I'm a 39 year old rural Northern Irish farmer, and this is basically why I spend too much time in village old-man pubs. All of the ol' lads talk like this. The delivery of every story and anecdote is so narrative and animated - their whole bodies be moving with enthusiasm over the seemingly most mundane ancient stories of their youth, or just their recent afternoon. It's a lost art of conversation - when we just stood around listening to people who we might not even agree with, but appreciate their individuality while getting on with our own lives.

It is like watching a play that writes itself, old rural communities definitely have turns of phrases and ways of talking that seem to be from another time. I think its magic to listen to. I am from Dublin, my auld fella was born on a farm in the West of Ireland. I found they all love asking questions telling stories, but are slow to give a straight answer!

I was born in the 90's but served me time as a bricklayer from 14 in between school, apprentice to me grandad who was, and still is cut from the same cloth as Dibnah and these owd boys and I can honestly say so often I feel very alone as a young man with these "old fashioned" views and values...and yet they are the things I hold dearest to my heart and treasure every day that I'm no longer able to labour for the old fella and soak up all this character and experience! These guys are my heroes!

I'm from the early 50's and born in Stockport with similar values. It is very refreshing to read that you appreciate and respect these fantastic workmen. Please retain your stance and do not feel "very alone." I am confident that you will go on to enjoy meeting others who hold these treasured views and values.

I had the same experience here in NZ. I was in the very last school of apprentices who were taught the same work ethic and values as Fred. The last of the old school tradies. The young guys for the last 10-15 years, have been declining rapidly from what I've witnessed. And for the "educated ones" you might be able to construct and elegant sentence, but you forget that you wouldn't last a day on a building site. We all have our own unique set of skills, it doesn't make any one better than the other.

Hey guys yes it's very sad he's past ,I'd only seen one episode and that was laddering a chimney. As I saw more parts of the this beautiful and professional documents that have been presented to us , I sadly learnt of his passing but I haven't seen all of the episodes yet He died in 2004 but I don't know what from . As I watch all of the parts I should find out but there's so much on him to see, I'm watching thing's outta order though. He is a legend and professional with his work . I was annoyed to hear his property was ransacked. It's so sad that there's people out there that steal from the dead . R I P Fred .

I agree with you buddy some would quiver in there shoes working with him . Let alone doing anything'to help him . I would of loved working with him . I loved it, Fred was a great guy to work with, as you can tell he loved to talk, but he was so very interesting and would reminisce about his past, he’s say how engineers would have made such a thing and today, there’s hardly anyone else who could do anything similar, the doss houses he was talking about are on Bradford street in the Haulgh area. Bedsit land and it’s getting smaller and smaller, there’s still drug use and prostitution round there, not that it would ever affect Fred in Tonge fold graveyard behind the back of his old home. Fred Dibnah, a true gent that would do ‘owt for you. RIP Fred,

"Eee lad erti owreet , dustha wanna brew." I had forgotten the local dialect on a visit to Lancashire after 30 years overseas. Apparently this means "young man are you okay, would you like a cup of tea?" and "thaz pictup th'ozzie twang" means "you have an Australian accent" To me all the people from Lancashire sound like Fred. Lovely Genuine friendly people.
