I went to ace hardware and bought some dewalt brand bits. Starting with a small bit and moving my way up to and larger one drilled just like the video was saying. Using oil. Using an extractor. That didn’t work for me. My extractor broke off in the hole also. I had some issues and troubles with luck. So I drilled the extractor to. Finally, I drilled the complete thing out and had to re-thread it to match the boat needed from the dealership.

Brian I feel your pain. My 88 f150 did the exact same thing. 3 water pump bolts broke off. Ended up cutting the timing cover off at the bolt channels. They had seized in the timing cover channel. What a nightmare that was . Once off I turned the bolts out of the block with my fingers 😂. Then t-stat housing bolt broke off 😢. So o found this tool that grips down on the bolt and then you back it out with a wrench or ratchet. This worked once I got it tight enough on the bolt and it didn’t slip. Can’t remember the tool name but it looks like the chuck on a drill. May try that next time. It saved my stress level from having to drill and tap😂

When bolts break, do you charge the customer for that or do you have to eat your time?
@HowtoAutomotive

If it’s broken due to rusty conditions I charge. If it broke because I did something stupid then I won’t charge them.

Great channel, appreciate the effort you put into it! I don't know if anyone's mentioned this so I figured I'd pass it on. When I started working at an engine re-builders I was stripping apart the engines that came in. Completely seized bolts that would snap off happened several times a day. I had straws that I would fill with bees wax and let cool, kept them at my work station and even sold them at the front counter to customers for a $5 contribution to the social fund. Now I just use a pure bees wax taper candle. I would use a torch to get the bolt good and hot and then press the straw into the threads and let the wax melt down and into the threads, it didn't take much (even upside down capillary action will suck the melted wax into the threads). When it cooled down you could easily turn out the bolt with pliers, if it broke off below the surface I'd make a small divot near the edge of the bolt with a sharp center punch and turn it out by holding the center punch at an angle and lightly tapping it with a hammer, chasing it around in a circle as it turned out. The best thing about this is I never tore or stripped the threads, especially in aluminum. 25 years later it's still my preferred go to, maybe give it a try sometime.

Did you need a special or special tap set since for this application, I'm being told by a mechanic that have to take the entire engine apart because of hardened steel they can't just tap it on 2010 caravan

I just broke one off , it’s a 10mm thermostat housing bolt? Why so dam small😖walked away from it for the day, I’ll get it! Some how ? Probably to short for the vice grip and torch trick there’s probably going to be some drilling and tapping involved?

Progress has stopped because of this problem. 88 5.0. The bolt broke off the at the water pump. They have tried everything so far. They have to take off the timing chain cover now.. hoping for the best.

It's been my experience that if you let the cordless tool work the easy out it usually breaks free where doing it by hand seems to just eat away at the hole. ;-)
