In this video I reveal 3 TIPS to help you get hired for your first pilot job... best part is, a pilot resume may not even be required! This is how I did it, and how I was able to pave my own aviation career path as a commercial pilot right after graduating flight school! It is the advice that I give to anyone aspiring to chase their aviation dreams!
Tip #1: Networking is one of your most valuable skills and one that I cannot stress enough in this video. Being able to meet other pilots, ground crew, aircraft owners, retired aviators, FBO workers, etc, will set you up to make connections and build relationships that your resume alone will NEVER be able to do.
Tip#2: Build a good pilot resume... and I'm not just talking about your flying skills! Coming fresh out of flight school doesn't serve your resume very well to begin with. With only a couple hundred hours in your pilot logbook, it's disappointing to find out that airlines require at least a couple THOUSAND hours to even be considered for a first officer/copilot position! But that's okay because there are ways to get your foot in the door by being a well rounded aviator with many different skills useful in the flying world. Oh... and not to mention it helps to have networked and have a connection to help you get your first aviation job.
Tip #3: Always be willing to learn.. if you think you've learned everything you need to know... then you won't make it very far as a pilot. From the private pilot license, to the ATPL, you are constantly learning new things. Every person you talk to is an opportunity to learn more and better your flying skills both in the airplane and on the ground.
Finding your first pilot job can be discouraging for any aviator first starting out. BUT DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED! Your best opportunity is right NOW while you are in training, my tips will help encourage you to get out there and start making the connections you need in order to get your foot in the door before you even finish your commercial pilot license. cant say enough how important networking is in aviation. i finished flight training in august 2020 when there was no job avail. last year i started with a new company as a flight attendant. i got to know the chief of flight ops and recruiting pilots. now i am waiting for my type rating start for the A320 :) i was interviewed even before guys with jet hours and ratings.

I am 2 weeks out from my initial CFI checkride and have 480 or so hours. I've been working at my flight school's front desk for a couple months as well. Not only do I have a spot waiting for me when I pass the ride, but I have a constant stream of pilots coming in so I can try and do some part 91 right seat stuff. I'm also a cadet with a regional and hopefully will have a 121 FO spot waiting for me when I get my ATP. NETWORK LIKE CRAZY AND APPLY EVERYWHERE!!!

All very sound advice; I’d add be willing to accept airport work, even if it’s part time sweeping the hangar floor to give you opportunities to not only meet and expand those networks but get a reputation as a worker, team player etc - you need to stand out for all the right reasons & being in the right place at the right time helps too.

Yes you are correct. Need to be able to somehow build good relationships above the others. But in a way that is doesn’t come across as such. Being friendly and always helping everyone else is a good way

Probably not a people are gonna read this i never comment on anything: Networking and going out of your way to land a job (work long hours, willing to relocate) are the keys. Landed my first job this summer 7 days after my checkride, right seat in a king air 200. Opportunity that i heard of from talking to a guy i went to high school with. Never talked to him during those years but still messaged him later (knowing he became a pilot) to know if he had any advices or tips. Be willing, be kind to everybody from the fuel guy to the receptionist at the flight school and really go out of your way, you’ll make it happen! Jc

Great advice and all things that have helped me get the first aviation job. Just finished some low level pipeline inspection. But I have to ask, without an instructor rating, how can I log that multi PIC time that so many potential employers are after?

Thanks! And that’s where the networking helped me. I was offered a job replacement position for a fella that said I was a good pilot. I didn’t have the hour qualifications to be right seat at most jobs, BUT the insurance company didn’t mind and so they hired me because of word from the other Pilot. I was then logging pic in a turboprop twin. Other ways to get experience is the survey work like you’re doing. The PIC time is so important. But maybe shop some lower time required jobs flying caravans!

Hey Ben! Well technically the conquest can be flown with 1 pilot: but to get insured and certified, a pilot should sim for at least 1000 total time and 200 hours or more multi engine. Of course I’ve seen pilots with less hours do really well, but generally speaking… that is a good benchmark

I am doing my multi ifr starting November 1! In the spring I will be out looking for a flying job!! I have 500 hrs TT so I will be able to qualify for a lot of those medivac jobs. Very excited about the future. I live near Toronto.

Awesome! But hey, not downplaying medivac at all because I think it is some of the best "fun" flying around. BUT with 500 hours, you might even want to throw your resume out to a bunch of other corporate gigs. I have a friend that got right seat on a G150 flying all over the world with 350 hours! haha

I’m in a similar situation. I’m 32 with a wife 3 kids and dream of flying. I always thought I was incapable but I’ve been shown how wrong I was! That’s the hard part for me is figuring out how to provide while training and waiting for opportunities. I plan to work as much as possible and side hustle internet jobs for supplemental income.

Don’t lie on you logbook (paperwork), understand starting at the bottom isn’t a bad thing (be a sponge to learn), don’t sound like you have a world of experience when your ticket is still wet and be friendly (laugh at yourself). Networking is huge day one or day 10,000.
