Did you ever felt like you really wanna have a German accent... No...? Me neither...
btw, I don't guarantee that everything in this video is correct (like technical terms and everything). I'm only a second semester German and English student, not a professor or teacher. This is just what I worked out and put together from some stuff I learned at uni and personal experience.

Pauline Hesse Ich bin ein Ami aber ich hab keinen amerikanischen Akzent, weil ich immer Deutsch rede. Es stimmt, dass die meisten Amerikaner schlechtes Deutsch reden, wenn wir versuchen Deutsch zu lernen. Viele in meine Klasse sagen ,,Wie geht's" als ,,We gayts". Das finde ich schrecklich, wenn ich ehrlich sein muss. Aber wenn ein Deutscher es verstehen könnte...Dann geht es. Tut mir leid für mein schlechtes Deutsch 😂 Ich habe Angst, wenn ich immer Deutsch schreiben nach Deutschen.

@elena_youknow
@elena_youknow 7 жыл бұрын
+Silagane I totally see where you're coming from but try to see it from this perspective: In the end talking the way it feels most natural to you (in your case British) always sounds better than trying to fake an accent. I know a couple of people who try so hard to do a specific accent when they talk and it just sounds extremely fake! Maybe you don't have the accent you like most, but in my opinion it's better than a fake accent. I mean if you listen a lot to native speakers from New York maybe you'll acquire that accent on day :)

You shouldn't try to do a New York accent. Just go for clear, we'll spoken English. Doing a specific accent is going to get you made fun of in most places in the US. Southerners are made fun of, New Yorkers are made fun, and anyone with strong accents are made fun off. Just go for well-spoken English unless you're okay with people making fun of you.

Like zum Beispiel...
@elena_youknow
@elena_youknow 7 жыл бұрын
+Little Cat Auf was für einer Schule warst du denn? 😊

hi I was watching your video, i'm researching a german accent for a character I'm working on. I had a few questions. if a german was to be living in the USA since he was 19, still have a slight accent? and if so how would it sound? what words would be hard for Germans to pronounce in English. even if he's been living in America most of his life?
@elena_youknow
@elena_youknow 7 жыл бұрын
It's really hard to generally say that. It depends on a lot of factors (how fast is he with learning and languages? How much German does he still speak, even though he lives in the US? etc.). There is this hypothesis called "critical age hypothesis" that says that if you don't learn a language up to a certain point, you will not be able to speak it like a native speaker would. That hypothesis is debatable but I think in the case you mentioned, it could apply (unless that person grew up with English speaking parents for example). I guess he would keep at least a slight accent, but depending how long he has stayed in America so far probably less of an accent than I have, for example. I think you cannot generally say what words are hard to pronounce for him. I mean there are some words that are easier to speak for Germans than others but there are too many factors that influence this to make any general statement. If you have more questions you can contact me over twitter or instagram if you want :)
@ClaudiaBelle
@ClaudiaBelle 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for your reply. the character is a scientist, a sort of genius in a way. he still speaks German fluently. he was a translator when studying at the university to pay for his studies. A translator for both Russian and German. he had no parents in his life. he is now in his forties. he's known for hiding his accent. so would you say he wouldn't have problems, i mean would his accent become obvious in some American words? Does that help?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The compound word Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft (pronounced [ˌdoːnaʊˈdampfʃɪffaːʁtsˌʔelɛktʁitsiˈtɛːtn̩ˈhaʊptbəˌtriːpsvɛʁkbaʊˈʔʊntɐbəˈʔamtn̩gəˌzɛlʃaft] ( listen); English: Association for subordinate officials of the head office management of the Danube steamboat electrical services) is an example of the virtually unlimited compounding of nouns that is possible in many Germanic languages. According to the 1996 Guinness Book of World Records, it is the longest word published[clarification needed] in the German language, having 79 letters.

I do a lot of accents for comedy purposes at work and I'm playing a prank with a friend at work course my German accent is either really camp or really angry and iv been told its really good by my work mates so I have 2 weeks to learn to speak in a German accent whilst speaking English as if I was a native German to really confuse this guy im gonna be watching all your videos now but what tips can you give me to really make it seems I was German all along im taking a week holiday to visit family he thinks im going to Germany for a week and everyone else is in on it so the idea is to blow his mind by speaking in a normal way with out the campiness but then hit him with the angry German accent in the middle of a conversation every now and then
@elena_youknow
@elena_youknow 6 жыл бұрын
+tomsworkinghisarseof I mean apart from the stuff I mentioned in the video I don't really have more tips than that. I would say don't exaggerate the harshness (except from the parts where you intentionally do it) because that would make it sound unnatural. And apart from that I think it's just a matter of practice :)

+Amythest Gemini This ß is called a "sharp s". It's pretty much pronounced like the s in most English words that start with s. And for the ä, ö and ü I would look it up on Google translate how to pronounce it because it's basically letters on their own with their own pronunciation (not a marker for intonation or something like that) 😊

@elena_youknow
@elena_youknow 7 жыл бұрын
I think that phenomenon is called hypercorrection. It's when you apply a rule (in that case the w-pronunciation) in contexts where it actually wouldn't be applied (when pronouncing a v). You basically over-apply a rule :)

Tbh nah, not really :D The thing is, learning a language doesn't automatically enable you to speak with the accent of that language, especially because, I think, doing a language's pronunciation accurately and just like a native speaker is the hardest part about learning a language (perfectly). I think the grammar, you got most of that at one point, but you'll barely ever pronounce things EXACTLY like a native speaker would. I would say I am not that bad at English, I've been learning English since third grade but I can't do an english accent when I'm speaking German. Or at least only when I'm concentrating really hard. So, the only tip I have is practicing it and maybe listening to people with the exact accent you want :)
