@@thegraytergood right now I just try to protect them the best i can! I wear nail polish all week but keep it off during the weekends, I use cuticle oil every night, and I gently file them when needed. I also started taking collagen vitamins !

Reminder for my DIY ladies if you use a salon grade cuticle remover (from Sally’s, Walmart etc) make sure to wash your hands with soap and water and not leave any residue on the nails, as the chemicals will continue to damage your skin and nails. Read the packaging! 😊

@catchanh I have one crooked nail on each hand. I find it easier to shape them with nail polish still on (wear a mask) that way you can see the overall shape and not just go by the direction your nail grows.

Hi! I have a few questions that I just wanted to clear up. I’ve seen all ur shorts and I think you’re amazing at what you do! So I’d appreciate it if you could answer these questions for me, Ty! I’ve heard that acetone can leave your nails really dry and it’s best to use a non-acetone polish remover, is this true? You said that you use acetone in the nail prep stage, and I was wondering if that was useful/healthy for nails. Also, I wanted to know how long to wait to do nail art after applying a polish. I like to add a top coat on and then wait about an hour and 15 minutes to start doing nail art. Lastly, this question doesn’t have much to do with actual painting, but more of the overall health of the nail. I never used nail polish throughout my life, until I went to an event a few months ago (around October) in which I went to a salon and got my nails done. My nails were very healthy then, they grew strong and didn’t have any ridges (that I know of). However, I used to cut them very short (suggested by my parents lol) and I didn’t properly treat or file them. After getting my nails painted for the first time, I started to get into the world of nail art and just overall nail care and designs. However, my nails are now visibly getting worse and worse. They aren’t as strong as they were before, and my pointer finger on my right hand’s nail just won’t grow, and whenever it does, it breaks. My nails have started getting more yellow and I see a lot of white dots on them, which after doing some research is called leukonychia. I also have a bit of vertical ridges that don’t bother me too much, but just seem a little concerning. Throughout the past few weeks I’ve also noticed a lot of peeling in my nails, even though they haven’t been scratched on any surface and I try my best to not use them as a tool or to have them hurt in any way. Do you know about any products that could be helpful? Right now I have cuticle oil, I push back my cuticles after every manicure, put lotion on my hands almost every day, file them whenever I’m doing a new manicure, and like I mentioned before, I don’t really scratch them along any surfaces at all. Also you might wanna note that I am not a nail biter lol. Thanks so much again! And if anyone knows any answers I would appreciate it!

Acetone can dry out your nails, however I personally find that acetone nail polish remover works better than non acetone nail polish remover. Before using nail polish remover I’ll put cuticle oil around and underneath my nails which helps them dry out less. Before you paint your nails, it’s important for them to be as dry as possible to help the polish stick to them, any excess oils can cause the polish to lift or chip. You want your nails to be hydrated while you’re wearing polish, and dry when you take it off, unless you’re keeping your nails naked for an extended period of time. I don’t wait super long to start nail art, usually just a couple minutes after I’ve applied the first coat of polish. For nail breakage, I recommend using a nail strengthener every so often underneath your manicures. Also yellow nails are just a result of staining from constantly wearing nail polish, it’s not something to be concerned about

Pro tip, you should file and shape your nails before soaking them. The nail expand after exposed to water and make them weak. You could cause a break on the nail. ❤

Hydration always! I try to never let them get dry and crusty. I also do the liquid remover around once a week or so, and if I have hangnails I’ll clip them immediately.

here are some things that have really helped me 🥹 I used to have nail nubs but doing these things constantly have changed my life:) - Use a gentle file, 180 grit or higher or a glass file, don’t clip or use a cheap abrasive file that shreds your nails - Gloves every single time you’re doing dishes or cleaning, water is so so bad for your nails - Don’t use your nails as tools! Use a spoon to open cans, don’t rip open packages with your nails, etc etc. - Always wear polish or gel, bc it’s like armor for your nails - Round nail shape, square shape tends to break on corners because it’s a stress point (especially with bare nails) - Put on cuticle oil + lotion at night before bed, more cuticle oil during the day if you can - Talk to your doctor and see if you have a vitamin/mineral deficiency, that could be affecting the health of your hair/skin/nails
