Hi thank you for your videos on the G9. I love that little beast. Just wanted to mention the Operation Mode option in the Stabilizer menu (panel 3 of 5 in images and 2 of 4 in video). There are 2 Operation Mode for the stabilization, one of which is panning compatible (the second one, with the down arrow). Quoting David Thorpe from his Panasonic G9 book talking about the 2 modes: "... - [icon #1] Normal stabilization correcting all shake - [icon #2] Turns off lateral correction for when you are using a panning action ..." Don't know what it would give with IS Lock. I am never using IS Lock or e-Stabilization
@RedFrameTech3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment about the operation mode! 🙏 Completely forgot to mention these in my video.. I won’t make much of a difference with IS Lock, but it’s useful in a lot of scenarios to switch modes.

With the latest firmware installed in the camera, G9, using the Leica 9mm f1.7, the High Res mode2 is hand holdable. I use Silky Pix Developer Studio 11 pro, development setting to 350 DPI. The end product prints A3+ very nicely!

Hi Sebastian, your videos are a great help! I have the G9 and you are one of my main sources to learn as quickly as possible about photography and also about the main features and functions of the G9. I just tried yesterday a panning and through your video I found out the problem you mentioned about I.S. Lock. When filming and panning, would you recommend using autofocus or it is better to use manual focus due the possibility of changing the focus for example because some elements that can appear closer to the lens such as cars in a street panning..
@RedFrameTech2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jorge! 🙏 Regarding your autofocus/manual focus question; the G9 has a feature called ‘Near Shift’ or ‘Far Shift’. When you enable ‘Far Shift’ the G9 will not focus on anything close to the lens and when ‘Near Shift’ is enabled it won’t focus on anything far away. Using this feature means that you could use autofocus for situations you’re describing when for example a car passes by in your shot. If you have it set to ‘Far Shift’ the G9 won’t focus on the car in that situation. You can find it by going into the menu > Spanner with C icon > Focus / Release Shutter > AF/AE Lock and pick the one you need. It will use the AF/AE LOCK button to turn it on or off. However, you can also assign Near and Far Shift to any custom button. Manual focus would work as well of course. Hope this helps!

what is the best setting for vertical (panning) video?
@RedFrameTech Жыл бұрын
IBIS + OIS (DUAL IS2 if you have a compatible lens) will work best for that in my experience.

I never COULD figure out I.S. Lock and I'm still not sure how it functions but it's good to know what the use-case is. I am actually using it on the GX-9 but I assume the algorithm is the same. Maybe the G9 manual gives a better explanation but the GX-9 manual (Advance manual pg 152) is pretty cryptic.
@RedFrameTech Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it should be very similar on the GX9. I.S. Lock basically attempts to lock the shot off, so there's almost no movement.
@timwasserman590 Жыл бұрын
I agree that the manual makes the image stabilization difficult to understand.

Great tutorial... will the camera shoot video with stabilization with the E-stabilizer and I.S. off? also, will the IBIS and IOS work in conjunction? Thanks
@RedFrameTech Жыл бұрын
Thanks 🙏 To answer your questions; Yes, E-stabilization can be on, while I.S. Lock is off when shooting video. And, yes, IBIS and IOS will work in conjunction. That is; with compatible lenses

G9 smooth video motion challenges --- there are 2 things i'm not sure about: 1) selecting the 2 modes of ibis up down or full, and how does that work with EIS? MY problem: I'm shooting widebody aircraft on runway at fairly close range with pana 100-300. when the aircraft is down the runway or landing far approach (so angle is much less that 90 degrees to me), everything is perfectly smooth, but when it gets closer to where i am, and i'm perpendicular to the plane (like 60-90-60 degrees), i'm having trouble: motion gets a bit jerky when i have to pan more quickly and i am very steady just rotating torso slowly. It's as if the stabilizer is fighting the motion if that makes sense (this is why you use the up down mode right?) . I have tried changing ibis type to full (hand in menu) vs up down (vertical arrow in menu), this does not seem to solve the problem. Does EIS interfere in this scenario? The distance when i'm perpendicular to the plane is probably 125m i guess, and the plane is moving fastest at that point of course. My shutter speed is 125 for 60p 1080. I'm not sure what to do. I have "professional" results as long as plane isn't right in front of me but when i rotate a bit more and the subject is perpendicular (and moving much faster also across the frame), i get the jerkiness. I have tried at lower zoom as plane approaches my point, same result. Always handheld, and just rotating my torso steadily. Any idea how I might solve this (without using wider angle or gimbal). THANKS. I guess i can try turning off and on combinations of ibis vertical, fuill, eis and ois. I don't think my own movement is the problem.
@RedFrameTech6 ай бұрын
Tough to say what's causing it. Playing with stabilisation settings is definitely a good idea, but I don't think EIS is going to help much. Initially I thought the frame rate is too low, but then you said you already shoot 60p. Still, you may be panning too fast for the frame rate. You mentioned the subject is moving much faster at that point as well and panning only looks good up to a certain speed. Then the question is, how to get around that? I'm not sure I have the answer, but you could try playing with your shutter speed. Also, a tripod with a good smooth fluid head could help, as it eliminates any unwanted up/down movement that the camera has to compensate for during the pan. Hope that helps somewhat!
@soneeeee44406 ай бұрын
@@RedFrameTech Thanks. I thought about the tripod, but there is movement on several axes as the plane approaches, gets bigger and then smaller as it goes past, it's too cumbersome. I can certainly use wider zoom, not as cool but less motion in the frame . I'm on an ebike also so tripod is a bit harder. I guess I'll have to experiment. first with no stabil. and then adding one by one. I know many of the plane spotting guys on youtube use video cams in the middle higher range but I can really get very good close up video quality with g9 + 100-300 zoom.

Hi sebastian I am a videographer and I just ordered the G9. I want to explore the difference between a video camera and a still camera. I have studied the technical settings of the G9 and in particular the best camera settings when using the Ronin S2 stabilizer. Even though I'm doing the Ninja Walk, you can see that the horizon rises and falls slightly with my video camera. What is your advice on this when using the G9? And my compliments on your calm and clear explanation.
@RedFrameTech Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The problem with today’s gimbals is that they don’t have a Z axis to compensate for up and down movement. And camera stabilization can only do so much. So, it basically comes down to practicing your walk and trying to use your arms as the Z axis. I do think a Z axis is the next thing we’re going to see in new gimbals

Hi Sebastian, Thanks for an excellent video. I am shooting with my G9 on tripod (zoomed in at 180mm with panasonic leica 50 200) and there is some wind. The video is not stable, what settings do i use? Can I use ois in this case? regards, Roland
@RedFrameTech2 жыл бұрын
Hi Roland. Wind is also difficult, because it’s vibration is a difficult thing for stabilization. You can definitely use ois. But also try I.S. Lock ON. This could help reducing vibration. Also, add as much weight to your set up as possible. That will help a lot.

I just got this camera today. I have been using the G85 and I also have a Panasonic camcorder HC-X1500. Here is my question for the G9 and my G85 for stabilization? What would be the best settings for me for my fast plane spotting that I do? The camcorder I have not issues, but would like to get your opinion for the G9 especially for filming 4k/60fps now that I can do that with firmware. Also want to use the G9 for more photos too with my plane spotting. I'm mostly video for my social media but I was a long time Canon user but I love. love Panasonic for video. Any help would be greatly appreciate

Congrats on the G9! To answer your question: Just IBIS with a stabilised dual-is compatible lens should do the trick for your type of shooting.

Yes. I have a custom button set up to activate I.S. Lock. I use it a lot for somewhat static handheld shots with non-stabilized lenses. Thanks for watching, as always 🙂
@drewllew3 жыл бұрын
So if IS Lock doesn't work well when panning or tilting, when do you use it? Only during subtle camera movement?
@RedFrameTech3 жыл бұрын
Basically when you’re shooting handheld and need a ‘tripod’ shot. Some subtle movements are possible, but only forwards or backwards
@RedFrameTech3 жыл бұрын
It’s there for both video and photo. The difference is that in video mode you can turn it on or off depending on whether you’re planning on moving the camera or not. For stills it always activates with half pressing the shutter. It is basically a photo mode feature made continuous for video
@Fell_Wanderer2 жыл бұрын
@@RedFrameTech I don't see IS lock while in photo mode so I'm guessing its an auto feature, unlike in video mode where there is an option to turn IS lock on or off

very nice channel, do you know how to turn the OIS on/off on the g9?
@RedFrameTech2 жыл бұрын
Thanks 🙏 because OIS is lens related, it can only be done on the lens. So if your lens has OIS, there should be a switch on the lens to turn it off.

how do i turn on or off the ibis ? i say it because i can`t find it

You can find the stabilizer menu under the film camera icon. With non-stabilized lenses you can turn off ibis. With Dual IS lenses you can too, but it’ll also disable the OIS, the lens stabilization, unfortunately. Hope that helps
