What I appreciated most about this is the very timely reward immediately following your horse's flying change, then nicely (kind explanation manner) bringing back a relaxed canter followed by second reward of a relaxed walk. Reward timing while in motion is so very important and often forgotten or omitted. I would love to see the progress of changes on this horse. Thanks again, Amelia.

I came here as a western rider because the way the western riders explain it confused me so much and I’ve learned over the years that it’s easier just to watch the videos with the english riders LOL. Thank you for showing this on a horse who is actually learning them!

This wonderful! I have a 19 year old Hannovarien whom I’ve owned for less than two years . I not positive if he has confirmed changes. The previous owner/trainer purchased him as a project horse and owned him less than a year before I acquired him. His history stops at second level shown in 2010 usdf lifetime,but his original owner passed away and horse was in a field for serval years . Previous owner/trainer got him at auction was able to conditioned up to Second level again put some in hand passage/piaffe . Lateral work , half pass. But never worked on any changes. This video is key for me as I am learning upper level movements myself ! Going up to third level is huge for both of us. Thank you for this video

Canter walk canter, left flexion for left lead. Right flexion for right lead.

Thank you for sharing this valuable video. What is so successful on all levels of this tutorial is the honest relationship between horse and rider so beautifully explained and demonstrated. You explain so well what you are doing and why you are doing it with respect for the horses weaknesses, temperament, and reactions to new tasks. Plus constructive detailed homework to keep a rider in check on applying correct aids while on the surpentine. Methodical, repetitive correct and kind training with compassion. Hi Amelia! Your videos are always so helpful, thank you.🐴🦋 I’m teaching my horse flying lead change and one direction she changes willingly and beautifully! But the other direction she is a different horse and gets mad, bucks intensely, sticks her head in the air and her rhythm gets choppy. She will get the change going the difficult way but not without throwing a fit and bucking. I can confidently ride through this but it’s unpleasant and dangerous. I have friendly hands, don’t dig my heels in and my mindset is positive and supportive, I always reward and release pressure after she gets a lead change. Someone suggested I use a whip on her the second she bucks but I don’t want to punish her because she does get the change, it’s just wild and stressful looking but she’s trying. Any suggestions to help her smooth this side out mentally and physically?

Hi Amelia. I always follow your videos and trying my learnings out in my practice. You said you need to work more with your horse about bracing in the transitions (in simple change as well) but what are your tips for improvement? My horse braces even more and I feel scared if he puts his head up too much. I feel like my seat is also causing him to brace as my transition is not subtle…

This was a fantastic exercise. My boy learned to do sort of trot stride behind whilst changing at the front. It was difficult for me to feel it as it was so smooth and quick. It was only when my coach filmed it I could see what he was doing. We’ve been trying many, many exercises for months & months to try to fix it, including multiple simple changes (which he does well) but nothing has really worked until this. We managed to do 2 calm correct changes to the left today! Hurrah!!!! So happy! For my fella it was the change of bend before the walk transition that really seemed to connect with him. Thank you! Very grateful. 😁

i notice hes behind vertical especially at stretch? my morgan wants to stretch like that too but chirorproactor and trainer say bad for SI joint? could you clarify that?

Hey Tori! They'll eventually look for the proper stretch with practice. TRy it on the ground too to encourage it without a rider.

Super interesting video as I'm exactly at that point right now. My issue is that if I collect to the point you are, he ends up wanting to get *behind* the bit (single or double). So I then try push forward a bit and then he come above the bit during the walk transition. As with the horse in this video (and your other video on dealing with horses cantering on wrong lead), he will then tend to get on the wrong lead on the right, as left is his easier canter. So, I get "stuck" into wrong lead above the bit. :( Should I instead try to keep him rather a bit too slow as that makes it easier as in this case behind the bit is better than above?

Good question! Yeah I would probably keep him a bit lower and deeper so that you have better control. Then once he understands bring him up again,. Good luck!

I may have to spend some time really getting to keep him in a slow collected canter without falling out and then work from there. He may even find it harder until I build up yet a bit more muscle. Oh, he ain't gonna be happy. He's a good boy but can be a bit lazy. :)

I’m not sure if you will read this, but I’m starting changes with my young horse. His simple changes are pretty good, but he just stays in counter canter when I ask him to change...any ideas to help him jump over to the other lead?

Hi! You may have to come a little sharper and quicker with your let or whip so he jumps to the change. Just be ready because the first couple changes can get pretty exciting! Good luck!

My horse does that. It used to be worse, but as they get stronger, they figure it out. Just bring them down to a trot and try again.
