I am at 3 years and 5 months of trouble-free ownership. I also live in a country where snow tires are required by law in the winter months so no issue with lack of grip in icy/snowy conditions. This is by the far the best car I have ever owned (including cars like the Saab 9-3, which is designed for colder climes) and, apart from twice annual tire change (in and out of winter tires), it doesn't need any maintenance. If I would buy again today, I would definitely go with another Mach-e -- likely a GT model.

I'm picking up my 2023 Premium AWD extended range with the nite pony package tomorrow. This was a great video of what to expect. We had a pretty mild winter this year but winter tires will be something to think about for next winter. It was the same in my equinox, the AWD didnt help until i got winter tires. The AWD was great for wet weather conditions on its own though with my stock tires. It's my first EV, so im quite excited.

Bought a gt a month ago. 2k miles, commute about 70-80 miles a day, havent used public charging yet. Charge every other day or so. With the key fob had 2 things most have, remote start, and the front trunk pop. I think the infotainment system is kind of wonky and connecting to my Samsung phone isnt the smoothest most of the time. All in all, super cool car, first e.v, and am very happy with it so far.

I've got an Ice Blue MME GT-P and love it. I've already put 36k miles on it. I commute 400 miles a week. I did have the infamous High Voltage Battery Junction Box (HVBJB) failure and had to have recall work done, but besides that, no issues whatsoever. Actually, the connectivity between my phone and the car disconnecting is a PITA. It happens when my phone is on low battery mode, so it's more a phone problem than a car problem. However, I plan on keeping this car until the battery dies.

Parking brakes are only ever on one axle. In front drive cars the trans locks the front wheels and parking brake does rears, otherwise it's rear axle only. You need winter tires.

Living in a country where winter tires are required by law, it was quite funny listening to that (overstretched) rant about lack of grip in winter conditions 😀 Besides that, parking brakes have always been applied to the rear wheels only and have nothing to do with propulsion unit. Parking brake mechanism actually engages wheel brake calipers. On a FWD car with a manual gearbox you would need to engage a gear to stop the front wheels spinning. You just need to get proper winter tires with proper grip! M+S are "poor man's solution" that don't really work in mildly harsh snow/ice conditions seen in your video! Anyway, thanks for the video and your perspective!
@studzstudios

Totally agree, winter tires are going to be the best bet for good winter traction. I just want people to be aware of why it has a harder time in the snow than the maybe an average combustion SUV with stock tires. As for the parking/emergency brake, my point here was most AWD vehicles with an automatic transmission are going to lock both the front and rear axles via the transmission. That isn't the case for the Mach-E, only the rear motor locks.

GTPE owner here, I totally agree with what you've said. One thing I'd like to add that I really appreciate about the car is that both auto-hold and one-pedal are separate toggleable options. In some EVs (like the Ariya) you're always stuck in regular 2-pedal mode, and in others (like Teslas) you're always stuck in 1-pedal, so I really like that Ford made those optional. There's definitely a lot of room for improvement on the app. The good news (to me) is that Ford has made a lot of improvements since the vehicle debuted, so hopefully we'll be caught up in 5 or so years 😂I bought the car knowing that the hardware was great, but the software would probably be behind the competition for some time. 26:45 In the vehicle settings you can change some of the remote start settings - whether it'll last for 5, 10, or 15 minutes, and whether it'll always warm or cool, or just remember your last settings. Not a whole lot of options, but there's at least something.
@studzstudios
@studzstudios 10 ай бұрын
Good points! Agree the hardware does seem solid (except maybe the high voltage contactor issue) and the software has room for improvement. I'm glad it's not the other way around.

@studzstudios
@studzstudios 8 ай бұрын
Ford's warranty on the battery is 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first and warranties the battery retaining a minimum of 70% of its original capacity over that period. It's hard to say what replacement costs will be in ~2030 when the warranty runs out.

The HVBJB repair was relatively seamless. USAA had my car on a tow truck about 45 minutes after I called. Fortunately, I was at a gas station mini-mart when the car wouldn't start and only about 1 mile from home. Sedano Ford in San Diego had my car in for 3 days. However, the door did have to get readjusted after the repair. I am keeping an eye on whether the repair part actually is a true upgrade of the HVBJB or just a replacement with the same part. On the receipt for the repair, it does say that the part number is different from the original. Again, besides that one issue, my car is a pleasure to drive. The charging station network and long waits is more the issue than the car is.

Just ordered a Blazer RS AWD mostly because it has no “twisty shifter”! They said I would get used to the “twisty shifter” in my 2021 RAM P.U. But after a couple of years it still drives me crazy, no way to know instinctively what gear it is in!

Congrats on the Blazer! I do find myself sometimes going into park instead of reverse due to spinning the knob too far when shifting to reverse from drive. The display will show you the "gear", but agree you can't know what gear by feel/instinct. I don't mind it in the case of the EV and I do like having a physical knob for the gear select as opposed to a touchscreen selection.

@studzstudios do you hear the brakes operating on your car? This is my first electric and it's so quiet but I can hear the brakes. Also, it feels like no matter how lightly I press down and try to come to a smooth and silent stop, they still make a little noise. I've chalked it up to the many inclines in California. I just don't think I've ever been able to hear the brakes in operation on a vehicle.

Sorry for the slow reply on this one. Yes, I can hear the brakes and they feel a bit "grabby". When the car was new and all the brake components were brand new it was very smooth, but now with a little wear-in they've gotten grabby and make a slight grunt kind of sound when close to being stopped.

Great Video man... I've had my MY23 MME for 6 months, and it's the best car I've owned....& I've owned plenty. Mine is the Select model, and I couldn't be happier. The pricing of the Premium here in Australia made the step-up unattractive, but I haven't regretted that decision. You didn't mention the keypad entry to the car when you don't have your remote key-fob or your phone on you - very useful, given that the car self-locks every time you turn your back. I'm about to fit a customised DashCam (it looks like OEM) from FITCAMX - a really cool & affordable addition IMHO. I only wish Ford followed Tesla's lead and used the multitude of cameras on the car for DVR.

Agreed. I had Bridgestone Blizzak's for my Mustang GT Coupe and it made a big difference. For the Mach-E, it seems the stock all season tires have worse snow performance than other cars I've had with all season tires. It's a mixture of the tires themselves being low rolling resistance and the car itself being very heavy.

Hi I am thinking of buying a Mach-E (same spec as yours with LFP). Could you answer a few of questions. 1) Want is the real world range in winter? I live in south western Ontario Canada. 2) How far away does the key fob/phone as a key have to be to get the car to fully go to sleep? I have an attached garage and a smallish house. 3) Do you need to have the app open to receive OTA updates? Thanks
@studzstudios
@studzstudios 10 ай бұрын
Good questions! 1. Range is a tough question to answer since there are many factors. I have a video about in-town range over a variety of different temperatures: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bou2m6htqZ2LmJY. Generally I would reduce your summer range by 20-30% to get in the ballpark. 2. I don't have walk-away lock set-up (auto-lock after moving away) and lock it manually with the door button, key fob, or app. The car does wake-up when I approach and it's usually when I'm within about 15 feet or so. 3. No, don't need the app open to receive OTA updates. The app will notify you when the car has an update it installed or is going to install soon. Driving the car triggers checking for updates.

Did you talk about the range and what its like to go cross country finding charging stations. A big one for me, what was the cost of putting a charging station in your garage and how much does it cost to replace the battery out of warranty? Thanks.
@studzstudios
@studzstudios 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the questions! I have a few other videos where I talk more specifically about some of your questions. Charging costs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKmQhZmZa7GLm8k, Range: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bou2m6htqZ2LmJY, and Charging Home/Roadtrips: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gISaq2uCYsemhKc I do not have a level 2 charger in my garage. I use a level 1 (110V outlet) charger and level 2 charge at work. Between those two options, I usually can take care of my charging needs. I can DC fast charge in town if necessary. To get a 50 amp 220V circuit in my garage, I would have to upgrade my panel. As others have mentioned in the comments, I might have enough room to put in a smaller 20-30amp 220V circuit. I don't have a great answer on battery replacement cost. The warranty is 8 years or 100K miles, whichever comes first. I haven't heard of Mach-E's replacing their battery out of warranty yet. My hope is that in a few years when there's enough batteries out there that need serviced there's options, like replacing a few cells in the battery instead of the whole thing. And/or, there's a newer improved and cheaper option that could be installed. Time will tell.

Love my 2023 Premium. I have all though gone through some issues that maybe some of you can comment on. 1st, the car is not aerodynamically sound when driving with the windows down. Maybe it’s just me, but it gets very loud inside and the pressure to the ears sucks. Has anyone come up with a solution for this. 2nd, mine is in the shop right now because my Ford pass is not communicating between my car and phone. Info on screen is not accurate to real world. Tried updates, tried uninstall/reinstall, but nothing was working. 3rd, I live in Vegas. I’ve been having issues charging car with home charger connection because of the heat. I’ve been going to Electrify America to charge because of this?? Overall, I love my Mach E and have no intention of getting rid of it. Just trying to get these bugs out.
@studzstudios
@studzstudios 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Thoughts: 1. The main issue I've had with all four windows down is the rear middle seatbelt sometimes flaps against the seat and can be annoying. I'll have to pay more attention to the pressure. It does seem slightly more comfortable with just the front windows down instead of all four. 2. What phone do you have? I have an iPhone 13 and the Ford Pass app issues I've had have been due to the app crashing and not running in the background, otherwise it's been fine. 3. The heat is interesting. DC Fast Charging in the heat would be harder on the battery/components. What is the issue at home? Do you have to park outside/in the sun to charge? Can you charge at night time when it cools down? I've had my car tell me to plug in one time when it was really hot (~120F) so it could run the AC compressor to cool the battery.

I use the 14Pro iPhone wise. As far as the heat, yes, car is outside when charging. No choice as there are two classic cars taking up garage spots. It just has a problem charging in high heat conditions at the house. If I go to a mobile spot like Electrify America, it charges just fine in the high temps. Keep in mind that there is no shade for my car when parked at home. This means that the car is outdoors baking from the heat. Even at night during peak summer months, it’s just to hot. As far as wind noise when driving with windows down, the car just wasn’t designed very well as far as air flow into the cabin. The air flow into cabin of car is terrible.

Thanks for the reply! The classic cars sound fun! :) Is your home charger the one that came with the car or something else? Are you using 110V or 220V for charging? If you're on 110V, it's possible it doesn't have enough power to cool and charge at the same time in the heat.

Yeah, the chargers are pretty spaced out, but the extended range wouldn't really save me any charging stops since it's not quite enough extra capacity to skip to the next charger. As more chargers get built, it would make a bigger difference. The one detail I didn't realize with the standard range vs. extended range (2021-2022) was the charging speed (115kW vs. 150kW). I thought the premium trim models had faster charging, but that wasn't the case, it was specific to battery size. The newer models (~mid 2023+) with the standard range battery have the LFP chemistry instead of NCM and can support the 150kW peak. Also, since I don't roadtrip frequently, the extra capacity isn't really necessary and is going to take longer to charge on L1/L2 charging. With the LFP option in the lineup now, I'd still go with standard range.

@studzstudios

Let me know what you think of the capacitive lock and if it's accidentally gotten in your way when trying to open the door. As for chains, you really only use chains if you're driving with snow depth/ice on roads and you can't go above 20-30mph with them on. Winter tires are going to be a better option for frequent winter driving. The all season tires have good cold wet traction, just not good snow/ice traction, so it does fine when temps are above freezing.

@studzstudios
@studzstudios 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think Ford came up with a really clever and well thought-out design on the Mach-E's door handles, but the software to trigger them is still too inconsistent. With the key fob in-hand, they're more reliable than with the phone, but still not as simple and reliable as a traditional door handle.
@jayhoughton558
@jayhoughton558 9 ай бұрын
The door ‘handles’ they designed actually work extremely well and are very easy to use. It’s nice that the door pops open if your hands are full you just need one free finger. It’s not complicated like some people find Tesla handles where you can’t do it without a completely free hand.
@studzstudios
@studzstudios 9 ай бұрын
The actual hardware engineering that went into the door operation was very well done (with the exception of putting a capacitive lock button right next to the physical unlock button). The main issue is the inconsistency of the software allowing the door to actually unlock/open. When they work, it's great, it's just a regular occurrence that they don't open first try.

Lease, DO NOT BUY. That goes for any EV. Several reasons for this, but the top 3 are rapid depreciation (minimum 40% first year, industry wide), rapidly evolving tech, and sky high residuals that make leasing the cheaper option.
@studzstudios
@studzstudios 3 ай бұрын
Leasing could be a good option, I haven’t run the numbers myself on the recent deals. The depreciation (at least current prices) is significant. The main disadvantage of the lease could be mileage and if you want to buy one of these to pile miles on cheaply, a lease could be a limiting factor.

A few of your complaints are pretty lame. 1) All cars get paint chips on the front paint, because rocks and things on the road hit there. 2) All cars skid on ice etc. when you put the brakes on. I had an AWD Chrysler Eagle Talon TSI with very expensive Goodyear Eagle GT+4 tires, and it would also skid in the winter when I put the brakes on. It was not an EV, it had the 200hp Turbo 4 cyl, so gas cars skid in the winter too when you hit the brakes, all cars do that. 3) If you do not like how the tires perform in the winter, replace them with snow tires, or just buy better tires that work in the snow better. 4) You say the stereo is just ok, and that is pretty much that same for all factory stereo systems, what you do is upgrade the stereo, like everyone else does who are not happy with the factory stereo. EV or not, most factory car stereo systems are not that great. In closing, some of your complaints are valid, but a lot of them are trivial, and have nothing to do with the car being an EV, all the other cars have those same problems. The front wheels not locking in park is a big problem, and the lock/unlock on the doors not working all the time is also a big problem, the rest of it is pretty much nothing.
@studzstudios

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah, some of the points are definitely minor, just wanting to include these little details for someone who is interested in this vehicle since some of these things are hard to pick up on if you only have the car for a few days. 1. Paint chips - yep, not unique to the Mach-E. Just wanted to show first hand after 13K miles how things were holding up. 2. Skid on ice - agreed, all cars are going to skid on ice. The Mach-E is just worse than my experience with other cars due to a mix of the tires, weight, and brake regen happening primarily on the rear axle. 3. Snow tires - yes, snow tires would definitely help. I had Bridgestone Blizzak's for my Mustang GT Coupe and it made a huge difference. I'm mentioning this for the Mach-E since the stock all season tires have worse snow performance than other cars I've had with all season tires. It's a mixture of the tires themselves being low rolling resistance and the car itself being very heavy. 4. Stereo - yeah, most stock systems are just average. I was expecting a little more (specifically low frequencies) from this B&O system since it's an upgrade over the standard system that comes with the Select trim.

@studzstudios
@studzstudios 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. 3.2 is an impressive average including the winter months! I'm not convinced the display showing 2.6 miles/kWh lifetime is actually correct. Especially considering the last 2K miles during the winter show the same efficiency as the lifetime 13K miles which includes summer driving. I think there's a rounding problem. 2.6 is probably about right in the winter months, but in the spring/summer/fall I'm in the 3.0-3.5 range. I also only have L1 charging at home, so the car can't precondition from external power, so that eats into the efficiency some in the winter as well. The car is also resistive heat, no heat pump. When you add the Tech included in the Mach e it's a luxury car. That being said. The $10K more in costs is what you'll pay in fuel and car maintenence over 4 years. If you keep it longer, the savings are much better. $14K after 6 years. That's how long I typically keep a car, but plot twist. With less maintenance (basically tire rotation and fluids), longer brake performance, and minimal mileage loss, if I keep it for 10 years, it'll basically pay for itself. After 10 years my ice cars still cost me so much to drive.
