Do you think AI can improve our Landscape Photography?
@sidekickbob7227
@sidekickbob7227 2 жыл бұрын
Of course can AI "improve" the finished result of a photo. But do we want to do this? Why stop at the sky? Why not add in Claudia Schiffer as an mermaide, sitting on a stone in the middle of the lake as well? The result will not become less fake than replacing the sky... I think the AI will open the editing door for everyone interested, but it should be used with care.

Editing our photographs have become an vital part of photographers workflow, the critique with edits are "how much of edits are essential". To add edits that wasn't actually there in the actual scene will only deminish photographers/photography credibilities.

Ciao Attilio, I think that it can marginally improve the result, even though I'm not convinced by the quality of the interventions when you print the image. Most of all I'm convinced that this completely destroys the spirit of photography. I'm disappointed that many photographers consider more important doing less effort for a target, instead of spending time and hard work. Doing so we are killing satisfaction and skills. Also I feel like it's a toy and not a serious instrument for photo editing and if someone wins a prize for a photo like this it's just a fraud

Honestly, most of the adjustments you made were things that we also adjust in photoshop with masks and gradients, just more efficiently in Neo, so not much difference there. Personally, I'm fine with subtle adjustments to lighting and color but not replacing skies and such. Of course, it's an arbitrary line that we each must draw. I try to be honest about what I produce, disclosing if it is stacked or otherwise has major adjustments for creative purposes.

I'm fine with it personally. I see no problem with making our images a little more towards "art" rather than just capturing what was in front of us at the time the shutter was pressed. It's fun and creative and providing we don't pass the image off as being something it isn't why not? Very clever stuff from Skylum!

The ethics of changing the reality of a photo depends on the purpose of the photo. Replacing a sky or adding the moon type changes are fine if the photo is for personal use or something you want to print and hang on your own wall. If it is being entered in a competition, changes are ok in the Creative, unclassified or abstract category but not in documentary or nature / wildlife category. We all change our photos to some degree even long exposure change the reality, but when the changes are dramatic or unreal, they should be revealed.

Hello Attilio, this is a very interesting video & subject. I am a novice photographer with very little post photo processing knowledge/experience. What i have to say is that when I take a picture I am taking the picture for me to enjoy & not to bothered about what others think. When composing my photos I am looking at what i want my end result to be. I have used post photo processing but only with a free application, I have removed dust spots, done some under exposing & also lightening. I only tend to enhance my photos if a friend has asked me to produce an image for them that is more dramatic than the original. The above said i might yet create an archive folder & start by having an original image & then maybe 2 or 3 enhanced versions of the image that i can show friends & colleagues who like the idea of something different. Thank you for yet again another wonderful video. I am going so much from watching your videos

I think you said exactly what I am thinking. However, there will be times we are not able to go back to a location to try to retake a shot we were hoping to get. That is where these AI programs will really come in handy. It will keep us from having waited time and money to get a shot that we weren’t able to get. I know I have shots sitting in my catalog right now that I was very disappointed in because I wasn’t able to get what I wanted to get. This type of program will give me the opportunity to take a disappointing image and turn it into an image I’m proud of. Keeping my time and money to take that image originally from being wasted. Thank you for doing this video. I have have been looking at Topaz AI lately and was unsure whether I wanted to try any AI program. Now, I’m wanting to give it a try.

Ha! I could tell by the look on your face how you felt about this collection of presets!. I've seen you do all of that using Lightroom and Photoshop. Sky replacement IS tempting, but you won't be able to sleep at night! and anyway, thats included with Lightroom and Photoshop now. I was impressed with the power-line removal, but again, it's not too dificult in Photoshop. My verdict is, it's a fun piece of software that cuts corners; but it's more satisfying to know how it's done. If you wait for their next update there will be just one button! ( and then you'll have more time to play tennis! 😁 )

More than being either right or wrong I think it comes back to what photography means to you. To me photography has always been about being able to record something I saw to view later and to share, more than creating something that wasn't there. Taking an image created by a computer or shot by someone else and working it into your photo. doesn't interest me at all. But again. I think it comes down to what you like to do. There is no right or wrong.

I have NEO but still prefer using DXO. I don't want my photography to become "fake" so yeah ... NEO will be used with strong moderation and for a very specific purpose (product photography or photography that I disclose as "software made") otherwise I'll stick to my skills and DXO for the post-processing (no fake sky, no fake golden hour, etc.). Love your photography by the way.

Very interesting topic Attilio. Personally I think we shouldn’t focus so much on whether it is ethical to replace a sky as to why we have come to feel the need for it. Why is it that a sky that is not dramatic and colorful and full of dynamism has become something boring? Are we letting social media dictate our taste? I suspect we are. The photos that get hundreds of likes are the ones which pop, but how long do we look at them before we press that little heart? What if a particular landscape whispers instead of shouting? We are attracted to things that are exaggerated and over the top, perhaps we should slow down and learn about the beauty of a simple cloudless sky again. As for Milan, my personal opinion is that the skyline of Milan without the tram power lines makes little sense, they are such a distinctive urban feature, they have a beauty of their own. Thanks for your contents Attilio, you’re doing a great job 🤗

Interesting topic Attilio. Personally what I find most compelling in landscape photography is the amazing beauty that nature can provide to our senses. Trying to capture some of that beauty and the feelings that can evoque is what I'm willing to record in a two dimension medium. After the recording process, I'm fine trying to enance what the sensor of the camera was able to record, mainly because our eyes can see reality with a much wider dynamic range than what a camera sensor can record and our brain can focuses and accentuate parts of the view that our eyes see. That's why I use Lightroom. But to perform photography in order to materialize a vision or dream that only exists inside my brain is not my goal and not the kind of art that is most appealing to me. I prefer music, abstract painting or sculpture than the digital art that uses pieces of photographs to create an image that only exists in the brain of the artist. If the sky or the light is not providing the most dramatic or mesmerizing scene in front of me. That is a good reason to plan a future visit to a place that is already producing great emotions.

Hi Attilio. I remember some time ago a local photographer giving a talk at a camera club. If my memory is correct his answer was if he has just done the basic adjustments he calls that a Photo. If it is a composite or he has removed stuff from the image like your power lines etc. He calls that an Image. An Image is a free license to create whatever look you want. And the Photo is more of how you saw or remember the scene looking. Lastly remember Ansel Adams most famous Photographs were all manipulated in the Dark Room. Are we doing anything different?

If you are into graphics work, you cannot dispose of Photoshop (with the Camera Raw in it), nothing can beat it. But if you are a landscape photographer, Luminar NEO can save a lot of time in editing as we usually do in Lightroom, not to mention saving $144.00 a year from Photoshop/Lightroom subscription. Luminar NEO costs only about $70.00 for a lifetime purchase plus updates. The sky replacement in NEO is an optional feature that does not oblige you to do. Bottom line is, the difficulty and the skill and most importantly the time spent editing in Lightroom to make your image beautiful and appealing is now reduced to simple tweaking of the applicable sliders in NEO. Seeing how fast Attilio re-enhanced his already Lightroom-edited images and made them look even better only indicates how effective AI works in imaging manipulation. I quit my P & L yearly subscription after having the NEO application last February, and being a Nikon shooter NEO is now my editing software along with the free Nikon NX Studio.

Attiillo, photography is still a art form, and in the past and lots still do we used different film, lenses, filters and darkroom techniques to achieve the image we wanted. AI is just another tool of the digital form of the art. Personally as long as it doesn't change or distort the image that it's not recognisable it's fine. It all depends how much of a purist you are.

I have no problem removing the overhead wires as an annoying, man-made distraction. However, for artistic purposes, I draw a firm line at sky replacement. I’ll make lots of other enhancements to an art photo and I might replace the sky in a commercial work, but art should stay reasonably true to what you saw at the time - IMHO.

I have to say I generally agree with many of the comments here with regard to AI. I am not a professional photographer and when i first started i saw editing photos and composited images as cheating so to speak. I felt that using software in that way does not speak to the ability of the photographer as a photographer but instead to the technical ability of the creator or editor. I still feel this way to a certain extent but am a little more open to limited editing as friend who is a photographer pointed out that photographers have retouched images in the darkroom for almost as long as photography has been around. so yes i believe some adjustments in lightroom are fine as they are only helping to recreate the image we saw with our brain when we took the picture. To address another comment here there was someone who made the argument that if it was a vacation and you want to portray the images you took as the way you imagined when you planed the trip vs what it was when you were actually there than why not. To that I say why stop there. Why not just replace your wife in every picture you take with whatever celebrity rocks your world, or at a minimum take the image into photoshop and straighten her teeth use the free transform tool to make her taller, mybee nip in the waist, give her a boob job etcetera and make her the women you imagine her as? Sorry for any ladies her by saying it this way. Please understand but the same can be applied to us husbands myself included who's body image is less than ideal. Bottom line You take great photos without the use of AI or sky replacement. As a photograph I vote for authenticty, as an art project (created and manipulated image) then create away. Just becareful to present it as such.

Great Video as usual Attilio! when I got back into photography 10 years ago, i came from Film, to digital and as you said, this was an argument I had in my head and with other people who were literally replacing and creating an image they didn't really create. This is where an argument started with a friend. If I made this image with lightroom/Photoshop or Luminaire, did I not create it? and for a few years, the argument continued... I came back from a few trips and taking photos. My friend came at me a different way. He said, your not a professional photographer. you plan a vacation, you go and take your photos, and you hope you had great lighting, good clouds, and on and on. He said you don't get paid by a company to zip out to a location on a perfect day to get your dramatic true shot! So why not have some help with software to tweak your image the way you really hoped it would have been if you had the perfect lighting and clouds/weather etc. You captured a great image, but your timing/lighting/clouds sucked, and you spent $XXXXX to get there. This is Fine Art or Creative photography! So relax and get the image you want. Now you are really being creative. He had a very good point.... I removed the stick from my but. Now I am more open-minded about this as an option. Why not, when and if I ever turn pro I can be harder on myself, for now, let's relax, and enjoy the journey.

It's a real curve ball there Attilio! I'm not a big fan of A.I. in photography, especially when we start changing the sky and the direction of the light. But the powerlines removal, that's something else! That being said, unless we are talking about documentary photography, I think one may do whatever he wants to bring his vision to life. Personally, I think moderation is the way to go, but much more skilled people have done amazing things with heavy modifications. To each his own, but I still feel that changing the sky is cheating 😉

Or, we can steal yours and use AI to make them ours. 😊 I was a long time Luminar user and promoter but quit using it after all the AI tools were added. I enhance my photos a minimum, trying to not overdo it. I am all for removal of power lines, however I would never do a sky replacement. If I made moderate changes and posted on Facebook, I would mention that. Certainly not against being creative and creating art. If you try to present your photos as you see it, isn’t that simply documentary photography. My problem is people presenting things falsely, fooling people, and the viewer simply has no idea. I love your long exposure photography which in no way do I consider fakery. You are a master of that creativity/art.
@christophertaylor7021
@christophertaylor7021 2 жыл бұрын
I personally don't like to add things that were not in the scene to begin with, such as a so called "fake" sky. I see nothing wrong with adding or subtracting in a bit of light, color, contrast, etc. or removing small distractions. I prefer to keep things more natural looking myself when editing. I think the addition of AI allows you to make the same adjustments such as PS or other editing programs do, it just helps you with decisions about where to place those edits. One could argue astrophotography or long-exposure photography is fake, it's not what the photographer saw after all. Many other genres could also fit the definition of "fake" photography. People get hung up on "Its not what the camera recorded" and that misses the point. I know some people who will not edit a raw image because it's not how the camera saw the scene. Cameras don't "see" scenes. Editing is what the photographer does to complete what they saw in their mind when they composed the image. Photographers add motion, pan, zoom, change focal length, shutter speed & aperture to vary motion, depth of field or bokeh for creative effect, does that make an image fake? Take two photographers, put them together at the same location and time, with the same tools, and have each create an image. Will their processed images look the same? Probably not! Few seemed too concerned about what photographers such as Ansel Adams did in the darkroom before digital photography existed. Even he reprocessed the same prints with many variations over his career, famously for example the print, "Moonrise, Henandez". As Adams said, "The negative is the score, the print is the performance." Many others went far beyond simple burning and dodging to become quite famous for their creations, see Jerry Uelsmann's work for instance. Photography is art, to be a photographer is to be an artist, to be creative, convey a thought or a vision. I think this is an important point to remember if we wish to have photography remain relevant. We should all be supportive of each other's work and not quibble about if it is "real" photography because of how an image was processed. Like any art, it is in the eye of the beholder. I do believe that a photo-journalist can also be creative in composing an image to tell a story, but they should always adhere to the truth. Other types of photography such as documentary and forensic should also do the same. Unfortunately with any new technology there comes undesirable aspects, and in photography that includes "Deep Fake", which may be one reason why so many are opposed to certain processing techniques.

Eternal question of "what is photography" I Guess everyone of us can only speak for himself. On one hand if I can replace the skies or anything, why bother going out and photographing at all? If I can use my old photos' or someone else's photos. I can , if I'm graphic designer. But if I see myself a Photo Grapher ,than probably best if I enjoy every single unique moment life gives me, go out there and join the beauty of nature. So I guess it all goes down to feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Buena sera Attilio. I use an older version Luminar 4. I tried sometimes to replace the sky but at the end if the day I prefer the original. Changing sky or adding light that not exists, we make something else but not photography. Considering the other features of Luminar, it's an easy programme, easier than Photoshop. It's indicated for those who haven't much time or specific skills in (probably more difficult) Photoshop.

Really interesting video Attilio. But... maybe I'm old school guy. I believe the best thing for a landscape photographer is to find the right photo outside. That was a interesting video. I use Denoise, Sharpen, & Gigapixel AI's but they are not nearly so broad as Luminar. My general preference is for the final version to be what was at the scene. I have one big exception; I really dig long exposure, which is not an edit, rather an in-camera method. Power lines certainly ugly up a scene, but in the case of the trolley wires in Milano, I would leave them alone. Thanks for all your efforts.

Good video, I do use this software, for those conflicted remember that just converting your photos to B&W is altering reality. Only adjustment I personally have issue with is sky replacement. But I got over it hahaha…… peace

Hello Attilio excellent blog by the way. As we say here in the states this subject opens a whole new can of worms! 🤣 For me I’m all for enhancing and removing small objects or as you did with power lines. Not in favor of changing photos to something that was not part of what I took. Thank you for sharing this video have a wonderful week.

Buona Serata Attilio. As Ever Thank You for the time you have spent on a very thought provoking video. Having spent the last 2-3 years trying to get better at both my photography and processing, I am happy to admit I have used Luminar, for one reason only...to see if it can produce a better(??) image than I managed to edit in Lightroom/Capture One/Photoshop. My conclusion has always been the same..my edits with these programs always seem to be more Me. I'll be honest I adore long exposure photography, which my Wife assures me turns my photo's into art as it does not look like what we saw. So then surely I should like the idea of more art in my photos..no not really. As a quick fix on an often a poor photo I can see it's appeal, as a means to edit my photos to save or even show other people, sorry but this one is not for me. Be Well, and Thank You again.

Sometimes we get a "nothing about it" sky; we can replace it. And not to feel that we are just stealing some sky from somewhere else, we can import and use another sky from our own camera

Purists will tell you that you should not be able to replace skies, or change color temperatures... of course, that would also mean that you can't take long exposures as the human won't capture that. Personally I believe that one should use any means to their disposal in order to create images that will make them happy... however, I feel that professional photographers who sell their work should be limited to pixel manipulation. That's just me.

Enahncing what is I like . Replacing the sky is not my cup of thee. I rather relive that moment in reality by going back to the location on more favourite conditions.

Enhancing a photo to give it a little more pop or bring out more detail is fine. If we start replacing the sky what's to stop us in the future from adding other things to a photo just because we feel it will enhance it whether the object was actually there or not? If you want to create total fantasy photos that's okay and the viewer should be told. However, taking an original shot, replacing the sky and then passing it off as the way it really was is unethical.

Will not do sky replacement, but the "normal adjustments" is OK and not much different than what we already do. Perhaps in a more easy way ex. powerlines. If we replace everything and change all colors etc. Then why do photography?? Grab a random startup picture and replace and modify it to your liking - create a new artificial world. It is an art as well, mixing different pictures, but not photography 🙄

In my opinion AL can make sloppy photographers or ones that's cuts corners into a good photographer, on the other hand i can see it enhance a good photo.

Well, the purist in me, says nope, nope, nope… but then, I think about it… and 2 things. One, the adjustments that you made were not over the top, they enhanced what was already there, maybe the addition of the clouds and light in the scene of the lake, not my cup of tea. But two, in reality, it’s a tool, that an artist uses, to create the art, that they have in their mind. What the see, not always what they saw or what they captured. Who is to say, it’s right or wrong. It’s just a different way of expressing yourself. Now, would I make the jump to that kind of AI and use all the features that are available in AI applications like Luminar Neo, I don’t know, that doesn’t mean, I think it’s wrong to use it in any way that makes your vision come to life.

For a person that might struggle with the complexity of something like photoshop this looks like a simpler solution to developing the image. As for replacing skies.... yeah neah. That's a step too far for me. Like any super power you have use it wisely and for good.
