Here's one DJ hasn't heard. MCA+ feels most people would not have heard this or this artist, however, does DJ feel this could be one of the greatest guitarists?

Even more amazing is WHO Phil is. The 3rd time we met he had me play some of my songs on his acoustic & even gave me one of his agent's biz cards (still have it). He was using an E-Bow during the "jam" This was recorded in some of his early days. He got even better, cleaner, faster, smoother, even more creative. And then he really started to shine as one of the top "finger style" acoustic guitar players. He has over 50 albums to his name, as well as recording lead tracks for many other artists' albums.

Glad he became a Christian musician in service to our Lord. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior after a Sunday evening service Phil Keaggy concert at Calvary Riverside (before changing the name to Harvest) back in 1981. Mr. Keaggy will always have a special place in my life for that reason.

@TheSlowoldman that's amazing, I received Christ in May 1982. I was already a guitarist before that so was looking for Christian alternatives to some of my heroes. Saw Phil at McFarlane Auditorium at SMU, I was totally blown away by his musical prowess but even more than that his love for the Lord. I later attended an autograph signing at a local Christian music store and waited in line to meet Phil and get him to sign my Keaggy songbook. The guy in front of me said to Phil "Hey Phil, I think we have a mutual friend". Phil replied "yes, Jesus". Really made an impression on me as a new believer.

Google this song, Time, from the How the West Was One album. His interplay with the keyboardist, Richard Souther, is unreal. Phil told me privately that that night was possibly his hottest night ever. Apparently, the chemistry of Richard and the band just took Phil to an even higher level. He told me this in 2017, some 40 years of playing later than that memorable night.

I've known Phil since 1970 and met him in NorthRidgeville,OH at Cirus Erie...Even talked to Phil down here in Florida in 2000. The music WORLD and severe music critics knows he's the best of the best...Believe me....

seen Keaggy many times, he is a gift to us all!! I remember seeing him performing solo acoustic at St Mary's College in South Bend IN, it was so beautiful, I know I forgot to breathe a bunch of times :) Those tapes you have are, I am sure, pure gold. Haven't heard anyone mention Sweet Comfort Band in a loooonnng time, what a great band that was. I need to dig that vinyl out and listen again. I followed SCB's guitarist Randy Thomas when he was in the group Allies after Duncan left to his solo career. Duncan.... what a voice. Anyways, thankls for your channel and introducing Keaggy to others. I once heard Wes King open up for Keaggy at Grace College in Winona Lake IN. When King's set was over and he brought Phil on stage, he said these words about Keaggy which I have always thought described him in the best way I have ever heard.... that he was a composer trapped in a guitar player's body!!! blessings to you and yours

Guys I have been a Phil Keaggy fan since the 70's. I know and love all the greats. Eric Johnson, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, etc. As far as I am concerned I can go back and listen to songs he did back in the 70's, 80's or current. In my humble opinion he's the best guitar player in the world bar none. Time is only one sliver of his greatness.

Thank you so much for reacting to Phil Keaggy!! He's been a favorite of mine since the early/mid 1970s. I have several of his albums, and I've seen him in concert probably a dozen times or so over the years, including once when he was with Glass Harp. Such a wonderful and gifted guitarist - and definitely in the top tier! I'm sure he was influenced by the Beatles, and he has spent time with Paul in the past. I've seen pictures of the 2 of them together. He has often played a Beatles song or 2 in the concerts of his that I've been to. If you search for "Phil Keaggy Paul McCartney", there are photos, videos and articles about the 2 of them together. Just a thought.... if you added something like "awesome guitarist" to the title of this video, maybe it might help bring more people to watch.

It really is such a shame more people don't know who he is! I saw a TV special he did back in 1996 when I was a kid, and its what made me want to learn how to play guitar. When I was 17 I finally got my own looping pedal, and while I could never hold a candle to his skill, he was a MASSIVE influence on me.

I almost bought that 71 Les Paul from Phil in 1987 after I played with him in Costa Mesa,Ca. I was late on my rent & didn’t buy it. Should’ve slept in my car with the Les Paul! lol That’s an E-bow by the way that he’s using to get the feed back. Also-Phil lost his finger from a water pump falling on it as a kid. Philly is still my favorite player! I’ve been friends with him 40 years now. He’s such a great brother!

That "silver thing" is called an "E-bow", battery operated that generates a field around the string and causes it to vibrate. And, he lost his finger in an accident with an old fashioned hand pump when he was 5 or 6years old.

11:39 - That 'thing on the strings' is an E-bow. It uses an alternating magnetic field to keep the strings going into an endless sustain. British guitaris Paul Bielatowicz also uses it.

The electronic bow - called an "ebow" - is still available on Amazon. Phil became a born-again Christian during his time with Glass Harp. Before he accepted Jesus, he was on drugs and got frustrated with his fingers, "not working right." In his intoxication, he cut the finger off. When he sobered up, it was too late to reattach that finger. Despite his amazing skill, he's also partly disabled.

Phil has worked hard to be the best he can be to use his talent that the Lord gave him. Yes he is a guitar legend. But my guess is he would want all of his fans and those who have heard of him to know that the true legend is Jesus Christ who died for our sins and satisfied the wrath of God and who now invites us to have a relationship with Him by receiving the gift of salvation. Thanks Phil for never compromising the message.
