Why does nobody realizes how important was the gesture of Hatori Hanzo? He didn't just "came out of retirement". He broke a promise he made to himself out of regretting his creation being a tools to kill.

Sorry, but got it a tad wrong. Bruce wore a similar suit (different shade of yellow/orange-ish) in his unfinished movie "Game of Death", not in Enter the Dragon. Unfortunately, he passed away during the filming and that suit was the last on-film costume he wore before leaving this world. Rest in peace, Lee Jun Fan.

This was originally intended to be a single film but the length prevented it. Part 2 is not as violent but you get more backstory. The Sushi Chef is Martial Arts Legend Sonny Chiba. The head of the Crazy 88's Johnnie Mo (bald head with black Kato Mask) is Martial Arts Legend Gordon Liu. Gordon also plays Pei Mei in Part 2. We finally get to seew Bill in Part 2. I have met Uma Thurman twice (Woodstock, NY and Rhinebeck, NY). A tall and beautiful woman. I asked her about Kill Bill. She said that she was hurting and badly bruised during much of the shoot. She did most of the stunts except for the most dangerous ones. Those stunts were done by the great stuntwoman Zoe Bell. Zoe did the dangerous stunts for Lucy Lawless in the Xena TV series. She is many of Quentin's movies including Django Unchained and Death Proof (where she plays herself).

I often forget that Uma in real life isn't an action martial arts type of person. So it took a lot of courage to take on such a physically demand role even if the more dangerous stunts were done by a stunt woman. No actor accept for someone like Jackie Chan does all the stunts. I think I read that finally fight scene took over a month to film.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the rare directors. He is not people pleaser. He makes films way he wants and if people don't like them, he doesn't care. He is uncompromising visionary and Kill Bill 1 & 2 are incredible Master pieces when it comes mixing style, music and east with west. This I think is Tarantino in his purest form. My personal fave is Once Upon time Howllywood but this is my personal #2 in Tarantino films.

Thanks for your reactions! Btw, the actor, Sonny Chiba, who played the sword maker-sushi chef, "Hattori Hanzo" (as others have mentioned), in his prolific career also played the historical/fictional Japanese samurai character Hattori Hanzo in the 1980 Japanese TV series, Shadow Warriors, and Tarantino knew all about that. Also, the scene where 'Black Momba' is fighting the Crazy 88 yakuzas, and when most of the rest are dead is left with a young boy who she spanks with her kitana and tells to go home to his mother, that scene is a homage to a pair of scenes that largely bookend Akira Kurosawa's classic jidaigeki movie, Yojimbo (1961) - that was remade by Sergio Leone as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), the first of his spaghetti Western trilogy (that, A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly). Another crossover from Japanese sword movie to Western, as was Kurosawa's Seven Samurai to The Magnificent Seven. So Tarantino is mixing them all together (a Western samurai gangster movie with anime in Kill Bill Pt 1) rather than having just the one genre inspire another in a different genre. And when it comes to cultural genre mixing and homages to past iconic moments, just wait for Kill Bill Pt 2!

If you ever take a trip to Japan, the restaurant that they modeled the Crazy 88/ O ren fight location from is in the Roppongi area of Tokyo and is called Gonpachi. There is a sushi restaurant upstairs and a bar/ grill restaurant on the ground floor where they have everything from pizza to soba and yakitori. The scene was shot on a sound stage in China but Tarantino had visited Gonpachi on a trip to Japan (it may have been a location scouting trip for this movie) and liked the look so much he made his own version for the movie. I got to eat there earlier this year and even though it was busy, it was worth the wait time. They play O ren's intro theme "The House Of Blue Leaves" over the PA system when one of the guests has a birthday and they bring out a piece of cake for them. They didn't have the roof access open so I can't confirm if they have a garden on the roof like you see in the film or not but my bet would be that they don't. The band playing in the scene is a real Rockabilly group from Japan called the 5-6-7-8's . Tarantino heard them playing when he was in a shop in Tokyo just before jumping on a plane back to the states and asked the shop owner if he could buy the CD so that he could hear more of their music and also be sure to remember their band name so that he could contact them for the film. Apparently, the CD wasn't for sale at the store but the cashier was nice enough to sell him their own personal copy that had been playing in the store.

Great reaction - my memory of watching this is special - I saw it in an arthouse Hong Kong cinema, near the Stanley Kubrick bookshop - in the HK version, the black and white sequence was actually in full color, and at the end Uma chopped off that French lady's OTHER arm, too - in the cinema lobby, on the TV screen, I saw for the first time the first trailer for Return of the King, which we were all still waiting for - that trailer that combined all 3 films, and I stood there frozen in the lobby for half an hour, watching it play over and over again - the sensory overload of the film merged w my memory of HK - re the pastiche, I especially got a strong sense of 70s Japanese cinema - Sonny Chiba-type movies, w that flowing choreography and camerawork (plus of course Chiba's cameo here), all those fetishized samurai swords in a modern setting - and the spirit of Tokyo B-movie queen Meiko Kaji hovers over this film like a Greek muse - she sings the closing song, which is from her Joshu Sasori Female Prisoner series, and O-Ren's kimono look is clearly modeled on Lady Snowblood - this film was a jarring experience - seeing the first images of it about a year before, it was hard to envision something like this played straight - the colors and film-making scream camp - and then the tone plays directly against that - what Gary Oldman might call "a delicious cocktail" - and the jumbled timeline really feeds into that - yes, it was almost like a Pulp Fiction-like momentous experience, tho that came more from the combination w the environment, whereas w Pulp it was the film alone that generated that impact - my favorite moment is O-Ren's entrance into her club - the way that's shot, I got the sense that all Tarantino's films are in some way re-playing his own high school experience - I think he was bullied in high school, and navigated his way out of it via his verbal wit - and grew to idolize the bullies, wishing he was like them - and so in his films we see these glamorous thugs who act like they're in high school, w the very specific social codes and dynamics of high school (the surly indifferent slouch of O-Ren's entourage, even the bubble gum!) - the capacity for force is what makes you "fit in" in his world; it's what counts as "cool" - I will say I didn't like the way that schoolbus child sequence was handled - Tarantino was aiming for some ambiguous quality that rang false for me - Uma Thurman is quite a phenomenon - I saw her chatting w the audience after a stage performance, and she has a spectacularly beautiful use of language that seems to come effortlessly to her - I'd love to see her writing or directing something - in this film I actually felt Daryl Hannah seemed more suited for the lead role, but in the sequel I realized the unique quality Uma was bringing - also, Uma is greater than any other actor at playing a character who envisions herself as existing in a frame, like in a portrait - her greatest performance is in Henry and June, just magnificent - she's also the best screen Aphrodite, and this quality is very well used in Pulp Fiction

It’s great the you two don’t have a prejudicial idea how Quentin Tarantino makes movies. Looking forward to any other QT films you react to.

I remember seeing this film when I was 17. It was the first time I saw a Tarantino film I could see on my own. Then I had to wait a full ass year to see part II. 😂😂😂 But I might be biased for that reason. This film (and I include part II as part of this film. Some madmen will tell you I and II are different films 😅). This is his best film. Andrew, you are spot on with the writing in this film. Yes! Kristin, I love that you knew when the translations were off and also you pointing out the color pallet. You guys are GREAT! Gonna watch your next reaction right now. ❤

I love the Kill Bill: Volume 1 soundtrack and bought it after watching it. Go Go was played by Chiaki Kuriyama, who wore the yellow jumpsuit in Battle Royale. The iconic yellow jumpsuit was worn by Bruce Lee in Game of Death. To appease the movie rating gods, when The Bride fights the Crazy 88, Tarantino switched to B/W so as not to get an NC-17 rating,

One detail about O'Ren's (Lucy Liu's) backstory animation: The guy that killed her father with a katana and torched the place with the cigar butt was actually young Bill. So, he killed her father, and then enlisted her into his Deadly Viper Assassination squad.

Watch every film by Quentin. They are all amazing in their own ways. I used to not like Jackie Brown, but now I love that one too. He is true filmmaker, and sadly he's one of the last.

Hatori Hanzo was played by Sonny Chiba. He was a great martial arts star himself and now his son stars as Zorro on "One Piece. "

We learn 2 things at the beginning of the film that you missed. 1. They tell you who the baby's father is. 2. after she kills Vivica A Fox and she crosses her name off the list we see that Lucy Lui's character is already crossed off. So no need to worry at the end :). Although those things are usually missed on a first watch

Great movie, the bride vs the krayzie 88, the Bodyguard, and the school girl GoGo was 🔥 🔥 🔥 I liked the switch from color to black and white and that's kuz it would've been too much Rated-R. The kool yellow and black Bruce Lee leather suit was 🔥 🔥

Ok I swear I knew the sword maker ( I won't even try to pronounce his name) as well so I looked him up. I think I knew him from Tokyo drift. He is a good actor. Unfortunately he passed away in 2021. He was in a lot of martial arts films. Which I don't really watch kill bill is the only one I ever really liked.
