You see those spirits that appear in the background whenever you use one of those orb-based supers? Well according to the "All About Vol 17" Capcom art book, each of those things has a name and a title, and they're exactly as over-the-top as you'd expect: Black - Giant God "Giameteus" Purple - Ten Thousand Poisons "Dogma" Blue - Ice Flower "Surfnir" Red - Flame Dragon "Goranda" Green - Wind Guardian "Lafarle" Yellow - Thunder Beast "Galbarus" This is why I love this era of Capcom, they put such a ridiculous amount of thought and effort into the aesthetics of their games.

Dragon's Dogma was, in fact, a sequel to Red Earth at conception. There's sick concept art of Leo, and his belt is still in the game. Dragon's Dogma's in-development concepts were nuts; it was a game of such impossible scale. Maybe one day, we'll get a Dragon's Dogma 2 that better realizes Itsuno's dreams.

Because those bosses probably weren't balanced for VS mode. Instead of looking at it as a single player fighting game it's more of a boss rush style game like Furi that controls like a fighting game.

I really like Red Earth. I wish it had caught on and evolved as a new spin-off genre. I'd love to design a game like it, including a more robust versus mode with toned down versions of all the boss characters. Sort of like how KoF '98 delivered with an excellent Omega Rugal boss but also included a balanced Rugal for players to enjoy using without feeling cheap.

More specifically, I want them to establish that Darkstalkers, Ghosts N’ Goblins and Red Earth all take place in the same universe, just different time periods. So DS is modern day, GnG is medieval times, and RE is ancient history. The story would be a time travel plot revolving around Firebrand using the Time Crest(from Demon’s Crest) to open a portal to the present to search for the other Crests. And then at end of the base game's story, another portal is opened to the distant past, and the game's DLC characters are from Red Earth. Darkstalkers only has, like, 18 characters, and Red Earth only 12. So DS4 could easily launch with every DS character, and you could have every RE character after just 2 DLC seasons.

Considering that asynchronous multiplayer games came to prominence as a concept later, if they had thought of it could Red Earth have been an asynchronous fighting game? Like if you choose the T-rex you get 5+ mooks that are killed in 1-3 hits to try and soften up the target before you go in as the T-rex itself. Allowing to balance out more limited boss characters against more well rounded hero characters.

I played a game back in n64, Flying Dragon, in which you would level up in a story mode with RPG elements and I loved it. Sad to see Capcom tried that and kinda failed

I feel like this game sorta spiritually lived on in Monster Hunter. Same sort of big bosses vs small human with a varied set of choices for their movesets. Even the Ancient Gunlance in Monster Hunter is the same as the weapon used by Blade which I think was a intentional throwback.

I think those are Mitsurugi and Taki sprites from Namco X Capcom, but it's not exactly a fighting game, but a strategy game. The Jin and Heihachi sprites from before are probably from the same game.

I wouldn't classify Red Earth as your traditional Fighting Game, this one is much closer to a specific boss-battle genre of arcade games that offered stuff like "Monster Maulers" and "Metamoqester". Quite an interesting genre but one that I think doesn't have many games based on.

So, if you wanna see some crazy bullshit monster battles in a Red Earth style "you vs. the boss" fighter, except with two player co-op, play Metamoquestar (I think I spelled that right) It's like Red Earth but more insane. You fight a house that turns into a demon and Frankenstein in that game.

Honestly the way I would go about Red Earth/Warzard would be port them over to Darkstalkers (probably have to reboot DS for the characters to work in the story) The Warzard story mode could be a game mode in the new DS set in the Makai world with boss characters still serving their roles as bosses. As for the main characters. Mai Ling could have some connections to Hsien-Ko/ Lei Lei and the same can be said for Kenji and Bishamon. As Tessa and Leo I have some ideas for how they could work in DS ( on the plus side Tessa a witch so she already fits in DS).

How do tournaments of the game work? Do you use just the Level 1 or the capped fighter?

I don't think there were a lot of tournaments for this, but I imagine if there were any at all they probably used capped fighters for more moves and more complexity. I've actually been thinking about having a kind of four-player tournament for this game that implements the PVE mode since that's the main focus of the game. It would go something like this: Every player gets one of the four characters randomly assigned at level 1. They get 10 credits to gather as much XP as possible. At any time the other three players can invade the game using one of their credits to try and kick a player off the cabinet. No continues are allowed. When a player is kicked off the cabinet they get a 10-15 minute cooldown in which they cannot use their credits. When all credits are depleted you do a round robin tournament with the character you've powered up. An important note on invading other player's games in this is that you get way more XP if you defeat a player character that is higher level than yours, so it might be worth waiting for other players to beef themselves up a bit if you're feeling confident. An alternate prize goes to whoever has the high score on the cabinet once the tournament is finished.
