Get More SIDE BEND in the Golf Swing for a Repeatable Primitive Action

We've all heard of side bend in the golf swing but as is the case with anything movement oriented, what use is side bend if you have no feeling for what it actually is? Otherwise it's just another golf term thrown around with little-to-no meaning. The golf swing is a primitive action and side bend is a part of the golf swing. Always fills me full of joy seeing peoples reactions! My biggest problem is (having seen Marcus a couple of years ago) not reverting back to bad habits. I’ll have a couple of weeks every now and then where I can’t hit a cows arse with a banjo. Then I decide ‘reset’ time, get to the range, and start from scratch. It’s always amazes me how relaxing and swinging what feels miles to the right does for my driving - results in a lovely baby draw! Same but to a lesser with the irons and bang that mat 😂

I love how almost all of the students look at the club face after their new swing - like they can't believe the new feeling. I want to experience that! So much that I am working on a trip across the pond - hopefully soon...

Having had the experience, the other effect is just laughing at how the ball has been hit (I say it that way because the effortless power makes it feel like you aren't doing that much) - it really is extraordinary. It's still a lot of work to embed the new habits and overcome the old nonsense, but my game is definitely improved and my handicap is at an all time low - all thanks to Sam (at Zen).

I have been working hard with my Zen lesson video + GRFi System, and I can honestly say it's the best golf I've ever played. I have more passion (always a golf nerd anyway!) for the game now, than I ever did. Love this stuff guy’s go from hitting slices to hitting pro like draws on command That’s something I need to work on side bend while focusing on that draw shape to the target I’ve got to much noise from what I think the swing should look like instead of just doing a task ie hitting a ball to a target with a stick

the last piece of the puzzle for me was side bend. What a huge difference. I tended to stand up the throw my right shoulder "over the top", but after the side bend piece, what a difference. So much easier to get the draw path started. Thanks Marcus!

Great stuff 👍🏼I’m taking my grf kit to the range on Monday evening to run through the system for my lad to have a crack at it... he’s off 10 but I’ve always thought he should be in low single figures. I’m hoping that I don’t ruin his, already, good game! I went to a friend who has a sim in his garage. I have hit a fade with driver for decades. I felt like I was exaggerating the path to the right so much I was swinging sideways but the numbers said 1-2 degrees in to out. It’s amazing how much you have to exaggerate to learn a new movement. The lessons last 3 hours so depending on the circumstances proximity to the student when firing balls through the hoop is appropriately applied! It's pretty impressive what happens to performance when the shift of attention is shifted externally. I do appreciate your concern, however 😂👍

Why do I find it so hard to fade the ball even when I think about swinging left? I have a neutral grip but for some reason the club face wants to close. What could the reasons be please?

At some point the club face will close so we don't want to restrict that release for a fade, try shifting your path much further left than what you perceive at this stage as being left!

The assumption is most issues are down to over coaching and too many swing thoughts. I, like very many, have had very few lessons (2 in my case), and still have many of these bad I swing issues. So, it's not all about "de-programming". You are teaching technique, but in a different way.

We're never "de-programming" as such, rather than allowing all we have learnt to re-organise itself. We can't just magically forget what we've learnt up until now. And lessons aren't at the epicentre of swing thoughts as everything we watch, read, listen and experiment with or without a coach shapes our perceptions. Often we just need a change of our environment to elicit greater certainty over the execution of all that we've learnt to date.
