I had a discussion on a fb page about 'should i really post only my best works on my portfolio'. Someone mentioned that there are some people that like to see your progress during time. Means u should keep ur old 'best work'' and your new 'best work'. I think they said u can do it the way u want to. As u prefer u can delete everything old and just focus on ur new best stuff. I like to see my progress and I like to rewatch my old projects and I really like them... bc there was a loooot of lifetime going in some of these. So i would never delete them ^^''''.

Let me ask you this.... If I was looking for a 3D artist for a project, do you think I care what your models looked like 6 years ago ?
@able2likeit6 жыл бұрын
Well. Maybe not 6 years ago. Many artists do a rework of older work. That has a reason. you want to see your own improvement and the change u have been through. As I said i would not keep all of my old stuff but for an example i modeled an old Harley Davidson with an open engline and tank and everything that was so much work. Even if I would model another motorbike again I would never delete this. Maybe on my artpage in another folder. btw u can make folder in artstation what you want to show other people first and what not. I parted my works in big projects and small exercises. You can do the same thing with old and new work if u want to but I am proud of my Harley. And the question you asked was on the fb page too. Is it that interesting to see what u did back then- one person said that his application point was very curious about what his progress would have been. So he asked in this group if its normal that you have ur older work in your protfolio or not. As i said. maybe its smarter not to have it on ur very first page but it should be visible for all the people who wants to see it. For my point of view.

I agree that I would keep older work for comparison purposes but nut to win over a potential employer or client typically :-)

Hi Mike. Thanks for your years of uploading/sharing awesome 3D tutorials; they've been very helpful. I have a request: Can you do a tutorial on how to animate a FISHING CAST NET in Maya? It's been a big challenge to me. I would be very grateful if this request is granted.

show wireframe and shaded with& without shaded shows that you know topology and maby show uv-mapping if its for ie game job? :D
@cr3d2943 жыл бұрын
For game art? Nah, you want to show off you model, how well you optimized your low poly and lastly your maps. How you got there really doesn't matter. I've done all kinds of trickery to get the results I'm after. Low poly modeling is an art form in itself. Very trial and error.

Insightful video. One question: how can artists avoid people stealing from their page? A simple watermark or it has to be licensed somewhere? I'm new and I'm learning, so every suggestion is much appreciated :)
@Deletethis13 жыл бұрын
A big watermark on your work would look ugly and small ones can be photoshopped out easily so it is a difficult problem to combat. I have seen it happen to a couple coworkers of mine but there is not much you can usually do other than bring attention to it/report it/ask for it to be taken down.

@@Deletethis1 I mean dua Lipa and her team of producers copied sounds and vocal style from so many artists around the world. And barely now someone is claiming copyright.

@@Deletethis1 Or be so good and so well known for your style, and /or be able to just constantly update and be improving so any copy cats are always a step behind you no matter what.

what are the different roles one would focus on as a 3D artist?
@DarionDAnjou5 жыл бұрын
if my style is photorealistic, what kinds of roles and specific companies would I target 🎯?
@MHTutorials3D5 жыл бұрын
Darion, I could talk about that topic for a full day and there is no easy answer. There are tons of roles and it is a very individual choice you have to make based on skill, preference, education etc. No easy answer, sorry

Great video sir, learned a lot as always! I am starting as a 3D artist and I need to buy a laptop. Do you have any recommendations?
@MHTutorials3D6 жыл бұрын
Most renderers still use CPU instead of GPU So make sure it is fast 9 Intel ) and has multiple cores ( 12 ) Of course the GPU is important too. I would get a min of 2GB on the video card and 16GB or more on the RAM

I want to be a 3d environment artist and in 6 months time i will have to find an internship/job...is portfolio diversity necessary for me or will only environments do? *Note* environments will contain hard surface models, complex models, and realistic textured models
@MHTutorials3D6 жыл бұрын
My advice would be to keep a generic portfolio as explained in the video until / unless you know what you are applying for
