An aspiring KZbinr shows a disturbing video to her high school class.
GET READY WITH ME is used with permission from Jonatan Etzler. Learn more at etzler.se.
Aspiring KZbinr Vendela posts a video for a class presentation, but its dark message, combined with its cheerily mordant tone, disturbs her teacher Lukas. He begins to fear for her mental health and even her life, fearing she will harm herself -- or worse, commit suicide.
He tries to intervene, but his actions set off an unpredictable game of cat-and-mouse between teacher and student. With each move in this evolving game of power, the dynamic between the pair escalates to strange, unexpected places -- especially as it's increasingly played out on social media, with calamitous results.
Director Jonatan Etzler -- along with writers Amanda Hogbert and Axel Nygren -- has fashioned a taut, compelling thriller that scrutinizes the ravenous hunger for attention and distinction, particularly as it intersects with the mores of social media fame, the impact on mental health and the manipulation capable with video and public narratives. It seems to begin as a straightforward narrative about bullying and a feel-good intervention by a caring adult on behalf of a passive victim. But as it proceeds, it twists like a Mobius strip onto itself, revealing a dark yet riveting underbelly.
Chilling and incisive, this is a dark, psychologically disturbing narrative, rendered in a darkly muted, shadowy color palette and coolly clinical and disciplined camerawork, both of which suit the subject matter and the somber Swedish setting.
But the foundation is an excellent storyline and script, which is adroitly constructed and well-paced in its writing and editing. Possessing superb character insight, as well as an acute eye for how the arena of social attention shapes action and behavior, the narrative is alive to how teenagers jockey for status through their social media, how easily posts, videos and "content" can be weaponized -- and how easily perceptions can be manipulated to shift and mold the sympathies of the viewer.
The film's own storytelling exhibits a tight control over the release of information and insight, playing with our own understanding of what's going on and why. This masterful shifting is aided and abetted by two superb lead performances. Actor Shanti Roney plays the teacher with both great compassion and sensitivity, but the revelation is young performer Miriam Benthe as Vendela, who manages the difficult trick of offering insight, nuance and moments of both surprising vulnerability and callous amorality with subtlety and skill. She takes what could easily be a nasty, unsubtle role and parlays it into something much more complex and compelling.
A winner at the 2018 Student Academy Awards, GET READY WITH ME is an immaculately crafted work of cinema, made with precision and discernment. It's also a deft, keenly intelligent thriller, whose storytelling prowess is enough to keep viewers pulled along through unpredictable waters and whose arc has unusual depth and movement for a short.
But its real strength lies in its ability to provoke thought and discussion. It asks age-old questions of how far people will go to fit in, but its responsiveness to the current cultural moment may cause us all to question just what kind of world we are creating with each post, like and comment. The film is too smart and perceptive to offer answers, but instead lets its questions sit uneasily in both memory and conscience, letting them gnaw at the margins of awareness.

You can be. Just be there for a friend when they have a hard time. I used to harm myself too and I wish I had someone who listened and treated me like a human being. A little goes a long way and even if it's calling once and a while to see how someone is doing or sitting with them at lunch and talking to them about their day or holding their books as they walk to class or helping them at work. You don't have to be their best friend to be there for them. Just treat them good because they may not know what it feels like.

People who act depressed and suicidal for fame or attention are horrible people, depression is an extremely serious thing.
@overlorddoge1952
@overlorddoge1952 4 жыл бұрын
But, how can you tell? Some people with depression are "begging for attention". For example, Etika. People thought he was doing it for fame and attention, but then, they realized if anything, they helped him be lowered into his grave. My point is, I get what you are coming from, but this mindset is what causes people to not support people with depression.
@scxlez
@scxlez 4 жыл бұрын
@@overlorddoge1952 That is another problem. There are people actually out there who are depressed and do need support. And others don't take them seriously because it's such a big thing to pretend you're depressed to make others feel bad for you. I've had a friend who did that, but I also have friends who are seriously depressed. Just because someone where's a smile in public and has a lot of friends doesn't necessarily mean they're happy. They need to be taken more seriously, but it's hard to do with ignorant and self prioritized people acting like they're going through something serious.

I remembered when it moved into a new school in Sweden. I had a really nice teacher. Well she was almost too nice. And the students in the class take advantage of that and bullied her a lot. Everyone thought it was fine and just a joke until she quit the job and left the school. Apparently this has also happened to an older teacher before i came. They found her Facebook account and shared it to the class and everyone made fun of her pics. Like how she looked always angry, her red hair, her military pictures and how ugly she looked. All of this was in 5th-6th grade. I feel really bad but I couldn’t speak up. Cause i was always labeled as the quiet and weird kid. People made fun of my everything. Both boys and girls made fun of me and my friends for being... i guess different. They made fun of us for being Asian and mocked the Chinese language. And the teachers just told me that let them be and “that’s just how they are”. I finally broke down and told my I wanted to move school. And i did. I’m now just in 7th grade and things are a little better. I don’t have friends but at least people are nicer. Sorry if this was out of contexts but i felt like i wanted to speak out about this.

@Anonymous Gamer I'm 23. The advice I'll give you is to always be confident of yourself, try to find good people in your class. It's normal that at your age they are selfish and maybe arrogant, but do not dismiss the opportunity to meet them better, especially when you're working in teams. My other advice is to take an online teenager's course of something you like (e.g. music, painting, etc) you can meet other people.

As an Indian I couldn't fully relate to this because: 1.students aren't allowed to use phones in class. 2. Teachers would have immediately stopped the video and reported it to the principal. 3.severe punishment and EXPULSION would have been given to the bullies. 4. Students NEVER talk back to the teachers and if they do they will be immediately suspended or thrown out of the school. Nonetheless I did like this film as it shows what depression and suicide is like and how it shouldn't be taken as a joke.

The internet has turned people into demons. And hardly any parents are equipped to handle anything remotely related to suicide, depression, etc. And the people who truly need help, rarely get help. I am a teacher. I can confirm that teen students can be nasty to their teachers, I've gone home and cried several times. Some teenagers are spoilt brats and have no values. Vendela's mother shouldn't have given her a new phone. However, the teacher in this film should never have gone to her house to save her - that job is for the police. He should have known this girl had no boundaries when he started defending her and she filmed him and made fun of him online. That was a warning sign which the teacher ignored.

Less so boundaries, it's more that she is the bully is what he should've learned--a proven ego-and-clout-driven trickster. HE was the one with no boundaries, as he did anything he could to save her--crossing his boundary where it becomes the polices job societally, like you said. He basically cared too much, where he should've learned when she tricked him the first time. He crossed his own non-existant boundary, where most ppl would've had one, having learnt from the initial rude play she enacted. I'm sorry for your experiences. This is why i could never be a teacher; i get hurt enough in normal life, let alone being around immaturity all day😅 Praises to you for doing it tho. @Evan Koch uhhh, no. The paramedics took him away because he sliced his own wrist on the glass when he broke in to help her. He definitely went to the hospital, and was looking pretty bad from his blood loss when he was sitting on the couch. She ended up doing to him exactly what she was saying she would do to herself, just by accident. I think the extra blood on the tree at the end was to signify how much he had lost, and if so he probably died given how red the snow around it was.

It’s sad to see a man’s kindness used against him like that. He saw himself in her and wanted to help because he didn’t have anyone there to help him. Everyone should be as kind as him if they know someone that wants to take their life. I don’t think she was faking it. I think she really was depressed, but not suicidal. She saw a weakness in Lukas’ heart and used it to make her life better. I doubt it made her any happier with herself, but we won’t know because the story ends there.

I suffered with severe mental illness for the short time I managed to go to high school and not a single teacher spoke up- not when they saw me starving myself to loose 1/3 of my body, not when they watched me sleep through class after class because of the starvation they knew about, not when they saw me in the deepest of distress, not one spoke up. I’m only here today because I spoke up, and I frequently wish I didn’t because it was too late for me to ever have a ‘normal’ life by the time I was hospitalised. I wish I had had a Lukas. I teach middle school. Unfortunately, this felt very real in a sense. Making fun of teachers is 'cool' to some students. No matter the consequences. I've had days like that, where you feel like you can't win or get through to a student, despite the effort. I once taught in a school that had zero respect for elders or authority. And admin did nothing to remedy it. There, I once had an entire class laugh at me because I was getting onto them about cleaning up their messes. They said I looked funny when I was frustrated. I felt defeated and I quit teaching them that day. I usually don't let children's jabs impact me. But that day, I gave up. It wasn't until I moved to a better district that my love for teaching was reignited. But, the point is, yes, there are students/classes/schools like this. And that's why teaching has become the punchline of many jokes.

amahler03 Stay strong and remember how important the work you do is. The reward comes years later when a grown student recognizes you in a store, stops you and asks for a hug and tells you how you impacted them in ways they only realized with time. With teachers, maybe it comes at graduation time. 🍎🌷💙 (I wasn't a teacher, but a therapist for kids in a clinical school setting...and middle schoolers really are the most difficult: trying on new identities, testing boundaries, and desperate for peer approval)

That's a badge I'll wear with pride, so thank you ☺️. My goodness, this is a bitter crowd--I hope it was just the sour taste left in our mouths after this video. Something all wise teachers know is that you may very well never see the seeds you plant bloom...you just have to trust you did the best you could and allow time and experience to do the rest. Teachers who go into the profession expecting to see immediate results are always unfulfilled and often turn resentful--it's not about us. It's about the kids.

Sadly, in today's world teaching is a very thankless job. And i 100% blame the parents. why? because when i was a kid and if a teacher would scold me because i did something wrong and i complain to my mother that i got scolded in school today, she would first ask me what did you do wrong? And today, god forbid if i scold a student, the next day their parents will come down to the school demanding how dare i scold their kid. Please, stop making your kids so so entitled. a little bit of respect for elders will not kill them. a lesson or two on manners and discipline will not destroy them. please parents, do not spoil your kids to the point of no return. In a PTM, many many parents laughingly tell me "ma'm my kid doesn't listen to me. actually he is bit pampered and a bit moody. my kid listenes to you. I may have given birth to him but its you teachers who are raising them." no, no offend, but no. Raise your own damn kid. its your responsibility.

Alot of people are misreading her character. She wasn't faking in the beginning, although she was using it for attention. The cuts on her thighs were real and hidden, her mom actually smashed her phone, she genuinely sought out the teacher at first for help. When she started filming him, she saw an out. She saw a way to make everyone quit hating her so she turned on him. Her pain was real but she masked it with an act. People are calling her a sociopath like it's a reason to hate the character, but sociopathy is a real mental illness and is often difficult to understand or empathize with. She used his mental illness to up her social status, because she is sick. She isn't a normal person just being cruel for the sake of it like the bully in the beginning. She has real depression and other problems that she took out on that poor teacher. He did not deserve what happened to him and what she did was wrong but people will do desperate things at their lowest, especially developing teenagers. Everyone is saying she's the reason mentally ill people aren't taken seriously but in reality they are the reason people like her don't get real treatment.

KZbin viewers are pretty good at keeping content creators in check when they cross a major line, and she crossed several that even other teenagers would be appalled by. Granted, this is a film, and was meant to be extreme, but it did do a good job of addressing two things: the effects of bullying on adolescents, and the overwhelming desire of young people to be accepted, even at the cost of their own health, morals, and sense of humanity.

In summary: bullied girl takes advantage of her teacher that's trying to help her by filming him without context and uploading it on KZbin so she gets popular and stops getting bullied. The teacher despite that still tries to help her by showing her mother a video tutorial of her daughter teaching people how to cut themselves. The mother loses control and breaks her phone, then realizes what she had done. The teacher immediately feels bad as he watches Vendela lock herself in her room with her mother crying at the other side. The teacher sees Vendela trying to commit suicide at a school play and chases after her. But she has already left. He calls her from home and she says she's going to kill herself. The teacher rushes to her home and dials 911 on the way. He gets to her home and breaks the door down and accidentally stabbing his arm trough the glass. He sees Vendela in the bathroom tub with her wrists split open and carries her to the sofa. He tries to stop the bleeding by grabbing a towel from the bathroom. He goes back and sees that she is gone and notices that his wrist is bleeding due to the glass he shattered. He realizes that he has fallen into another trap. Vendela set it all up as a "prank". He sits on the sofa as paramedics arrive and carry him away while she's filming. She uploads her video with slight hessetation and goes to bed later. Going to school next day she has become increasingly popular with her classmates, but there's one thing missing. Her old teacher didn't come to school. As her substitute teacher calls her to show her film she smiles and agrees. (MY THEORY) The tree that was shown bleeding before is a symbol the old teacher hung himself at the end.

I really enjoyed this film actually, although like everybody else, I despised the girls actions. However I think this is a statement on the glorification of mental illness online, and also how people use sensitive topics for fame... this girl was dragged into the pit of desperation. And a genuine, kind hearted man had to pay for it. A very powerful film.

Sadly, it’s not just urban areas. It’s many... society treats teachers badly (especially in the US) and we are often the punchline of jokes. Treat us like a joke when you’re an adult, what behavior will your child model? I’ve been teaching a long time, in areas teachers were respected and some where they are not. You can feel the difference in the room... that’s why most quit after 5 years, we go to school longer than most people who make more money to enrich kids lives. But if the kids don’t even care, then how can we justify staying? I still teach, I love what I do, but my heart hurts for this portrayal because it’s too real.

@@kaylynne3748 that's just too heartbreaking..I don't understand why it is so in the US,I really dont..and I wish it weren't like that. It was really hard for me to believe that teachers are being treated like this,it's practically bullying!! Where I come from,I can say that as a student, teachers are given respect(bullying of this sort is totally out of the question),though society doesn't really regard the profession very highly. This video really angered my core..it's just too wrong. I hope you find the right places to teach, and it's a fact that as hard as it is to find a good teacher,it's VERY hard to find a good student. I wish that you keep loving your work, because believe me when I say, for the sake of learning and for all things good,we need good teachers in this world.

@@blehbleh-bleh2840 In South Asia, students won't get the chance to make fun of their teachers bc the teachers can freely beat up kids and many parents specifically instruct teachers to beat their kids when they misbehave. American Middle Schools are the most horrible place to be in. But at least in High School advanced classes, the students are nice. I am a High School Senior and I heard some stories about how one of the chillest teacher turned into the strictest one in one of the Freshman class during my Sophmore year. It's so sad how kids in many countries get the luxury, that all South Asians students want, of never getting beat up by their teachers, yet they don't appreciate it. Kids each year are getting worse as they are getting more and more freedom and leeway.
