We love to moan about the weather here in Britain. It’s usually the first thing us Brits talk about. We complain that it's either too hot or too cold. And then there’s the rain. Always the rain….
But it’s not just us that don’t like the extremes of the weather - your electric car’s battery performs better when the weather is mild too. But fear not lovely electrifiers, because we’ve got together with our friends at Nissan to come up with some brilliant hacks that will help you get the most from your car - whatever the weather!
You will know how your heating bill goes up in winter because you have to use energy to make your home warm. Well, you’ll also need energy to keep your car comfortable. And if you use the power in the battery to do that, it will mean you have less battery charge to drive around, so you will see less range. Which is why you need to get to grips with something called ‘preconditioning’ to get both you and the battery to a comfortable temperature.
Join Nicola as she guides you through all the various ways you can maximise your range in all kinds of weather conditions.

Inflate your tyres to the proper pressure. Slow down -- aerodynamic losses are not recoverable. Don't heat the entire car if it's just you -- some cars like my Kia eNiro has "driver only" heating. Seat heaters work well and are energy efficient. Keep a steady speed. Use regenerative braking, especially in the city. With all those things, I've seen real-world city range in my eNiro of over 315 miles on a car only rated for 239.

All well and good but that doesn’t help when your on an EV tariff. Yes I use my battery to heat the cabin before I get in but I use the battery because it’s been charged on a cheap rate.

Nichola's videos are always fun and well presented. Using things that only electric vehicles can do, such as pre heat or cool is amazing. Especially a long walk back to the car in very cold icy weather and being able to jump on the app, preheat the car and arriving to a toasty cabin! Priceless.

Years ago, in my first LEAF, low range and no preconditioning mode, I found that putting the car into charge mode about half an hour before I needed it on a frosty morning raised the battery Temp to its optimum before I set off, whilst remote heating mode warmed the car. With my current LEAF with its 59 battery I just get in and drive. It has sufficient range for most of my days journeys, (180 worst case so far, cold, heavy rain, high winds and dark with heater and air-con going) Edited to include:- On a warm dry day I often exceed the claimed range of 236 miles.

I realise this was an advertising slot for Nissan. That is not to be mean to you or them. From Nissan’s point of view I watched the whole piece and enjoyed it, so it was pretty effective advertising in that respect - please tell them. I had also nearly bought an Ariya last year but was put off by excessively delayed delivery and cold feet about the UK charging infrastructure. I think this form of advertising works well because I get something out of it as well as Nissan the sponsor. So I would be happy to see a little bit, but not too much, more of this.

@@donandjune I think the idea is to reduce the cabin temperature slightly and use the heated seats. Turning the heating off completely is probably not a good idea as the windows start to mist up (and opening the windows to fix this is really bad).

Ah but if you use street charging if you precondition your still using your battery so no benefits as well as small journeys doesn’t have time

I agree on short journeys there is no range benefit to precondition your car. Most commutes I don't precondition unless its to clear the screen of ice/demist it and get into a nice warm cabin when minus 6.

I have an EV and solar with batteries, so I fell for the con. I've had the EV for just over 2 years and it will be going back in November. Sorry to be negative, but EV's aren't there yet. My EV car range drops by around a third in the winter. I've tried doing the pre-heating thing but that consumes a lot of electricity when plugged in, and that's not cheap! Probably costs about 50p (ten bob in old money!) to warm the car and battery. It draws 7kW while preheating and at 33p per kWh in the day, that's over £2 an hour! That becomes expensive over a week. I could use the stored energy from the battery, charging at the cheaper rate, but that reduces the available range. Going to Eco-mode adds about 10 miles to the overall mileage - on an ideal warmer day with a full charge. Usually it's less than that. In the summer the car is great, in the winter it's awful. The heater doesn't really get warm when it's really cold, heated seats are good for your bum, but your hands are still freezing, and why should you dress up for the arctic in a car? Mind you it does clear the screen very quickly.... Sadly, I'll probably give up with the EV for a few years, until everything is sorted, and we find more environmentally friendly ways of making batteries.

I guess it depends on the daily journey you do. Presuming that you have a home charger you leave home with full range available, dependent on the weather etc. If that range is more than your daily journey EVs make perfect sense on several levels. If you do not need to charge whilst away from home there are large fuel cost savings, whilst the driving is so much more pleasant. You need a slight change of mindset with an EV. No need for a weekly visit to a Petrol pump, With an EV that is done whilst you 'do life'. An awareness of how you drive helps, 'foot to the floor' is wasteful in any car, EVs go best driven softly, but not necessarly slowly. Look at your average speed recorder, in any car, you will be surprised how slow your average speed is in reality.
@narrowboatlongpod4176
@narrowboatlongpod4176 4 ай бұрын
There's nothing environmentally friendly about an ICE car and its fuel, so the battery thing is really not valid. I really prefer my EV in winter as it's warm and toasty when I get in. I use the EV battery to precondition as my charger is only "on" during cheap rate and that's not when I want to precondition. It costs so little to charge at home that it really isn't an issue unless you are doing so many miles each day that it impacts your range. In which case, an EV probably isn't the best choice for you at the moment.
@pauld7827
@pauld7827 4 ай бұрын
@@narrowboatlongpod4176 I'm sorry but the battery thing is very valid! They use sulphuric acid in the manufacture that gets flushed into the environment. They use kids to mine the raw materials. OK, that's not an environmental issue, but it is an humanitarian one. The amount of pollution created to build an ICE car overall, is actually less than an EV. When turning to the running of an EV, there is no way that you can guarantee that you are using 'green' electricity. There are now genuine and legitimate concerns that solar and wind turbines at the end of life, are a a pollution nightmare. You can't just keep burying these things. The politicians are bringing in extortionate parking fees for EV's (see Paris) because of their worse environmental impact over the entire life cycle of and EV..... Your winter experience, sadly, doesn't match mine. My car just doesn't put out enough heat. So while I enjoy the smooth and quiet running, the instant acceleration and the previously cheaper running costs. I don't think EV's are there yet and of course we have other technologies coming along.
@CampGareth
@CampGareth 4 ай бұрын
@pauld7827 Paul, what on earth have you been reading? The Paris parking costs are for SUVs not specifically EVs. You'd be hit just as hard in a Range Rover. Yes yes pollution to build, but cars last well over a hundred thousand miles these days and in a petrol car that means a lot of burnt fuel and CO2 emitted, it easily outweighs production pollution. You can definitely guarantee you're using green electricity, use home solar panels to charge. Even if you're not you can keep an eye on grid co2 per kwh and charge when it's green. My region is often 98% renewable or nuclear with 2% gas.
@solentbum
@solentbum 4 ай бұрын
@@pauld7827 Could you help us by telling us what EV you have. I'm not clear where the Sulphuric Acid gets used in manufacture of EV's , it is of course in nearly every ICE car battery as it is in the 'starter' battery of most EVs. But the anti pollution rules in battery manufacture are very tight, As for children used to mine the raw materials, that no longer happens, Simple economics need massive amounts of materials, much more than childrens hands can supply.
