Thank you Amelia for posting a video where everything doesn't go as smoothly as is wished! Every professional riders are posting videos of perfect demos but the reality is that for us common riders, working on our own most of the time, things aren't that easy. Apart from mistakes that we riders do, our horses can get tense or spooky or tired and that makes the ride more difficult. It is interesting to see HOW YOU react in such cases, HOW you feel about it and how you integrate these as normal phases in the learning process. Thank you again and congratulations for having the courage to post a video where everything is not perfect: most professionals would never do that but I feel this is REALLY important to see how to deal with a horse that is learning. I see parallels in the character to my horse (he’s still learning) and as I’m still learning too I find it difficult on how to react correct and calm when he for instances runs over me or start being rude. It would be amazing if you would document the journey with this one 😍

Nice video Amelia. Looks like you are leg yielding a few steps over as prep just prior to applying the simple change aids for the next canter lead. I have found the shoulder fore and the half halts with the outside rein have significantly improved my walk-canter-walk transitions.

I can't wait to try these. We're focusing on groundwork for several reasons at the moment. But I have been working on all the transitions with him: walk-trot-walk, trot-canter-trot,walk-canter-walk, and all the halts too lol. He has 2 canters, a huge strung out one, and his nice and controlled one and a half trot half canter that makes me roll my eyes lol

It is very helpful to me to see that you are accepting some trot steps in between the cancer to walk in the walk to canter. I have been insisting my mare not trot, probably getting a little bit too hung up on that rather than accepting a a couple of trot steps. Insisting on no trot is probably making her tense.

It's important to develop the confidence and strength, it's hard work for them to do w-c transitions. As they move up in strength you do have to get pickier

This is a NICE horse glad you are taking the time. I struggle with a shorter connection on 1 of my horses he resents it and gets short strides and stiff. And bending is really hard for him so it will be quite a while before I can do these!

@@AmeliaNewcombDressage Yes, absolutely. We are only working in the circle at present; he's not ready to try the walk transition on the long side yet. He really needs the circle for keeping the bend. We've been working on contact; submission, and supppleness all last month- in all gaits, plus staying round and deep in the w/t & h/t & t/c transitions. When I tried the w/c transitions last week, it was the first time he could do them. I was over the moon. Jump is the key!

I have her since mid April, and slowly she’s building the muscle in the right places to make a nice top-line, although we still have a long ways to go. I am holding off on changes but soon will be ready to consistently do the exercises in this video. Thank you again so much!

Great video! I have a lot more practice to do. My horse gets hot and tense if I do more than a few walk/canter transitions. He curls under and starts to anticipate. What can I do to help him be more settled with this exercise?

A little bit of lateral work might help, also throw in the trot transition at times before he gets tense. Try to prevent the tension is easier than trying to defuse it.

We are at the same place with training and getting ready to teach flying changes. I doing the walk on the straight line now but the downwards transition isn't consistent he wants to trot for a step or two. Am I not using enough leg? He may not be strong enough yet if he feels like he needs to do trot steps. Build his strength and connection off your seat by doing transitions within the gaits (ie lengthens). Hope that helps!

I am currently at the stage where our walk canters are good but our canter walks are not always good, with him running through at times. If I practice on the circle, he gets them quickly but when I incorporate them into say riding a test with other movements, I don't always get them nice and crisp.

My guy takes a quick trot step and changes. I have a hard time keeping him up in the front and more under with his hind end. He has the walk canter back to walk and change leads between each walk. Any help you can suggest would appreciate.
