@katiejon179 күн бұрын
I’m a wife and mother, and my husband has childhood trauma, CPTSD, depression, and likely a personality disorder (a therapist said this, then my husband never went back). I’ve been with him for 9 years. He really has put in work to improve and heal, and he is a wonderful father. But he is not a good husband, he puts in effort with every other person he comes across, but I’m who gets him without any effort. I’m sad to say that it is horrible. We got together when I was 36, and I never had chronic pain before. I’ve had chronic pain since about 18 months into our relationship, all in my pelvis and back. I’m just now, like in the past week, grasping that it is all emotional. When he’s loving and respectful towards me (or even just bland) I’m fine. When he gets stressed or feeling depressed.pm he takes it out on me... and my back starts to spasm, leading to days (sometimes weeks) of immense pain. I won’t leave him, because as I’ve said, he’s a great father. Our children are little and I know how divorce damages children. The good news is that I’ve learned how much my emotions and “perceived danger” are making my life worse with this pain - so I have something to move forward with now.

I appreciate your teachings very much. While I knew I’ve been in fight or flight mode much of my life, I had trouble changing it because I felt I was lying to myself in some way by not facing reality. Your wording has helped… especially the part about saying frightening things to ourselves. I thought “I wouldn’t do that to anyone I love, why am I doing it to myself” that hit home . I also wanted to mention I went on a very very low carb animal based diet 5 1/2 months ago and it greatly lessened my inflammation, and cured my restless leg syndrome, and many other things esp metabolic health. But I still was stuck with my depressive pain Full way of thinking and could not get out of home or entertain hanging with others. So I am working on this now, and it is much easier because I have only a few pains left . This hopefully will help others. Thanks ❤

I wish I saw this video back in 2017 when I was going to college. In the fall of 2017 I broke up with my girlfriend. I thought she gave me a disease and I prolonged going to a doctor for a a year and half. It ate me up night and day. The thought of having a disease set off my fight or flight response. I really am disappointed because I went and got checked two years later and I had nothing. But the damage was done. Believing that fear ruined my life. I can’t even get out of the parasympathetic mode. I have no drive, no appetite, I can eat and not get full, chronic pain, sleep is deeply disturbed, I can’t sleep for more than an hour without waking up. This has been going on since the fall of 2019. Only time it seemed to get better when I smoked weed for 4 months. My best advice for anyone that’s experiencing a constant fight or fight response. Stop it or you’ll wind up similar to me. It really sucks I don’t wish it on anyone. Thank you for the video. Any tips to help reverse this would be awesome :/ I’m so depressed

Hi, Dan, I'm a fairly new subscriber and I am getting so much value from your guidance. You mentioned breathing in this video...what are your thoughts on nose breathing vs mouth breathing and how each can engage either the para or sympathetic nervous system? I tend to wake up with very dry cotton mouth, and in researching this I found it is due to mouth breathing during sleep. Then I learned that mouth breathing engages the sympathetic nervous system, whereas nose breathing engages the parasympathetic. I tried to consciously nose breathe, and it felt really awkward, which tells me perhaps my constant mouth breathing has been contributing to my living in fight or flight for so long from past trauma. It's just been a few days of practicing nose breathing during the day and using mouth tape during sleep, and I'm feeling calmer already. I will also use the advice in this video to continue the soothing/stress balance I need. Thank you, Dan, for what you do.
@PainFreeYou2 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard much about mouth versus nose breathing as it relates to TMS. We cannot control our mouth breathing during sleep, so I wouldn't worry about it. During the day, you can influence your breathing slightly by noticing if your mouth is open or not. Which type of breathing makes you feel better/safer? Do that. Deciding you are doing it wrong and stressing about it likely adds more fear than just breathing in whatever way you do.

The other thing too is taking wise efforts to calm down the amygdala - there are many ways to do it and its not a mystery, its in our sphere of control and can apply techniques every time. Whereas for me the deeper emotional processing is tougher, less obvious, a bit of an unknown landscape. Not to say it isnt important to address MBS, but I agree that getting out of the "reactive" mode is the first and most fundamental thing if nothing else than to keep things from getting worse, or triggering even more issues (anxiety, depression) that can happen if we stay in the stress response too much/long.

For some reason, this one popped up on your FB page this morning and I really needed to hear this message TODAY. For the last few days I have awakened, not in physical pain, but in the crazy world of anxiety which for me is worse than physical pain. I come to my journal first thing and I try to get rid of it. Realizing that pushing it away with great fear wasn't helping, I tried to accept it and have an open house as you have suggested in the recent past. (I simply love that imagery, btw.) But this anxiety is a hard friend to accept. So... THIS! I realize once again that I am working too hard. Today I will try harder (LOL) to have fun. :)
@PainFreeYou4 жыл бұрын
It's interesting. Anxiety is not a problem to be solved. It's simply another feeling that, while uncomfortable, is not dangerous. If we simply stop resisting it and stop trying to get rid of it and allow ourselves to feel anxious - it will pass. Many people give themselves anxiety attacks trying to get rid of.... anxiety.

It’s really asinine to torturing yourself. Your fight or fight response scam be triggered by just a negative thought. I’ve done it plenty of times and I didn’t know anything about the parasympathetic or sympathetic system until it was too late. I was always in the sympathetic nervous system for the majority of my life. Now I’m just cruising in the parasympathetic mode which is not good tbh. It’s no fun not stressing about things that need attention. Like your hygiene, parents, your significant other. It can literally mess w h your entire body. Sex for example feels really good when your sympathetic nervous system is healthy. Trust me I don’t enjoy sex anymore and it’s because my bodies adrenaline is worn out :/ I really hope people watch the entirety of this video.

Yeah - this is what I need - I have been trying for weeks. It seems I am stuck and so my muscles are aching all over. I am trying to get re-frame my thoughts today. Accept the thoughts, let them go.
I get often into fight flight because of subconscious fear, I often don't notice the trigger until my symptoms flared so bad I can barely talk. (For years I didn't even know what triggered them, so I really didn't fear it, but my body did!) So I had to learn to calm my nervous system via the body, because thinking "I'm safe" didn't help at all, because I never consciously felt unsafe. I think many people can't recognize the roll of stress because they are not aware of it, because it all happens subconsciously and very fast. (For example getting symptoms from loud noise, heat, high heart rate)

Making a playlist to listen to while playing jazz etc... I have chronic migraines, and doing the TMS wiki program years ago helped amazingly. WHY am I so resistant to doing it again? Migraines have gotten much worse. Singing is REALLY helpful. Just a lullaby or an old traditional song is easy to try. Great advice. I wake up with anxiety every day, and the migraine follows immediately. The abortive meds aren't working much anymore. I also notice my tongue (although clean!) is grey/white when I get migraines. It's like I'm suffocating on anxiety. When I am energised and healthy - my tongue is pink and healthy. I am also very fit and active - exercise very much WHEN I have no migraines. Migraines are literally Killing me. Suicidal ideation comes with each one.

Is it possible for your subconscious to be in fight-or-flight but you don't realize it? I actually feel quite stress-free (consciously) and do a lot of meditation but I have very stressful dreams at times and often wake up in the middle of the night feeling very agitated and definitely in fight-or-flight mode. Any thoughts on how to deal with this?
@PainFreeYou4 жыл бұрын
My take is that fight or flight is the response in the body. It can be caused by real danger, perceived danger, thoughts or dreams. It sounds like you are doing a great job when awake of soothing yourself and calming your fears to keep you out of that stress response. Other than some proactive visualization as you lay down to bed about having a restful sleep combined with a practice of gratitude as you drift off, I don't really have any suggestions for stopping intense dreams. What I would suggest is that if you do wake up agitated and in the fight or flight mode, go right to soothing. Reassure yourself that it was just a dream, breathe deeply and bring yourself out of it as soon as possible. And most of all, it's not a big deal. Sure, it's not comfortable and not preferred, but it's not harmful. Try not to view this as a massive problem to solve. And certainly try not to go to sleep fearing that it will happen each night. I'm no expert on dreams, but these are the things I think may be helpful.

@@PainFreeYou I recently made the connection that rock climbing (among other things including life's daily responsibilities) has been putting my body in a TMS based stress response causing chronic pain. I can't stomach the thought of giving it up, but there are literally instances where i'm putting myself in positions that would end very poorly if i were to mess up. i try to reduce that risk as much as possible, but my subconscious is apparently very much aware of what's going on.

I have been married for 25 years and my husband was diagnosed with mental illness 5 years ago. He refuses to stay on his meds and becomes verbally and emotionally abusive as a result. I am in the process of getting out of the marriage but can't leave until I find an affordable place to go. I have pushed down my anger, pain, rage, hurt, sadness, depression etc., for years. It is simply unsafe for me to express any negative emotions. I know I am constantly in fight or flight but I don't know how to make myself feel safe. I am also having trouble feeling my emotions because I just feel kind of numb. I know I am sad and angry about things but I don't actually "feel" those emotions anymore or know how to release them. Any suggestions you might have would mean so much.

As long as my late mother was alive, even in a debilitated condition, I must have felt essentially safe because none of my TMS back pain or sciatica manifested as symptoms until about 3-months after her death in 2001. Until then I was always being a good over-achieving No. 1 son. But shortly after her death I blew off a contract that I didn't like very much and began a fanatical program of trail running. One night of course when I got back to my late mother's house (which I'd just inherited mind you), I was struck down with a major back attack that led to 6-months of physical therapy. Which of course worked for a while. But the next time I suffered a major emotional loss, bango the sciatica and LBP came back with a vengeance, triggered of course by you guessed it, a fall I took out trail running. Looking back you can sure detect the pattern!

I'm not sure I understand the question. Can you clarify please?
@Peacemakerblue4 жыл бұрын
Pain Free You I mean when I’m being myself in conversation I don’t get triggered as easily but when I’m being more analytical in conversation I get triggered and become inhibited. I assume it’s because when your thinking it’s a process so others people’s mannerisms can be distracting to that process and you can become confused. But being yourself no process is going on. So I wanted to know when you premeditate is the brain more susceptible to being triggered??? (Fight or flight response)
@PainFreeYou4 жыл бұрын
@@Peacemakerblue Of course, trying to think your way through a conversation means you aren't even paying attention to the conversation because you are so concerned with how you are being perceived. If you are in the present and just talking, there is no self judgment. If you analyze every word and the other persons reaction, you will obviously trigger stress. Make a decision to simply be who you are. Be in the moment. Deciding up front that you don't care about the outcome and that you will just be in the moment will be very freeing.
