Algae in a pond can be a real pain! Especially in new ponds as you wait for the ecosystem to find its balance.Sometimes the water turns green due to single celled algae. While other times its the string or hair algae that is a problem.
If green water is your problem the solution is more nitrogen processing bacteria. The best and most natural way I find to achieve this is adding in a bog filter. Bog filters are cheap and easy to make yourself. Ive made quite a few and this playlist will help you build one yourself- • OZPOND DIY POND FILTER...
If string algae is giving you grief and you live in Australia, I've found diatomix from algaenviro to be quite effective. If you want to give it a try you can visit their website- algaenviro.com.au/garden-ponds/ and if you use the code ozponds you will get free shipping.
If you don't live in Australia you could try nualgai- amzn.to/3gTrt4f (amazon affiliate link). It also promotes the growth of diatoms to outcompete problem algae.

Thanks Kev, just bought the 1 litre bottle to try - the special offer made the difference. My water is ok but every fortnight I still have to remove a little algae and some floating plants; this may help reduce that growth a little more.

I can greatly agree with your comment about goldfish and string algae and even other algae. My goldfish can't swim or get to my bog filter area. That area has about 1"-3" of water, perfect for birds to clean themselves. The algae grows in the bog. But no were else because the fish eat it. In fact I break off the string algae from the bog and let it float into the area the goldfish live, they eat it up. Though I noticed now, after about 6 months, that the string algae is mostly all gone. I guess my ecosystem is working better now. I think I cycled through the "new pond" syndrome. I am using a weekly bacteria powder. Thanks again for your great videos.

Thank you for all the information. I'm a new subscriber. Our pond is new about 450 square feet and 30 inches deep with some large goldfish and a small bog garden. Green peasoup algae is a problem. We have a shallow well with good clear water to fill the pond. I am adding clean water continually and am thinking of pumping water back out into a gravel filter and back into the pond in a waterfall for aeration and circulation? I would be very grateful for your suggestions and opinion. Thank you Kerry .

Algae can also be your friend by consuming excess nutrients produced by overfeeding, too many fish, or biofilter interference, ie cleaning, treating problems, etc. To speed up the process of algae elimination, just get some regular food supplements of folic acid. I used 800 mcg and added a dozen for so daily until the algae clears. The folic acid feeds the bacteria so that they grow faster, stronger. The bacteria will also mature faster coming out of winter, and last longer going into winter. Folic acid is very cheap!

I study diatoms and as I was watching your video I was thinking "he needs to add silica'" lol! Light, phosphorus, silica and nitrogen are the most important factors to regulating diatom growth.

@@Ozponds Nice to hear from you - your videos are really good. I'm going to try another water garden pot after seeing your suggestions about filamentous algae. I study algae and unlike most scientists, I study how to make MORE algae not less. So it's like the flipside of what you're doing but there's lots of commonalities. One important thing to note is that "algae" is actually a *bunch* of things - there's microalgae vs macroalgae (think green water vs kelp). And then just among microalgae there's three very different types of organisms called "algae": 1) there's actual green algae (little green balls generally); 2) there's diatoms (silica shell and called "brown algae"); and 3) there's blue green algae which is really cyanobacteria - so it's a bacteria, aka prokaryote vs the other 2 which are eukaryotes. All the beneficial bacteria are prokaryotes too. And what you say is exactly right: it's the invisible nutrients that are determining what happens in the pond. If you add silica and maybe scrape off some brown scum off a rock in a river or lake into your pond you'll get a nice culture of diatoms going.

What about larger ponds about 50 yards by over 100 yards? In the hot weather ponds in my area, north east, the algae goes crazy during the summer. It looks awful and ruins recreation fishing. Catch and release.

I’m in the UK and can’t get Diatomix so is it basically diatomaceous earth?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Жыл бұрын
Kinda. I’m not the manufacturer, so I don’t know the exact formula. It’s predominately silica as that’s what the diatoms need for their bodies.

Nualgi does but not diatomix. Still manually remove as much as you can while you are using the product. Also you won’t need to feed the fish much or at all as the diatoms will feed zooplankton that the fish will eat.

@@Ozponds Thanks, i'll watch those videos... I want make a pond 6-8mts2 in size. (it's not that small hehe) and is gonna be mainly for birds as where i live here in Panama (Tropics of Central America) i get lots of birds. i do want to use some water plants and well i'm gonna try to see if i do a biofilter and have some solar pump or something to have the water going to the filter... but definetely there is no electricity on my plan..
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 жыл бұрын
Yeap I would definitely do the false bottom. Even though there is no direct circulation the water still moves through the substrate and that is going to provide you some kind of biological filtration. Wether it’s enough to deal with bird poo, I’m not sure. I would love it if you let me and everyone else here know how it all turns out 👍

My hornwort and water lettuce all have algae on them.. even though I’ve read both help with algae 😑 I’m in Miami, Florida so it gets hot and sunny most days here, I recently got a shade for the ponds since summer will be crazy hot, hoping this will help.
