@@smith8124 isn't that the idea of running groups though? Stick the fast experts together so they can all tare about without having to worry about having a pleg in the way. Stick all beginners or casual riders in a Novice group where no one is hitting the big doubles or massive jumps. That way everyone can go at their own pace whether that be 1st or 2nd gear plodding in a Novice group or 5th gear pinned clearing every jump in experts. The biggest idiots though are when either slow people go with the fast people and get in the way just so they can say they ride with the experts or when fast people ride with the beginners just so they can be the fastest. Its better to have people riding to their ability. Theres no point calling someone a pussy, pushing then beyond their limits, having them break their neck and then the local track closes down because people keep fucking themselves there... No one jumps on a mx bike thinking its safe. Its just weighing up whats the better idea. A) Going home after a fun days riding with the plan to go out again and improve your riding the following weekend. B) Sending it on the big ass jump knowing you can't land it, potentially breaking your spine or femur and never riding again all for a practice day.

2 years ago ... I was in a race, I got the holeshot but in the first jump I fell off the bike, everyone who came after me passed me and one of them hit me with the bike footrest on my head , leaving me unconscious for a few hours, a month after the championship started and we had to go to train, everything was perfect, but of course, I was afraid of falling and that something would happen ... in the last training heat I fell, and lasted 1 minute without being able to breathe, then I just got sleepy and fell asleep, when I woke up I was off the track and they told me that I was like dead, that I didn't breathe or had any signs of life, after that my dad was so scared about everything that happened... we decided that we were going to leave the races... 2 years later, today my father called me and said he was going to buy a 2019 kx100 so that I could race again and the emotion I felt at that time was... something inexplicable, something incredible... Well that was my story... nothing more to say

Good tips! I'd like to add another. Fear is mental when you just think about an obstacle, jump etc you tend to psych yourself out. I find that if I "Literally" talk to myself (if my helmet was wired you'd hear me talking) as I approach a section and through the jump, it gets me over the jump vs psyching myself out. When I say talking I mean giving myself directions as to hitting my marks as I approach and execute the jump. This builds my confidence and once I've done it a few times I no longer need to talk through it.

Get over the triple trees, elbows up, balls of feet on pegs, take a deep breath, grab a hand full and spout "freedom" as you sail over the entire section/obstacle! If things are clear off to one side or the other, just land there first, if you aren't confident in what's going on. Before long you'll KNOW that you can do it. You'll dream it, and then wake up ready to do it. The desire will override the fear and excitement will be there result. Also, keeping a slightly nose high attitude (front wheel, that is) will be better, if you come up a bit short. But the real fix is to just go faster! I always hear beginners letting off the gas, right before they hit a jump.. and i always see them riding too far back on the seat or feet too far forward on the pegs. All are the exact opposite of what should be happening.

The all day phyche out. Yep. You can wait all day, watch other riders just don't make run after run at it only to shut it down. Its also important to watch another rider on the same size bike jump it if you are having any doubts. Also a tow works good whether you follow strait over it behind or shut it down and watch the flight path of the rider in front then hit it next lap. Love the videos.

Great advice on the five attempts rule, Im 48 and got back into racing after a long hiatus and couldn't believe how steep the jumps now we're at the local pro-national style practice tracks. They require 3rd gear pinned on my 350sxf to clear which was intimidating at first but the best decision I made was not to relive past glory on my first few times back and build confidence. Also watching the fast guys when they blow by you on the obstacles you're trying to figure out is useful because you see in real-time the commitment needed to safely negotiate some of that big or technical stuff.

The biggest issue I see with trail riders or new riders working on jumps is they lean too far back and lock their arms straight as they go up the face (front end high). You want to remain neutral on the bike (helmet over the bars) all the way up the jump face and the bike will feel light in the air. Like Johnny says, lean into it. Not away. Helmet over the handlebars at all times is the best tip to give new riders, that's the neutral balance point of the bike whether you're turning or jumping. My trainer always called the bar pad 'the office'. Always stay in your office!! Nice vid Johnny!

I cased a stepup hard and broke my leg. I knew I didn't have the balls to commit but I tried it anyway. Stood on the throttle... got to the jump face got scared and let off the gas. Worst thing I could have done, I knew it was a huge mistake, but the fear made me do it anyway... guaranteeing I was going to land in the worst possible spot 3/4 of the way up the stepup. Broke my foot, smashed my head into the handlebars, but I twisted the throttle and managed to grunt it up to the top of the hill without dropping it.

What about throttle control at the launch point and controlling the bike in the air with the rear brake and throttle?
