@bremCZ8 жыл бұрын
The term "eastern europe" had less to do with geography than it did with culture, economics and politics. It was and still is considered to be Eastern Europe because of its culture, language and politics, esp during communism. Geographically it is the dead centre of Europe, but thats not what people meant when they said, Eastern Europe.

I didn't call it an Eastern European country. I said many people think that, but in fact it isn't. Regarding the name, at least online it's half and half: some people ask to be called Czechia, other the Czech Republic. Either way, I have no issues with this nation and I certainly didn't want to offend anyway.

That's also right, but it's actually a part of central Europe which is a proper term btw (I'm just used to calling it middle): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Europe. This Eastern and Western thing is just another way to categorize us which creates a lot of mess and misunderstanding, but it's mostly used by foreigners. We prefer using the term central Europe, because it's literally in the center.

You have to admit that czech word "Česko" is widely accepted. What is a literary translation of "Česko" to English? if you compare it how are translated all other countries around us then you must see that translation to Czechia is actually correct, therefore is silly to deny it.
@melig73016 жыл бұрын
bezbotek There is no exact literal translation of Česko and never will be, so it does not matter. Vast majority of sources I know translate Česko with Czech Republic regardless. Meanwhile, Čechy (Bohemia) is more closely associated with Czechia which is obviously wrong for the entire country and creates more of a controversy here.

+Meaty Plays Yes it is partly remnant of inquisition. In the old pagan tradition, making fires on that day was about celebrating fertility and to repel demons, not burning witches! Burning the witch is due to christianity and inquisition. So it is partly pagan (slavic) tradition and partly Christian. Same as Christmas. :)
@smutnejklaun8 жыл бұрын
+Htm Bida You hit the nail on the head with Christmas, I think. This tradition has nothing in common with Christianity in its roots. It was first celebrated as "midwinter", the day in year, when Sun is coming back to Earth and the daylight is getting longer again. And the tree was celebrated as symbol of abundance. That was the tradition for both Germanic and Slavic nations which have same roots in fact. But in the Christian era, the tradition was distorted / twisted and the Christian symbols were violently implanted (pointing to the burning of "witches" in the Medieval times by Christian Church) . The same is with the end of winter and the Morena symbol which was burnt and then thrown to river when the ice was already melted. Christianity is jewish nonsense, it twisted all our traditions and our history completely and was designed to control people like puppets. You are correct that we were pagans once, both Slavic and Germanic nations.

I always like people sharing facts about the wonderful country where I come from, but I also like when the facts are correct. So there are two things that have to be mentioned: 1. Czech Republic is not in Eastern Europe, it is Central (being part of the "Eastern Block" back then doesn´t mean that it is Eastern European country). The country is a connection between the East and West of Europe and therefore has its own specific culture (still very different to the Eastern countries). Therefore you should not refer it as Eastern European country. 2. St. Mikulas is not another Santa Claus. It is different tradition, not associated with Christmas at all. Czech "Santa" (if I have to call it this way) is "Ježíšek" (little Jesus).
@johntopolovsky31978 жыл бұрын
Correction: The Czech Republic (as well as Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland ), according to most reference material I have reviewed, are part of Central Europe. However, during the Cold War, the CIA lumped all the Warsaw Pact nations into the "Eastern Europe" construct. The Western media adopted this CIA fallacy (propaganda) and the myth that these countries were part of Eastern Europe began; it still festers in the minds of many to this day. Writings prior to WW2 refer to those lands, then known as Czechoslovakia, correctly as belonging to Central Europe.Additional reading, if interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Europe#Current_views

Great video :) Just to put a few things straight: Czechia was always called the Heart of Europe and we really need to reestablish the term Central Europe, because that's literally what we are, the bridge between West and East Europe, are culture and mentality meets in the middle, and while I understand Germany and Austria don't like that, they are part of Central Europe too, always were and always will be, no matter how hard they try to call themselves West Europe (they only started to use that term during the Cold War anyway). Second the Saint Nicholaus thing is also not exclusively Czech, but again a more Central European thing (though with regional differences). And last the witches aren't a remnant of the Inquivisition, it's a tradition predating Christianity - it was a ritual to scare winter away until it's its turn to take the throne again, it's a Slavic tradition. But generally a good video indeed!
@2120255108 жыл бұрын

However, this cold war expression is still used by some and refers to countries from the former Eastern block (under the Soviet influence 1945 - 1989). Nevertheless, labelling the CZ as an Eastern European country today is misleading and incorrect. It is a Central European. The difference between Central and Eastern Europe are too big to ignore them.

Rule no. 1) Do not call it Czechia or you're not gonna get far in the land of beer.
@LukasHylsky8 жыл бұрын
Rule number 0) please Call our country Czechia, because using political name for every single occasion is simply nonsence. Anyone who is opposing our name Czechia is stupid, uneducated and low-minded 😊
@iglidor8 жыл бұрын
Exactly. No one is calling Germany its full name unless ocassion calls for it. Only reason to not call it Czechia is because it can get confusing about if you are talking about one specific part of it or if you mean entire country (that includes also Moravia and Silesia)
@philipcooper82978 жыл бұрын
iglidor The whole Czechia idea comes from Prague, the rest of the country is alright with using the good old and plain Czech republic.
@LukasHylsky8 жыл бұрын
iglidor Well word Bohemia which is English equivalent for third part of the country (Čechy), is well known, so there can be no confusion I think.
@iglidor8 жыл бұрын
Philip Cooper Huh? Did anyone say that it is wrong to call it Czech Republic? We are talking about fact that it is not issue shortening it if you want. Not that full name is wrong.

The word "pistol" comes from czech. Original word "píšťala"(pee-sh-tya-la) was the name of the first handguns in the 15-16th century and means "pipe" or "flute", because handguns back then consisted only of a single barrel that resembled a flute. It then mutilated to the word of "pistole"(pees-toll-e).

sęcrėt stãlker Hi, Czechia is a deeply historical and properly formed official name, far older than Czech Republic (notice, both capitalized) or Czechoslovakia. It comes from Latin, like all names that are, or were, part of our history, Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia, Ruthenia, Lusatia... The ending -ia means the "land of", Czechia = the land of Czechs, Slovakia = the land of Slovaks. It's a beautiful name; just learn a bit about it before hating. We have so much pointless hate in this world. Thank you for reaching out.

Wait.... so the Czech Santa travels with an Angel and the Devil. The Angel gives out toys, while the "evil" ones gives out food and coal to heat the house and stay warm.... I am pretty sure the Devil is the good guy here. The Devil is a damn humanitarian!
@Anschee8 жыл бұрын
about "czech santa". We can´t named Santa because Santa is comercial produkt of industry. When u can say about Santa Klaus or Father of xmas so we have Baby Jesus, who gives us presents. Toys etc. It symbolises how he borned and gave presents from visitors. The tradition about Mikulas comes from a long history about him. Refer story about St. Mikulas (or Nikolas) who visited every year a small chilren, who were ill or had not parents, and gave them a small presents. Devils and Angels were added during ages, maybe thx religion. Today teens and children wear costumes of thoose three and visit families during evening. Mikulas has a book of bad behavior, so child must sings a song or says a poem about Mikulas. After that Angel gives to child a small sweet. Its similar like Hallowen´s play trick or treat. In our climate is heaven or hell.
