@antoniochasten3192Сағат бұрын
Great cast, indeed, and Oliver Reed's last film. Every time I see him on screen I'm reminded that he died during a filming break. He promised Ridley Scott months before filming that he wasn't going to drink ( he was off and on the wagon for years) while shooting the film but he lied. His work around was drinking on weekends and while on break from filming Gladiator, he challenged some English sailors to a drinking contest in a pub where he shouldn't've been. He collapsed, an ambulance was called and he died en route to the hospital. What a film to have a great performance for what would be his last one.

Imagine committing an act so powerful that the entire Roman coliseum goes quiet enough to hear a pin drop. Also, Quintus didn't betray the emperor. He never wanted to do any of this to Maximus at any point. But Quintus knew that if he didn't carry out the orders, someone else would have and his family would have been included in them. In the end, Quintus was allowed to show his support for Maximus simply by honoring the coliseum and the conditions of the challenge. Gladiators die with honor, false emperors do not.

@domingocurbelomorales86356 сағат бұрын
The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

1:07:54 you misunderstand Quintus here, he’s not “a slimy little guy” he’s just smart, him and maximus alone did not have the power or influence to overthrow the ceaser in the start of the movie so he did the smart thing and acted loyal, in the final duel however he and maximus DO have that power and influence so he commands his gaurds to follow the rules of the 1v1 duel to the death. He’s an honourable man in my books
@chrispratt36662 сағат бұрын
Marcus Aurelius kept his plan to install Maximus secret. That's why Commodus killed him, so it would never get out. To Quintus, Maximus just looked like he was turning treasonous at the start of the movie. Killing a man's family because he committed treason is pretty harsh but I agree that everything Quintus does could be seen as honorable.
@9thSapperСағат бұрын
Also, in the deleted scenes Commodus had two of Quintus's men executed. He believed they knew of Maximus's escape and said nothing. He made Quintus give the command to kill them. Quintus was not happy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipCZoIagp9WreK8si=-8CWm5XwU49fPrLK

I think Quintus can be easly judged harshly, but he's in reality just a loyal soldier, he wasn't in the influential circle, he didn't know the Epmeror was slain, he just followed orders, until he got to see the truth. After all I say he's a positive character in this movie.

Gladiator is based loosely on two historical events in Rome that stand out more than others. There could be more I missed but these are 2 obvious. 1. Spartacus uprising with a slave rebellion against Rome, aka Maximus stand up to emperor. 2. Commodious based on the real emperor who was also killed. He did fight in most likely rigged gladiator and other games. He was trained by a slave wrestler to help him with this who also competed. Commodious was poison but believed to have survived so they sent this wrestler to finish him off that same night. So in a way he was killed by some one he knew and part of the games he participated in. Ancient history is often more interesting and crazier than the movies we make up.

Marcus Aurelius is revered today as an example of Plato’s ideal of the “philosopher king.” Partly this is because the Emperor’s written words have come down to us in a slim volume usually called ‘Meditations,’ which is supposed to be a fine example of Stoic thought. I never really understood his reputation. He blew the most important decision of his life. Unlike in this movie he always wanted Commodus to be his successor though he knew Commodus was weak, sadistic, and corrupt.
@joerafferty32483 сағат бұрын
48:44 The whole throwing bread into the crowd is a reference to the old adage of "bread and circuses". The idea that the power of distraction and spectacle is often more effective as a means of control than brute force. In the extended version of the film, Commodus mentions that he has been quietly selling off Rome's grain reserves in order to float the cost of 150 days of games. So the people may end up starving in the long run, but as long as you keep them entertained they won't care.

The Gothic and Alemannic wars took place on the Danube and not in Germania. Like all wars against Germanic tribes, the Romans were unable to defeat the Germanic tribes and built fortresses on the Danube as they had on the Rhine 150 years earlier. Emperor Commodus was strangled to death during an assassination attempt in his bath in a gladiator school. Smartass mode off. Still a brilliant movie that finally made Russel Crow (Romper Stomper) a star.

One the of the all time great movies of all time imo/e everything about it is brilliant! Human history is and was ruthless and this movie does a good job of its portrayal, but times back then were even more life and death! Awesome reaction guys. Fact: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 121 AD - 180 AD) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 Commodus's is real and did succeed after MarcusA, but has been subject to debate among both contemporary and modern historians. I'm struggling to see that the sequel can do this justice, this should have been a standalone movie for all times and G2 should have been done as its own movie! I haven't seen it or unsure if I will, maybe I'll just wait to you react to it, because watching you guys and all of the rest of team reactions, sometimes makes a movie that I know I wont enjoy, enjoyable, which I am thankful of, cheers.
