A true Epic movie. They take you through so many emotions in each character. The PTSD of Tristan and William, The Envy of Alfred, The Lust of Susannah, The Innocence of Samuel and Isabel II, The Greed of the O'Banions, etc. Hidden in all of that is the loyalty and love between the father and his 3 sons.

Susannah was shocked when Alfred revealed the news to her of Tristan and Isabel's upcoming marriage. Everything that she wanted with Tristan (to be his wife and to have his children), she saw him have that with Isabel Two. When they all came upon each other in town during the festivities and she saw them and their children, it crushed her. I believe that was the breaking point for her. That's why she said what she did when Tristan was in jail. She loved Tristan so deeply that her heart (and mind) couldn't handle not being with him. Her only way out of that was to end her own life because the pain was too unbearable. The soundtrack to the movie is always playing for me. James Horner is a master when it comes to movie scores. He also did Braveheart, Titanic, and Glory, to name a few. It was a joy watching you react to this great film, Kamilla. Can't wait for your next reaction.

Tristan's behavior after the war was perfectly understandable. He was suffering from severe PTSD in a time when such a thing wasn't even acknowledged and men were expected to just suck it up and deal with it quietly.

Add his guilt over Samuel as well as his relationship with his fiancee and its quite a lot. There were discussions of shell shock at the time, thouogh it wasn't as well understood or handled as it is now. The experiences of WWI (and WWII) vets helped shape a growing body of knowledge. It wasn't well handled by most, though, for sure.

At the end, I really appreciated Aidan Quinn ejecting the spent round and checking the chamber before he came fully out of cover. That's a nice little touch, because it's exactly what someone would do if they were raised around firearms and had a military veteran father teaching them to shoot.

I think Isabel Two was a good spouse for Tristan. Isabel knew how to read people & situations. She knew how to approach people & when to step back. Susanna, unfortunately, seemed more deeply infatuated with Tristan than in love. Susanna was very delusional about her relationship with Tristan. What annoyed me the most with Susanna is that she ignored Tristan's grief. It's one thing to not know how to console a grieving person. It's another thing when you don't acknowledge their pain. Susanna constantly hovered over Tristan rambling about their non-existent future. Not one time did Susanna ever ask Tristan about his feelings regarding Samuel's death. Nor give him encouragement regarding his guilt over Samuel's death.

I remember the first time I saw this back in 1995. Cinematography wise, it is gorgeous. Truly one of the most picturesque movies ever made from that period. As for the story, it’s a gut punch every 15 minutes. It’s like a Shakespearean tragedy set in the Wild West. And by the end of it I was emotionally drained and spent. Yes, Pitt got the bulk of attention and it would be all too easy to envy him, but I learned long ago what most women, good women, love is confidence. Being comfortable in your own skin. Everyone in this picture gave a wonderful performance.

This is one of those films that is so hard to watch. It crosses all the human emotions, it's pretty remarkable. I remember the first time I saw this when it came out on home video in '95 or '96...I was about 15 or 16 and it was such an epic story. The characters were so well written and cast. it's one of the best films of that era for sure.

Susannah was an orphan, having lost her parents at a young age. I imagine that had an effect on her. Then she met a wonderful man at University in the form of Samuel. A man she loved and probably expected to spend the rest of her life happy with. Then, she fell in love with said man's brother, possibly even against her own better judgement. Then Samuel died, horribly. She fell in love with Tristan, who due to the loss of Samuel, was unable to love her the way she wanted to be loved. She married Alfred, probably because she knew he loved her. But the problem was she didn't love him back and his loving her didn't bring her any joy. Likely only sadness because she was exploiting his love for her own selfish purposes. As she said in her letters, she was unable to have children. Then she finds out that the man she loves is back and is now marrying a little girl now grown up, that Susannah once played with. This girl has everything Susannah ever wanted out of life. A loving husband who she also loves, the man she loves, happiness and children. And in her jealousy she wishes this girl, who's really an innocent in all this, dead. Then it happens, she probably feels nothing but regret and misery. For destroying the lives of so many around her that she loves. Tristan, Samuel, Alfred (while she doesn't love him as a woman loves a man, she clearly cares for him), Isabelle, Colonel Ludlow, ever since her arrival, nothing but misery has befallen them. This is likely the thought process that goes through her mind throughout the movie, and up to her eventual suicide.

A good movie, but so sad. Much like "Platoon", I don't thinks a light hearted happy moment in the whole movie. Another story with a similar feel is the mini series "Lonesome Dove" from 1989. It has a great ensemble cast, good story, great acting, many unexpected incidences and really leaves you feeling emotional by the end. Maybe consider putting on your watchlist. Great reaction as always.

You mentioned that Brad Pitt always seems to get the women. I once read an article that classified actors in various groups. I don't remember all the classes, but I do remember two. Brad Pitt was the example of the Ladies' Man. He always gets the girl, is typically on the "pretty" side of handsome, and the women in the audience usually love him, but the men in the audience don't -- possibly out of jealousy. In contrast, George Clooney was the example of the Man's Man. He also usually got the girl and the women in the audience love him, but the men in the audience like him too and want to be his friend. I _did_ note, as I got older, that it was true that Brad usually starred in films that more women liked than men did -- like Thelma & Louise, Meet Joe Black, and this one.

I don't agree about men not liking him. I think he is an actor who both men and women have liked. His roles are not all the pretty guy. And he doesn't always get the girl. He's played some badass roles that men love. Fight Club, Snatch, Fury, Moneyball. I hear men talk about him with admiration.

Saw this when it came out and watch it occasionally and every time I question if I really want to. But it's just that good. It really shows how family members can have amazing traits, still be flawed and fragile, how relationships can wax and wane and that life will always be a surprise and not just joyful - but also shows that through all that love and forgiveness can't break those bonds you make. I would also suggest a movie called "Last Of The Mohicans" with Daniel Day Lewis. A period piece with some of the same themes and emotion.

This video came in a time of movie rental (VHS places). I skipped this movie so many times because of it's Finnish translation name. "Passions of the wind" Sounded like a too romance movie for my taste in that day. Afterwards I thing when I saw this it that this is one of greatest movies. I put the blame of Finnish translators that pick the crappy Finnish name fot a title so I didn't saw it earlier. Great movie! I'm so glad so loved it.

I found Alfred incredibly attractive, with a steady head on his shoulders. He was the first to decide to go look after Samuel. Tristan did it after Susanna asked him to, although I believe Tristan would have done it anyway. I even admire his fierce attitude in making a change in government. Despite his father's views, he stood up for his beliefs and carved his own path. My only two faults with him were pining after a woman he knew didn't love him back (maybe it was due to low self-worth) and not getting out of government sooner after they killed Isabel 2.

I have NEVER understood why Alfred comes off as sympathetic in this movie? Alfred also fell in love with his brothers wife at first sight, was living his life to please other people, and continued to blame and put a guilt trip on Tristan about Samuels death whenever it suited him.

Yeah and he also sided with the government(and the corrupt bootleggers he was working with) over his family when Isabel was shot and killed by the police. Everyone in this film had a flaw and there really was no "hero". Such is life....reason why this film is very good.

I think because no child should go through life thinking their parents love their siblings more. Parents are the blueprint for your emotional intelligence rejection from there can start a pattern of rejection throughout your life. Since he didnt feel loved by his dad he learned he has to prove himself to be loved so he fell for a woman he has to prove himself too he has a job he has to prove himself too. All these things align he never learned he was enough and you dont have to be a way to recieve love. Once later when his father finally showe his love for him ( kinda to late) thats when alfred finally heals

This is yet another movie that spurred the love people have for Montana, not quite so much as 'A River Run Through It', all thanks to the scenery and beauty. I am happy to live in Montana, not far from Helena actually, but in western Montana on the lands that look very much like this film. To the people not from Montana, Montana is called "The Last Best Place" and for good reason. It's an amazing place to visit and if you do visit remember when you're done turn your butt around and go back to where to came from. 😉😁

Back in the day for date nights I would always recommend to watch this and explain to the girl it’s a love story with Brad Pitt. They would naturally want to watch & I would get to watch this classic movie. This movie literally has everything in it for everyone…love story, war, bears, guns, bootlegging, scenery, lil nudity, drama, Native American’s, action, lil comedy, great cast & great director!
