I had to do that to my very first camcorder. A circa-1999 Sony miniDV camcorder that died in 2008; immediately after filming my grandmother’s military funeral. Obviously I needed to get the tape out. I had to completely disassemble the camcorder and carefully extract the tape from the head mechanism. I wish I’d thought about directly applying voltage to the motor like that…
