as a young individual who works in a start up, PLEASE TAKE THE WEEKENDS OFF, PLEASE ASK FOR APPRAISALS, DRAW BOUNDARIES.The start ups can really burn you out and you don't want to be in that place. Both of em also are lucky to find each other, but that can't happen with everyone. Put in the hours for WHAT YOU WANT TO DO and not at the expense of your mental and physical health.

Plus this hustle culture only rewards individual who forgo their family life, kids, hobbies etc. It can get extremely toxic quite quickly. At the end of the day work is just one aspect of your life and you shouldn’t realise it after you have burnt out. Good companies understand that burning out your employees is a complete no no

I agree. I feel like they have generalised their opinion based on a few companies. But I must say there are sooo many great established companies out there wherein you don't have a login time, work culture is amazing plus you get a sat sun off. And the pay is great so why not. Mostly these are Product Companies or established startups.

Promoting, vocalising and generalizing work for free in the name of gaining exposure encourages a hostile culture that gives Indian economy more reasons to fail than others. Your maid needs to be paid, your labourers need to be paid, your recruits (as well as interns) need to be compensated fairly for their work. Your recruits have spent a fortune on educating themselves, their education and talent merits justified pay and anyone asking for yearly appraisals deserves so since it's a mark to prove that they are valuable. Every brand deal fetches a minimum of 2 lakh INR or more for influencers like you. If you can showcase a luxury lifestyle where your morning coffee starts with a Starbucks expresso, or where you claim you deserve your luxury, then your employees deserve the pay, the yearly raise in return for their efforts in managing YOU and contributing to YOUR success. Work Experience isn't something that can replace pay. Work experience doesn't feed a family. Work experience is a PERK of the job, NOT the pay for the job. Calling yourself a startup, and saying there's a cash crunch so expect NO PAY/appraisal/overtime pay/weekend offs is ridiculous and down right wrong. It's humiliating to your employees talent.

No offense but taking weekends off and working within your time range(let's say 9-5) should not be looked down on or considered bad because that's what we are appointed for,working within same time range and still excelling is extra ordinary..not working beyond hours and extra on weekends. If people keep working and not take day offs and rest that promotes such a bad work culture n environment everybody will be in a rat race compromising their health both physical n mental. And getting paid for the efforts is no bad,with the rising inflation there is no point of not wanting an yearly appraisal.lets be honest we all have to pay our bills and get our bread n butter.experience and learnings do matter but so does paycheck and appraisals.

So Veronica...."It seems like you're not aware of several conversations happening around work-life balance across the globe. There are debates and discussions about reducing the working days to 4 instead of 5. The "Extraordinary Life" you mentioned is being created for you and your co-founder, not the interns/employees working for you. For them this is just a job. Eventually, you two are going to reap the benefits and you are going to be owners of an amazing brand (if MASIC becomes one). Get the difference clear between an employer and an employee. You cannot expect everyone else to work with the same passion as the two of you.

Labour is not free and should not be treated as such. We work to put food on our plate and that is the gist of our economic system. The no-pay work culture in the name of “learning” feeds class division, favouring the privileged (the ones who can afford to work without pay), pressuring others into financial sacrifices, and excluding others from opportunities altogether.

Hi Kyra! While I respect and understand your opinion, I was simply trying to explain what worked for me and got me here. Especially when I came from a background of not a lot of money and privilege myself. I was desperate to not be stuck in a life that was a 9-5 rut, and be someone who eventually hated my job. I knew I belonged in the creative field and when I started off, I had no experience. But I got several opportunities in the beginning to my career with immensely successful companies and individuals solely by offering to work for free or at an amount that was acceptable for them because at that time, it was more important for me to prove myself to be a valuable addition to them and shadow them. Once they saw my work and skill set, my pay was never a problem. Again, it's optional to do this, not everyone can afford to do it and in some people's eyes it may not be an acceptable option, but it really did work for me and in any of these settings of working for free, I didn't feel exploited or overworked either.
@kyradcunha6678
@kyradcunha6678 2 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on making your mark in the creative field! All that you’ve said is true and that is the problem. Especially as someone coming from humble beginnings and having invested in an education, you shouldn’t have to offer free work to a corporate enterprise that benefits from your unpaid labour enabling them to escape taxation - thereby, keep money out of the pool for public services. The question we need to ask ourselves is this - does our potential have its own standing or is it only the package of potential along with unpaid labour translate into real job opportunities?

Hello! I think in those situations you must absolutely be honest and communicate that you need a minimum amount to live and would require that but offer to put in the hours and just show up and shadow someone along with that. There's no hard and fast rule to this! Offering to work for free was also the quickest way for me to convince someone to take me on board and eventually get on to a paid structure but you can do this either way. The overall message was to look and create opportunities for yourself where you can shadow someone that you respect and successful in your eyes, and literally LEARN from them. Whatever allows you to be a part of such moments, do it!

Okay I am all for the drive to build a wonderful life and working hard, but isn't saying 'don't draw boundaries' promoting hustle culture. It's quite evident how hustle culture has been impacting people's mental health in a very negative fashion. Working hard is important but compromising one's mental health by not taking breaks, by putting in way too many extra hours, by getting underpaid, is not the right way to go in my opinion. And Veronica is lucky enough to find a person like Malvika, but a lot of times employers do exploit you by making you work for extra hours, not paying you right and that is wrong on many levels.

As an owner you can put as much time into your startup as you want. You can have no work life balance, no social life, and pour everything you have into the business. If and when the business succeeds, you will reap the benefits. However, for an employee, if the amount of money that they get is not gonna increase like it is gonna increase for you, you cannot expect the same from them. Let’s say that after an ‘x’ amount of years your company is really successful and your profits are 100 times more then what they were when you started, the owner gets to keep the money and potentially increase there salary by a 100 fold. Will you be increasing the pay for the employees that stuck with you to 100 times then what it was before? I am guessing the answer is no. Hence, no one owes you anything more then what they have committed to prior, and what you pay them.

It just means that you’re a workaholic(if you enjoy it) and don’t understand the necessity of work-life balance. Most European companies have the culture of giving weekends off which has been seen to improve the productivity of the employees. It’s in India where we look at people who want a work-life balance as losers and people who overwork as the ideal kind. You just burn out or end up with no ‘life’ at all! Veronica, please don't spoil the credibility of startups by promoting exploitation at work. In fact, startups may sometimes even pay more than well-established brands to retain the talent that they've recruited. What you are promoting in the name of hustle culture is a toxic work culture that creates class division and only favours the privileged. There's nothing wrong with being paid fair and square for your work, your effort, your time, and your commitment. THere is nothing wrong with taking the weekends off to reap the benefits of the toil and time you put in for the previous 5 working days. And lastly, sad but true - yours is not the No. 1 brand worldwide in any consumer category or sub-category where people would be willing to work for free just to be able to pen down the brand name in their CV.

You can still LEARN so many skills, get great EXPOSURE, be EXTRAORDINARY even after working 9-5. You just need to manage your TIME BETTER. All the top organisations are great because they have STRONG VALUES and they understand WORK-LIFE BALANCE of their employees. Nobody in the The US, The UK, Australia work after their shift ends, not even 5 minutes, let alone weekends and they all are successful and gain so much exposure. The point is you should have worked as a full time employee in a corporate to understand this. And yes, if you want to put extraordinary efforts then do so for your own company because your employer is only paying you for 9-5. If you want people to invest extra hours, you need to pay them extra. There is nothing called as FREE LUNCH. When we need money to buy even a small needle, then why should one work for free? guys please think about what you are preaching to the young impressionable girls who are watching your videos religiously. this crap of working without expecting an appraisal only work if you are stupid, not valuing your work and a daddy's or mommy's princess. if you have rents go pay, remember there is a hike in rent every 11 to 12 months and not to forget inflation. you can't seriously expect someone to work for free and parasite off of their parents or whomeo ever. what is the point of working and being "independent" if you can't fend for yourself. this is especially disappointing since Malvika has been very vocal about her circumstances and how she had to hustle to pay the rents. please be aware of what you speak on a public platform.

These are two privileged people being ignorant and not even thinking once before uttering something. Not everyone has the luxury of working for free or showing up at any given time. Also, if your employer is asking you to come to work without respecting your work hours or boundaries, that is super unhealthy and toxic. There are companies and individuals who will give you the experience you need without you having to do it without pay. Malvika, you're a public person, an influencer who has quite a substantial audience; so, kindly learn to use your platform for good instead of promoting such toxic thoughts. It's a huge responsibility and it's high time you take it seriously instead of just looking at the benefits you're reaping out of it. On one hand you talk about self-love, and on the other hand, this is the kind of perspective you're pushing towards your followers? This is just very disappointing to see.

What bullshit is she saying , dont draw ur boundaries , dont have limited working, 🥺 , work on weekends that too for free, just becoz u admire the founder can learn 10 yrs down the line by working at a minimum appraisal. It reflects the toxic work culture in their company. literally they have this mentality and she heirs people . Looks like trying to manipulate and feeding this toxic work culture as normal in naive youngsters mind, to have such employees. They r doing this all for money , but dont expect their people who made this all happen to even expect to be paid and have boundaries. Hipocrasy .😒

DO NOT WORK FOR FREE. IF you have the skill, if you've invested in yourself for it, ofc you'd want to reap the benefits, I mean duhh! Even if its not grand ass money, unpaid internships or jobs, where you work your ass off, it is not worth it. At the end of the day, even we need to pay our bills, we need to work for our stomach. Please, DO NOT WORK FOR FREE whatever it is. Rest, I did enjoy the talk.

Burning oneself out just because you're getting an opportunity is not the right way. Get paid for what you're worth. Don't get into the professional world with a slave mentality. I feel like Malvika loves Veronica because of the blind faith she has in her. She seems like a perfect follower, just blessed to be in the presence of Malvika. Looks like a situation of exploitation.

Trust me, I can relate to you totally and the door bell thing!!! And also those weekends!! I took a lot of time to get over this. You inspired me today to do lots more in my carrier. My goodness Mals. I can so relate with part about father who walked on us. Because I share a similar background. Only after I lost my mom he is sympathising with me and trying to be there but I can’t forget what my mom and I went through. My childhood and early teen years were taken by me and we had to go through so much to survive. But yes I also relate to the part where it’s not a sob story anymore and how I see it as a part of life and I see myself as a hero to have come out of situations so strongly where I had all the chances to flip into a life of destruction. God you guys genuinely seem like a family to me. I love you 😘

If you can't afford to pay a living wage, you can't afford to be in business. Asking people to work for free so you can own a business is entitlement at it's finest. You are asking human beings to use their lives to subsidize your desire to own a business. If a job is worth being done, it's worth being paid enough to live.
