in my experience that sub-60Hz information is stuff that a listener will appreciate when done well, but won't miss if it's not there. It's not like scooping mids where things get hollow and unnatural, or rolling off highs where things sound dull. being sparing with your low-lows really elevates a mix imo. great advice!

Is there much difference high passing in post vs high passing during tracking ??
@vjmcgovern3 күн бұрын
@@MidlifeRenaissanceManI’d say yeah, when you’re trying to monitor, the low end rumble can distract you from the actual content

@@vjmcgovern cheers Mostly I’m recording live in the same room. Hadn’t considered it from a “proper setup” :-)

@@MidlifeRenaissanceMan low end produces more energy for the volume we hear, so it can eat up headroom faster than you think. low cut on the front end lets you get some more gain out of the preamp/interface, so a better signal to noise ratio. can be great on minimalist drum recording setups, so you can get the most out of your other mics (snare, oh, whatever) without the kick eating up all your gain.

My Apollo twin has a high pass button I can use but I never do it. Might have to think about it

Marvellous

You should experiment between the mic's cut off and the pres, too. As they may have different slopes and frequencies that suite the source better.

What is the benefit of doing this on the way in as opposed to in the mix? The only thing I can think of is there's less to do when you start mixing, but I can't think of any measurable effect this would have on the mix as a whole.

Does it make any difference besides workflow to high-pass at the microphone or the preamp vs adding the high-pass in the DAW?
@josh21129 күн бұрын
something something bandwidth and headroom?
@troxic41767 күн бұрын
When something is already high passed, you'll have less plugins in your chain, leading to better performance and less limitations
@alarson17997 күн бұрын
@@troxic4176 Makes sense. But no difference in audio, just hardware performance, right?
@tehpeasant7 күн бұрын
The signal goes from the mic into the rest of your recording chain and there will be a difference if a lot of low end hits your compressor or your preamp.

Would you say that it's good practice to high pass *every single track* except kick drums, bass lines or sub-bass elements, particularly in a home recording environment?
@tmappe10 күн бұрын
You should high pass A LOT of them. Even high pass a floor tom and EQ it later of you need a little more oomph.
@Bloor00510 күн бұрын
Depends on the high pass used tbh. If there is a baritone voice for example it can take too much gravitas from them if you cut at 180-200. Cutting at 80 will get rid of any rumble and sub freq clashes. I would high pass the hats, etc on drums quite aggressively. Any hand percussion too. Personally I would go FFR for the other drums and tailor in the DAW later. For bass, and again experiment with this, I'd split the signal and lowpass for the sub and have a separate for the low mids etc
