Just bought the R-10 to record Tenor Saxophone. I am impressed with the warmth it adds as compared to the Shure SM27 condenser I normally use. It gives me the real rich tone of the horn. I only add a little compression and reverb when mixing the Royer recorded track. Warm and smooth. Good investment.

Great mic, congratulations on the R-10, I'll be adding a pair for sure. I already own the fabulous R-121, and when I heard the R-10 and R-121comparrison on that heavy axe riff, I instantly thought if I had one of each, I'd use both as they each brought their own sound to the party! The R-10's tonal character really added a nice barky 'umph' to the axe's chunky riff, while the R-121 added a lush open top end for definition and articulation. Top work Fellas!

Hello there Royerlabs, I'm looking forward to get a new mic and I have my eyes on this one in particular, R-10, My question is you think you can use it for lead vocals such as for rap or rock ? Or would you consider to getting a different type of mic? Honestly from the youtube reviews I really like the sound of it but it seems people use it for guitars and cabinets more than anything. Thank you ! -ezio
@royerlabs
@royerlabs 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Ezio. Sorry for the late reply. Royer microphones can be used for vocals but you need to be careful because ribbon microphones are very sensitive to bursts of wind. Make sure to use a pop filter so you don't damage the ribbon element. Ribbons also have a natural warm sounds which suits certain voices really well but others might need a bit of brighting up. I would suggest checking out our sister company Mojave Audio (same microphone designer). They have excellent condenser microphones for vocals and voice overs. The Mojave MA-50 is in the same price range as the R-10. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

Just purchased the R-10...do you recommend a Shock Mount for this mic, or does the stock mount work across the board? Thanks!
@royerlabs
@royerlabs 5 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your new microphone! The mic’s transducer is internally shock mounted. However, in severe situations a shock mount can take isolation to the next level.

How does the R10 do on strings?
@royerlabs
@royerlabs 6 жыл бұрын
It's a good mic for strings. You won't get that scratchy emphasized rosin sound common to many recording of strings, and the highs are sweet. A few of the R-10 reviews pointed out that the mic was particularly good on acoustic guitars and fiddle.

Hey Royer Labs, I have the R10 and I wanted to record an upright Bass with it. The bass will be run through an amp about 3 feet from it to the right, so I want as little of the amp to come through as well as the horn section about 7 feet on the other side. I just want to get the natural bass sound. Do you have any recommendations on a setup? A friend suggested midway up just below the neck facing up and down, but I thing there would be a lot of bleed from the amp through the floor. I think about 2 feet back, 1 foot up, and pointing at the bottom of the neck. What are your thoughts?
@royerlabs
@royerlabs 4 жыл бұрын
I like your friend's suggestion. The right and left sides won't get much bass amp or trumpet bleed because the null sides of the mic will be facing them, and that should be a decent sounding position, although you might want to try moving it a little lower. Start with that and see how you like it. -John Jennings
@jawsxx8683
@jawsxx8683 4 жыл бұрын
Hey John. Thanks for the reply. I simulated the scenario in my studio- the R10 as well as every other mic I have had an incredible amount of bleed...even with a vocal mud guard. I did some more research and found that I can pick up a clip-on mic that works great for this application, so I'll just go this route. If I could do a more controlled recording, I would use this mic hands down, unfortunately, I don't get that option.

@@royerlabs hey! Forgive me I’m quite an idiot so just to be clear. Cable is properly wired and I accidentally send 48v to the mic. It’s not gonna damage to the any electronics or the ribbon element. Right? Thanks. :))
@royerlabs
@royerlabs 3 жыл бұрын
@@icaru920 You're not at all! This is a great question! When using properly wired microphone cables (which virtually all of them are) you can turn phantom power off and on all day and it will never get to the ribbon ;) so you should be good!

Why aren’t there many ribbons on vocal videos? Not a good idea?
@annekedebruyn7797
@annekedebruyn7797 4 жыл бұрын
Ribbons are fantastic on vocals but it has to fit the voice and you need a good distance away from the mic if you want a natural sound out of it. Thus having a good vocal room is necessary. Today, many people prefer a more bright voice with lots of air which is more condenser territory. That said, this mic is really dark so you have to get the right voice or it sounds a bit muffled. Female jazz sounds great through this mic tho.
