everything that was inside: the soul, our invisible connection with God, and ethical values. This inward episteme is what explains the unrealistic proportions used in religious paintings from the middle ages for example. They didn't use perspective, for they wanted to get as far away from how our actual sight worked as possible. They thought that our senses, and the world itself was a lie, distracting us from what really mattered: God's invisible world. Renaissance broke with the episteme of the church, and rebirthed, or tried to rebirth the episteme of the ancient greeks: positioning art's gaze outwards again, at the natural world, and showing that there really is beauty in the material world, in how our senses contribute to us sensing the universe. Looking at renaissance as this kind of episteme shift, I'd say we are, in our current historical moment, not really in a rebirth of something old, but instead inside the moment of the whole of humanity struggling to birth something completely new that has never existed before. Yes, we are in a shifting episteme. There are greater and greater forces at play which are trying to shift our episteme, widening it, so it is possible to even think a world outside of capitalism, and the forces opposing these, the raction: trying to tighten the horizon of possible thought so that we stay in this late-capitalist hell, allowing it to tighten our chains more and more. As Gramsci said, a new world is struggling to be born. But now that I think about it again, maybe there is something that is not unlike a rebirth in our historical moment. The 20th century was a great moment for the conceivability of an alternate world from capitalism, but this conceivability, this dream of communism died with the fall of the USSR, and the great sins of the marxist-leninist party which led it, and continoues to lead Chine for example. This conceivability of an alternate system of social relations to bourgoise democratic capitalism is becoming more and more alive again.

About AI y think the risk resides and depends (now a days at least) on a human mind, so what’s terrifying is the idea of it landing in the wrong hands… we’ve seen it in politics, governments and this is the same scary shit.
@Sofiadevirgo Жыл бұрын
I’m saying this because at least until this day AI are being programmed, a perfect example is that one time al AI system confused a black man with a gorila… it’s like… man, cure your internalize racism before you set ANYTHING… it’s simply outrageous
