00:00 Affordable Watches Introduction
Who doesn’t love gazing at beautiful luxury watches? If you’re anything like us at the Gentleman’s Gazette, I’m sure you could spend hours pouring over all these beautiful luxury watches. The problem is, most of them cost so much that time is the only thing we can spend on them!
00:52 What Does “Affordable” Mean?
We all have different budgetary concerns when it comes to buying a wristwatch but the desire to own an iconic luxury watch can be incredibly powerful. For the majority of us, investing in luxury watches is a welcome daydream but not likely to materialize into actually owning one.
We want to cater to different levels of what you guys can and can’t afford. And just in case you were wondering, we’re not just going to say “buy a replica” as we certainly don’t condone buying fake watches! As many fakes out there hover around the price points we’ll be looking at today, you’ll be far better served by investing in a genuine watch.

The world of watches is something that's constantly evolving and changing so the prices that we quote might not always be perfect but we did our very best. If we’ve inspired you to go on a low-budget shopping spree, but the exact model we’ve discussed isn’t available, look around within that brand's catalog as there might be something else that fits the bill.

Longines is definitely worth a dedicated exploration. The quality is equal to Tudor and omega in the upper reaches and have their own heritage and history to draw upon. Whether it is an insanely accurate VHP which matches if not exceeds a Grand Seiko Quartz, a GMT that matches any other like the Zulu time, or the superb complications of the master collection, Longines is for me , the best value brand on the market. These are not cheap watches but the deliver fantastic value.

I once had a pleasant conversation with a much older gentleman wearing an extremely expensive watch and walked away with a few solid lessons to meditate upon. 1. I don’t wear an expensive timepiece, I display art that I fully appreciate - even if I am still learning to understand it. 2. I rarely wear any timepiece of high financial means during business. Therein lies the luxury and confidence; I have it but do not need to display it and have the choice of when to do so. 3. None of the timepieces in my collection make me a man of luxury. Rather, I, myself, make the timepiece luxurious. Mind blown.

I'm interested in vintage tank watches from Hamilton, Gruen, Bulova etc from the 40s and 50s but my prized watch is a 1970 Mido Ocean Star I received from my parents for graduation. Picked up the Tissot PRX green dial earlier this year. Hands down the watch that gets the most compliments from a variety of people, watch people and not. Wears well with a casual/sporty outfit and can easily be dressed up. FWIW I got the 40mm and with a 6.5” wrist find the watch slightly large. I feel like the 40mm PRX wears larger than its size. I will be getting another PRX and will go 35mm next time.

Those watches you show at the beginning are not replicas, but ‘homage’ watches that have similar (though not always identical) designs to luxury watches, but do not pass themselves off as the original watch- much like some the others you show in the video itself. (Like for instance the Seiko ‘Tank’) They are however actually affordable. Poor show in regards to those image choices.

The Pagani watches shown at the beginning were to illustrate a point that, aside from the logo, their design is practically identical to the Rolex GMT. Our goal here is to shine the spotlight on a few other watch choices that share styling points with luxury watches without being clones, homages, or replicas.

@@gentlemansgazette sir/ gentlemen, then why were they called replicas instead of homages, come on, you know that's what we meant when we made these comments, you could've illustrated the point by showing a Pagani design and calling it a homage and then showing a counterfeit Rolex of the same model or different and calling it a replica, your answer is not sufficient gentlemen/sir, as I said that's horology 101 and you failed the class respectfully, we don't expect a correction because people dont do that anymore but please at the very least don't give us a weak excuse please.

Good stuff. I wish Seiko made their version of the Tank in stainless instead of gold. The 34 mm mechanical Timex Marlin is perhaps the greatest value in all of horology. Its not a hommage watch, but a true original. It's perhaps my favorite dress watch even if retails for around only $200.Both the black dial version and the ivory colored one look exquisite and have a vintage feel with the domed crystal. My quibble is not specifically with you, but the trend of substituting big clunky dive watches and other larger bracelet watches for proper dress watches when wearing a blazer or suit. It reminds me of those wearing sneakers with suits. Its just a bad look. Watches have unfortunately become more bling oriented and something someone wear ostentatiously as a visible sign of wealth. A proper dress watch is very hard to pull off once it gets above 40 mm in diameter. If you really have such large wrists you can pull it off, but few that wear them, wear them that well.

Some good suggestions for the most part. For the Orient RA-AS0102S, the watch doesn't have a moon phase. That is actually a 24 hour indicator, with the sun on one half of the dial and the moon on the other half switching every 12 hours, not a true moonphase complication like the JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon.

I can't recommend the Tissot Silicium Powermatic 80 enough, MSRP is $775, but you can often find them for around $500. The silicone balance spring gives it time-keeping qualities of a high end chronometer that is 10-50x the price, I have three of them and they all keep more consistent time than my Rolexes, with Chronometer level consistency in the amount of time they lose each day (well under 2 seconds and very consistent -- as in undetectable differences even after extensive testing --- day to day). Before the 20th century, most the value of a watch was in its use as a time piece, losing and gaining as little as possible and, most importantly, losing or gaining the same amount day to day; by those metrics these are top end watches, superior to much of the Rolex line and even older Philippe Pateks for a fraction of the price. For those of us who still value the quality and consistency of the movement over the external design and prestige value of the watch, the Tissot Silicium Powermatic 80s simply cannot be beat. I would feel comfortable using one as my sole chronometer navigating a transoceanic crossing and there aren't many mechanical watches I can say that about, certainly no other ones anywhere near that price point.

Back in 1984 when graduating from college I received a Rolex GMT Master. It was about $1,500 give or take and continues to serve me well. Saying that, DO be careful in this day and age wearing luxury watches in public. In Southern California and some other places, snatching watches off the wrist is becoming a daily problem. A lot of the victims were older folks who who were pushed down to the ground during the theft. With cooler weather, keeping them under long sleeves or a jacket while in public is a good idea. Recently, a half million dollar watch was ripped off the arm of a sidewalk dining patron in Beverly Hills of all places and if it can happen in Beverly Hills, it can happen anywhere.

Nathan, while I appreciate what you were trying to do. I feel that if you would have explained things a little more throughly that it would have been better. As you can see by the comments, there are a lot of watch people that are fans of Gentlemen’s Gazette. Your mistake of replica vs homage, California dial vs Roman numeral dial, am/pm indicator vs moon phase indicator, and others doesn’t help. The best advice I ever give anyone when it comes to watches is do your own research. Another is wear what you like and what speaks to you, not what someone else tells you to.

Let us clarify something here, a Cartier is not a luxury watch, it is a fashion watch from a company that deals mostly in fashion accessories including jewellery and fragrances. It is the name only that attracts, not the workmanship.

An object must, first of all, perform the function for which it was intended. It must be reliable, and also cost effective. Why pay $1000 when $100 will do just as well. A watch must tell time and, maybe, date. Period. An automobile must take you from here to there safely and with a modicum of comfort. Period. And so forth. Everything else is a waste of money. If you have money, invest it, do not waste it in something flashy that will only make you a target for muggers. Nuff said.

The MoonSwatch is VERRRRRY far from a Speedmaster. It's literally made of plastic. The Bulova Lunar Pilot is a great choice, but there are also lots of other chronographs out there that will get much closer to the look and feel of the Speedmaster than the MoonSwatch for not much more money

Ok. I am going to give a challenge. Take a Patek Philippe as you displayed as the start. You notice a leather. A second hand. Not dripping with doo-dads. Clear to read. Not jazzed up with colors. Not jazzed up with push buttons. No date. No twisting bezel. Now find a current watch without roman numerals, without a date, with a white or silver backing, with a leather strap. Good luck. I have out-of-date, out-of-production Hamiltons, walthams. Cannot find a gentleman's watch currently produced. I don't want a watch that has a large emblem advertising the manufactuer either. Have to go to low end Skagens which have unacceptable leather bands of an odd dimension.

I would argue this is the opposite of being a Gentleman. A Gentleman shouldn't be wearing a watch to make themselves seem more impressive. You should be wearing it because you enjoy it not because you cant afford an Audemars Piget, Patek Phillipe, Rolex etc

I actually don't care much to have a watch that is or looks like it's from a luxury brand. I more so just like the classic, timeless and vintage styles of watches in general. So I got a $100 watch, but it looks classic and aside from not handling water very well, works just fine. I easily protect it from rain by keeping it covered by my sleeve. I've had it for 3 years, only needed to change the battery once so far, and it still looks pretty much new even though I've been wearing it almost every day. It's an MVMT watch. That brand sells cheap watches in classic styles. Of course they don't look like luxury watches, nor do they have quite that level of quality, but I think they're alright as a budget alternative. Even in my style in general I don't aim at looking any richer than I am, and since I'm at around the poverty line, I prefer to dress like a 1920's poorer person, with slacks, poorly fitted button ups, suspenders, flat cap, tweed jackets and odd vests that look plain and worn. It's funny to me that by modern standards, even that is considered a formal look. Although I have suits and love wearing them, there's just zero opportunity in my life to do so without looking ridiculously overdressed. So even if I could get my hands on a very expensive watch, it would look very out of place with how casual my outfits are.

@@andreleverettejr3747 thats just not true. you can get a great watch for under 100$ - mostly from Casio, they make a few realy great watches for way under 100$. Also Timex have a few nice watches for less then 100 or even 50$. Also there is a great uprising of affordable, but realy great chinese watches, that are made way better, then the price will told. and.. there is always the second hand market. there are a lot of 60s and 70s vintage watches in great condition on the market for 20 - 40$. and, of cource, there is the Orient Tri-Star and the Seiko 4 Sports range. great looking watches, that are reliable and well respected.

You can find plenty under $100 that keep better time than a $1,000,000 Philippe Patek. Us watch nerds like the mechanical movements and will pay top dollar for them, but there's no beating a Quartz movement for either price or accuracy, quartz time keeping is one of the wonders of the world for those who understand it and there's nothing wrong with getting a watch that you like with a Quartz movement and just changing the battery from time to time.

@@andreleverettejr3747 Hamilton's range is largely automatic for a reason. They are a military watch company with demands for high performance and reliability at a low price. Tissot watches are built at lower demands aka office use, and therefore don't require such robust and high quality internals. Regarding number of jewels and the reliability, all divided by price, Hamilton is still unbeatable, not even by Tissot. And I like Tissot.
