Great Video Peter and I have to say I concur with Peter as I am the Product Liaison with DxO who sent Peter his version of PhotoLab7. The version go PhotoLab7, that he has is the same as the released version. We do not tell Peter what we want him to talk about in his videos and in fact we give him complete freedom to do whatever he wants to in his videos.

Thanks, Peter. I purchased DXO PL7 and I am very happy with it. Unfortunately, I don't want to spend another $100 on a colour checker. So, I started looking at the OM System colours and, although they may not be exact, they are very good for "everyday" images.

You are absolutely right. You do not need this method in everyday photography. It is for critical work when really accurate colors are needed.

You defiantly should get the colour checker, as it will enable you to be incredibly accurate with your colours, look for when your retailer has sales of attend a trade show where Datacolor or X-rite will be and ask for show specials.

Hmm, what I don't understand - in which aspects are the DxO tools (PhotoLab und ViewPoint) superior to Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop (or Lightroom, as it uses ACR for raw processing)? Color profiles generated from the color checker can be used in ACR, perspective correction (ViewPoint) is also integrated in ACR - so, what is the difference? The only difference seems to be the raw engine itself (PureRAW). Okay, and no subscription - that's a plus compared to Adobe. No iPad support on the other hand (not great for Lightroom, but it does work overall, and offers most of the tools ACR has on macOS and Windows). And the color correction needs PhotoLab Elite, doesn't work with PhotoLab Essentials.

It is all about workflow. I find it to be easier in PhotoLab 7. ACR is quite good, but the workflow is not that smooth. I manly use ACR, but now on I will use Photo Lab 7 for critical work.

@@ForsgardPeter Makes sense if it is more about the workflow, not so much features. Even though I'm a bit baffled at a comment on another video (by Matti Sulanto), that DxO does not (or not fully) support some older camera models and some Fuji sensors, I might still have a look at it (DxO PureRAW might be good for my Olympus m43 images ;-)).

ACR has poor raw demosaicing compared to other raw processors. That's why a few of us choose not to use Lightroom. Just because all the KZbin influencers & the mainstream photoeditors consider Lightroom as the "industy standard" (lol!) it still has the same rubbish raw demosaicing since its inception. Even the (complex) open source RawTherapee has superior raw processing options than ACR & Lightroom.

I did a test in a sunset shot that gave bad colors in Photolab 6 and after calibrating in Photolab 7 the colors are much worse. DXO Photolab hardpass, bad at color rendering for my camera model.

But it also works without DxO. And a growing number of photographers part with their "old" equipment to get a 1000 dollar smartphone.
