One of the main themes of “Dune” is the terrible danger of the masses putting too much faith and trust in leaders and heroes. “Heroic leaders often made mistakes…mistakes that were amplified by the number of followers who were held in thrall by charisma.”

In the novel, Paul and Chani had been together for two years and already had a child together, who was killed during the Seitch Tabr attack, when he proposed marriage to Irulan, and Chani already knew she could never marry Paul. Still, she was upset, thinking Paul might be swayed by Irulan's beauty, but Jessica sets her straight in the final paragraphs of the novel, with what has commonly become known as the "Wives Speech." Chani doesn't leave Paul and is a totally different character in the novel.

I think they changed Chani character reaction to the marriage here in this movie to set up the audience to understand it better in 3rd movie where Chani accepts the role of an actual wife to Paul, but shes just a concubine in name only. Just like Princess is wife in name only but her real role was just a secretary to Paul, which leaves her extremely jealous of Chani. Since they didnt have enough runtime to really did exposition on Chani and Paul's 2 year relationship before the final battle here, they set it up this way to make it easier for audience to grasp Chani's role as the being the same in the book. I think Chani's reaction and behavior and knowelge that she is Paul's real wife who she sleeps with and has another son, will be seen in the 3rd movie.

One of the Finnish words for Bull is Harka. a bullfight is a härkätaistelu. So when he said his grandfather Died fighting bulls it was an inside reference to having been fighting Harkonnen. The House Harkonnen coat of arms used to be a bull as well, but they changed it out of this movie for a different Aesthetic. Frank Herbert got the name "Harkonnen" from the Finnish name "Härkönen", which he found in a California telephone book. But the witchy stuff, that's all very mundane to him. For me the lines between the manufactured mythology of Lisan al Gaib and the actual magic of Bene Gesserit and ingestion of worm fluids gets blurred though. At some point the question becomes "what difference does it make?" The outcome is identical whether the myth was real or manufactured: What difference does it make that the story was made up if it ends up coming true? “You can’t give him [one of the people who dehumanizes you, attack and murder you unprovoked and have been doing so for about 60 years] a mercy kill?” I’m a little skeptical she would consider that. They don’t show it here but the fremen have factory areas for making their equipment. So leaving thumpers behind isn’t too big a deal. As George Lucas said “It’s like poetry, it rhymes.” “They’re not concerned about her baby talking to her?” Well they do know she’s basically a witch, and she did drink the Water of Life while pregnant, which you know what that does, so the baby got that too. But in the book they are way more put off when they have the two year old talking to them, which I personally would’ve loved to see. Tiny, way too smart for her age, making jokes, and killing adult Harkonnen soldiers Alia is awesome! In the book Paul actually does give Chani the political marriage heads up, and she stays, though she’s not the happiest about it. They gave her a lot more in this movie, especially the whole anti-prophecy angle. I’m very curious to see what’s done with Chani in the next movie, the book of which I still need to read. For those here who insist that this Dune film is in ow way inspired by Star Wars: Of course Dune was certainly written first and inspired Star Wars in so many ways; but to say that this film did not take visual cues and demonstrate consciousness of, influence from, acknowledgement of, and/or at least nods to the production design (at the very least) from Star Wars (just as these new films did from the 1984 Dune as well), then frankly you are blinding yourself to what is on screen in these films. Jessa and Alex made very good observations of a number of them. I'll add another: the "mirrorball" look of the Emperor's craft is incredibly reminiscent of Queen Amidala's craft in the Star Wars prequels, a near identically metallic craft that reflects the stark blue sky and tan sand of a desert planet. This is not an element from the books; it is solely from the production design of Star Wars (a design that came first). I would also venture to say that Villeneuve would likely be the first to acknowledge it.

After taking the water, he became someone else than the man is father was proud of. It’s about prophecy now, which means destruction. He chooses the path made for him, not his own. He told her all of this so knowing that, how is she supposed to feel? I think it made since for her to leave, at least for the time being. “Don’t waste your water.” I’m not gonna sit here be heartbroken and cry. And I don’t need to fight a battle I don’t believe in. She needs to think, not just trail him. Love her in the films.

Well, as always with adaptations there are changes, the movie did handle the ending differently than the book. Chani and Paul at this point would've been together for years rather than a few months, Paul does have that conversation with her very explicitly telling her how things will stand if the political marriage happens rather than giving her the vague promise of love, and Jessica and Chani's relationship isn't as strained so she also has a talk with her about it. In fact, I'm pretty sure the whole book ends with Jessica's words towards Chani. I can see why they switched it up, but knowing how things go in the original story, it does feel like a cheap way to bring extra tension and anticipation for a sequel, rather than giving a fulfilling ending to this part.

Jessica was very timid in the first movie. When she met the reverend mother with Paul and she told him do everything she says. The reverend mother chastises her for having a boy. But when she drank the water of life, she became a reverend mother and is sister and, like reverend mothers do "plans within plans" Put my favorite part is when she told Paul we'll be waiting, all of us. She controlled paul, and there was nothing he could do about it.

"I think the people of this set just showed up to work." The miniseries "Shogun" they have done the same. Unbelievable acting, set design, story, cinematography in that. Anna Sawai is a phenomenal actress. Look at photos of Austin Bulter in "Masters of the Air" You'll fall in love there. I'd be curious to see you react and compare the SyFy miniseries version. IMO these films are better visually, but the SYFY is better storywise. And the SYFY has really good acting too. They also have a second minseries covering the Next 2 books, with James McAvoy in it. The books describe Fremen having factories, so they make their own thumpers stilsuits, and more. My favorite piece from this film is called "A Time of Quiet Between the Storms" There is something so enchanting and meditative about that piece.

@thyop897 ай бұрын
Not exactly, it's strongly implied that the Baron is a pedophile and has sexual desire for Feyd-Rautha. They didn't include this in the movie but Austin added the reciprocal kiss with his uncle as a subtle nod to this part of the book.

'This is like Star Wars...' × ♾ Watch Dune 84 (and the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary) to see how far some of these ideas have come. Lynch took a lot of the Jodorowsky pre-production for his version. Villenue pulled a lot from Dune 84, while trying to avoid many of the iconic lines of the 84 (which inadvertently means rewriting lines from the book into subpar reproduction) Wearing stillsuits in the fight with Feyd is from Lynch (Paul wears the clothes he intends to be coronated in for the book) The Harkonnens aren't gross weirdos (aside from the Baron) in the book, they are just cunning and cruel. Lynch made them gross, Villenue made then freaky-deaky alopecians (which completely removes the foreshadowing of Jessica's heritage because they all have red hair...) DV also uses the color palette of Lynch (dusty black stillsuits, Harkonnens in black, etc). The visual changes are mostly interesting except when they interfere with the plot 😅

Sad when anything sci-fi gets compared to SW when it's not even sci-fi. I don't see how DV's Dune is similar visually to SW. DV used as much on location and practical effects as possible. SW is almost all CGI and it doesn't have a monopoly and didn't set the bar for huge, epic wide screen shots. They've been around since the start of film. Leni Riefenstahl, David Lean, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, etc. If SW is actually worthy but it's not. The first 3 films were memorable, the next three just plain mediocre, the recent Disney trilogy and TV series, pure childish drivel. I know people are full of crap when they start comparing everything to SW and Marvel.

"If he had at least had the conversation!" He does in the book. Paul tells Chani that Irulan will never share his bed or his heart. He is very clear and Chani is cool with it because she trusts Paul. This is just some forced drama to set up an arc for Messiah.

@@donny1960 It's so telegraphed it makes me sad. PT2 really makes me wonder if they think they can do Dune better than Herbert or are just trying to not do Lynch.
@LordVolkov7 ай бұрын
@@donny1960 I think that if DV had spent less time betraying the books with rewrites he could have still had a beautifully told story that didn't defile Herbert's writing. We didn't need 10 minutes of Paul learning to sandwalk after messiahsplaining to Chani what he read. He will know your ways as though born to them. We didn't need bald Harkonnens so the connection to Jessica (their shared red hair) comes out of nowhere. Denis isn't even a friend of Jamis. His treatment of Jamis' funeral entirely disregards the point of Jamis.
@sVieira1517 ай бұрын
DV made Chani a stand in for the overall theme behind the story, and emphasised it by making the Bene Gesserit brainwashing less effective and having there be (at least) two factions or beliefs within the Fremen. I think he felt that the tradeoff of making the BG slightly less effective in favour of making the overall theme less subtle for the same reason Frank wrote Messiah - some people didn't get it. I assume it was also because it wasn't guaranteed he'd get to make a third movie. So now that he does, I'm curious as to how Chani will factor into it since she is a very different character to book Chani at this point.

@@sVieira151 Based on my theater experience, where everyone but me cheered when Paul sent the Fremen to slaughter the great houses, I don't think that message got through to most 😅 I would have loved for Chani to have a strong personality, but Paul's denier just doesn't fit.
