It's almost time for baby goats, so a kidding stall is needed! This video was sponsored by Squarespace. To get 10% off a site of your own, visit www.squarespace.com/anneofall...
WHO LET THE GOATS OUT?! That's anyone's guess most of the time, because these little guys are ESCAPE ARTISTS and need special infrastructure to be contained/kept out of certain areas! It's springtime on our new farm in Nashville and that means it's time to get ready for BABIES! We raise dwarf milk goats and Brenda Lee is ready to Kid, or have babies, any day now, so it's time to prepare her kidding stall in the barn. I need to build her a gated area where she and her babies will be safe from the elements and accidents with the other animals while the babies build up the springs in their feet. This DIY goat fence was made almost entirely from reclaimed and recycled materials and hardware brought from our old farm in Seattle and found around the barn here in Nashville. Aside from the 4x4 and two 2x4's used, everything in this simple homesteading barn improvement project was found free of charge. The gate used to be an old bed frame we found in the barn and disassembled, the latch came from the bathroom in the barn, the hinges I found in an old bucket, and the hog fence panel was left over scraps from the heavy use area.

Hey Anne Beuatifull video I luv the way your animals are your lovely pets. When I grew up on my parents farm we had hundreds of animals mostly cows and sheep so it was very hard to have them as pets. We had stock horses and cattle/sheep dogs. I loved the orphan lambs and calves but it was a business as my father often reminded me. Being a young girl I often became way too attached to them. My father was very much a horse man. We had stock horses show horses and jumpers we even had an ex New Zealand race horse. Riding him was like driving a Ferrari, I rode all of them. I loved all our horses from a Shetland pony fairly nasty little horse to our quarter draft horse probably the most docile horse alive. Anyway I would have loved to have your pets growing up. Your videos bring back a lot of my young happy memory to me. Thank you so much💋 Ashleigh💖

hi, Anne. Welcome to the South ! I'm just about 90 miles north of you in BG,KY. Like you, I'm a jack of many trades, mainly because I love creating things, so I enjoy your videos..(( loved the outtakes !! ROFL )) I'm wanting to learn blacksmithing, but that's on the back burner. I've got goats, cats, dogs, geese, ducks, and chickens on my lil 5 acre mini-farm. Currently I'm building a new cottage/barndominimum. LOL The barn is actually connected to the cottage by a breezeway, aka: dogtrot, which allows me access to the barn without having to go completely outside. Congrats on those babies. I'm looking forward to the kidding video. Have a great day !

Anne-- Love your animals, videos, and attitude! Question-- You mentioned that glueing the joint in the gate "doesn't make a whole lot of sense" because it's a "cross-grain connection". Not sure why the cross-grain joint wouldn't benefit from glue as much as any other face-grained joint would. (If it were end-grained, I'd agree with you.) Am I missing something? Keep up the great story-telling, animal-rearing, and keeping your hands dirty!

Dumb yuppie question: Will female goats produce milk even if they don't mate? Asking as a husband to a vegan wife. Thank you!

No such thing as a dumb question! Just like cows (and humans for that matter), the goats need to have babies so they can produce milk. Having milk is the sole purpose I breed them. That, and selling the kids helps offset some other farm expenses I wouldn’t otherwise be able to endeavor.
