Poor Alfred. He got the girl but lost her anyway because she was always sprung on Tristan from the moment she met him. Tristan was never in love with Susannah and she knew that but tried to force it because she thought the awesome sex was enough for her to keep him, knowing that he was already destined to be with Isabel 2. Her and Tristan lived in 2 different worlds and Isabel 2 understood and knew him more than most, although she was younger, which is why he waited to be with her. Susannah was never in love with Samuel either. I just think she needed something to do. 🤦🏾♀️ She got a piece of all 3 brothers, except for Samuel in a sexual sense because he died. Tristan was deeply disconnected after Samuel was killed and Isabel 2 was the only one who could bring him back. If I were Susannah I would have taken my ass back home after Samuel died.

The scene where Susanna is talking to Tristan in the jail absolutely breaks me. He's in the throes of grief, she's longing after the life she could've lived with him. They're both in love with each other but can't be together. She can't even finish her sentences because looking at him is too painful and he's trying to be present and casual but his heart is shattered. The complexity of the relationship dynamics is so human, I weep every time I see it.

I read this book in high school and it kind of haunted me since. Mad beautiful and utterly heartbreaking. The performance from Julia Ormond is so good. I feel her despair and defeat when realizing Tristan never loved her or will, like he loved Isabel. Alfred, like you said is so in love with her and wants to make her happy, no matter what have happened before. There's a section in the book that describes the moment when Tristan carries his dead wife that stuck in my head: "he carried her body howling occasionally in a language not known on earth". That's all you need to know about his love for her.

I love this movie so much! Just as an FYI-the bear is Bart, he's been in a number of films. His trainer is Doug Seus. At the end of the movie, that's Doug playing Tristan. Doug and Bart were actually playing...which looks like he's getting attacked. But, that's what they would do. If you've ever seen Doug, he's a big guy and looks like a mountain man. I've seen some documentaries about him and they had a great relationship. After Bart died, they had Bart 2. But, I do believe that was the original one in Legends of the Fall.

I've always felt that Susanna was deeply infatuated with Tristan, not actually in love with him. She seemed so obsessed with the fantasy of the two of them being a couple that she couldn't really give Tristan comfort during his grief over Samuel. She never even asked him about his feelings on Samuel's death. I don't think Tristan was ever in love with Susanna. I think he cared for & had love for Susanna because of her connection to Samuel. I think Isabel Two was a better match for Tristan. She knew how to read people & she understood Tristan's character better.

Great work guys, ya did good.🤘 Very underrated and I don't get why, Now we must see Kristen and Achara react to this! Not a chick flick its an Action Movie, that meets Pretty Woman meets Bridges of Madison County or Gone with the Wind! It has everything, maybe it touches too close to home for many, each of us could be one of these characters depending on your own type. I agree too re Karina Lombard, deserved more to her character, but then you have to make a movie length for theatre timing to suit screening and audiences, as patrons its up to us to use our imagination at times to fill gaps. Where as today with Netflix, Disney, Prime etc you can make mini series 8-10 episodes and seasons to develop story lines and characters! I have always thought this movie didn't get the credit it deserved, stellar cast with stellar performances, I think this may have been around the time of Silence of the Lambs and Interview with a Vampire and for Pitt and Anthony Hopkins those movies' overshadowed this if memory serves me correct, anyways kudos guys to step up and react to this 🤘

12:51 Interesting fact: Modern plastic surgery was born of the need created by trench warfare + heavy artillery, fighter planes, and flamethrowers. Sheltering in trenches meant that the face was extremely vulnerable, as it’s the first thing to emerge…. And often times the wounds were not fatal. The pioneering surgeon was from New Zealand I believe? An absolute hero who gave men (and literal teenage boys) their lives back. I want to say he operated on 11,000 wounded. Another interesting fact: the same surgeon also pioneered “bottom surgery” techniques for trans people But anyway, also: life in trenches was a couple shades above hell. Cold, rat infested, and so wet that moisture+fungal infections destroyed soft tissue in the feet. ALSO, the implements I listed above were new innovations. Nothing can really prepare someone for war… but more so when guns and cannons became shrapnel and flamethrowers. AND, not only was there no actual treatment for PTSD, but in some cases traumatized soldiers were court martialed for cowardice (if they froze) or desertion (if they fled.) I can absolutely understand why a WWI vet would say nothing but “it was ugly.” If you haven’t seen Hacksaw Ridge, Hugo Weaving gives an amazing portrayal of a survivor.
