It's 2 am so too late to get through the whole video right now, but Winogrand also shot with the 3rd version 28 Elmarit. It shows up in some video where he's shooting. That lens renders a smooth tonal range, can show flare shooting into the light, is sharp but not the sharpest. I used to use it with an M8 and the photos had a real nice film like quality… By the way, I took a one hour a week class for 10 weeks with Winogrand at UCLA. I never actually registered for it, and he never checked attendance. One week he told us he wouldn't be around for the following week because he had some "monkey business" to do in NYC. I also remember him mentioning he just abandoned his car on the street one time when it had died.

I scored a canon 25 a bunch of years ago and have grown to love it to the point it's just about my normal lens on my Leica CL. It's a perfect fit, very compact, meters wonderfully and is one of the sharpest lenses out there. The fall-off at smaller f-stops is noticeable especially but not that bad.

Great video , the Canon LTM lenses are very worthwhile. I'd fully agree with your assessment of the Canon 28/2.8 ltm, sharp centre wide open , lots of vignetting and edge softness until f5.6/8. I also have the later Canon 35/3.5 (black) LTM. It has a very different character with much less vignetting and better edge sharpness. So both are good but really will give very different results when shot at 5.6 or wider.

So pleased you did this, there have been people who’ve written that he used Leica 28mm lenses, which isn’t correct. Thanks for showing the character of the lens, which also shows that you don’t need the sharpest lens to make sharp pictures or great art.

Garry did use a Leica 28mm lens in LA as seen in this video here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYOwan6ZjqqMjtU I've deduced that it's an Elmarit V3. Maybe a V2 but I'm going with V3. Not that this matters. Whether he was using a Canon or Leica lens. Garry was gonna get something amazing.

@@a.j.fontana Good point. I've seen this short movie before, taken when he had mostly stopped developing his film. So yes, I was probably a bit too categoric in what I said. Matt's picture shows him earlier on when he still used an M3. Near the end of his life he started using a black camera. And of course his early work was with a 35 mm lens. Real life is diverse. I agree it would not have made a tiny bit of difference if he'd used a different camera, except he photographed so close the quietness of the shutter probably didn't annoy people as much as some other brand.

Recently sold my 25mm Canon LTM lens. With film it was adequate, but no longer shoot film. On digital it left a lot to be desired. Replaced it with Samyang 24mm f2.8. Besides being 2/3 of a stop faster, 1mm wider and less vignetting...does a much better job on my Sony A7II. Even wide open (f2.8) I am more than satisfied.

All of what you say about the 28mm f/2.8 Canon is true. Except for vignetting. But wait! I shoot it on an M8.2 or Pixii, APSH and APSC, so that problem is eliminated. What I am left with is a sharp lens on the M8.2 which i sceamingly good for B&W in addition to good color. I have just got the Pixii running, with help from Barth at PIxii, so will be testing further.. In the past this lens was good. All of what you said applies. Great revue, as always. Thanks.

Hi Chris, thanks. Be careful as only vintage Canon RF lenses work with the Leica RF system. Canon SLR lenses wont focus. For all screw mount lenses from Leica, Canon, Soviet etc a cheap Chinese adapter is fine. Get one with the focal length number on the adapter so 28mm lens need "28-90" adapter so it shows the correct framelines.

Matt- Nice review as usual, but I must disagree on an important point; you twice referred to a later 28/3.5 with possibly better performance. I was not aware of any such lens so I delayed this response and pulled out my copy of “Canon M39 Rangefinder lenses 1939-1971” by Peter Kitchingman (2008), the definitive source on the topic (available new from the author in Oz). The lens you show is what Peter describes (p47) as type 5 of the 28/3.5. This lens has the same optical design as it’s predecessors, differing in the new light alloy mount with different filter size. It is lighter (116g vs 150g) but slightly longer (32mm vs 26mm). The change was made in early 1957 to go with the new Series V designs (VT, L2 etc). The same cosmetic changes were made to the 50/1.8 and 35/2.8 lenses at about the same time. This lens was sold concurrently with the 28/2.8 into 1960. So there is no need to look for a better 28/3.5 as one does not exist. Interestingly the 28/2.8 was only made in the chromed brass mount (never the new light alloy) for it’s entire production from 1956-1975. Peter also describes the 28/3.5 as beimg issued in limited numbers (up to 342) in Contax/Nikon RF mount, but NOT the 28/2.8. Btw, your 28/2.8 is type 2, produced from 1961 through 1970. Cheers!

Hi Adam, thanks for being so awesome! I was limited to online info but I tried to pick good sources (Canon etc). I recognise the 342 units made number so thanks for confirming its only the 3.5. Very interesting about the same optics different design lenses, I have the black 50/1.8, 50/1.4, did have the 35/1.8, 35/2.8. Can you confirm then that the 3.5 is better or not vs 2.8 for me and other readers? My copy is better on film vs digital.

Very interesting Video again! Thanks Matt! I was thinking about this 28mm ... iam still looking for good ltm´s. At the moment I use a Jup 3 50mm 1.5 on my Canon 7s(z). But I’m still looking for an 35mm and not sure if the 35mm f2 or the Voigtlander Ultron 35 1.7 is the better pick. The 28mm was in my head, because I think if don’t use the frame lines at all in the viewfinder of the 7s it’s close to 28mm. And there is something special about the aesthetics of this old all silver canon lenses... I just love the look. I think the plan is: get rid of the jup 3, get a 50mm 1.4 and a 35mm f2 and a 28mm 2.8. Ohuuu that would be a stellar combo, I think. But I’m still not that deep into the LTM world. I have the feeling that I may miss some gems!

I have the 35/2 (almost glued to my Canon P due to it's nice character}, and the 50/1.4 which is also great and very sharp. I'm still not convinced the Canon 28/2.8 is acceptable for me due to the lack of edge sharpness. But I'm spoiled by my Contax Zeiss 28/2.8 (SLR), which is very sharp across the frame. I think the 28 Elmarit is the answer for me but then I will need a Leica mount to hold it...

I did not like this lens. Its too un-sharp at the edges and extreme corners, and the vignette is too much at 2.8. It feels more like a still life or product photography lens or something. Its got some 3D pop but the edges are too distracting. Its a little too dreamy for a street lens I don't shoot Leica, but I'm a fan of Leica and I shoot Pentax for the 3D pop lenses.
