With you on that, I use to work in a noisy factory in my late teens for 4 years, which damaged my ears so then had to wear hearing aids from aged 22 (now 60) and they made my life hell on earth at how much noise is out there. (Love my new aids they have noise canceling built in for screeching brats in shopping malls) 😹😹 for the first time in years it felt like I had my normal hearing back my friend who fitted me for these new aids laughed at my reaction to the noise once we left the her office(sound proofed) 😹😹do I wear my hearings more now, 😹😹you bet I do. At least when the noise starts getting to me I can just unplug unlike those with great hearing so there is the upside to hearing loss 😹 I love Charlie’s version of this dress but the um modest part of me would have left the front um a little less low cut😹😹but Charlie looked great in her own design

​@@dawsie I was always very protective of my hearing because my father and his brother were both deaf almost by machinery in the 1930s and '40s. I even wore earplugs when I worked at call centers because they got so noisy. I had my hearing checked when I was 40 and the technician was very surprised at how much I could hear from my age. Also it turns out I have ADHD in autism lol so I'm super sensitive to noise which is part of the reason why I was wearing ear plugs not just to protect my hearing. I almost always have a pair in my car and I'm a native Floridian so I'm happy that they can sit in hot vehicles for so long lol I usually kept more than one pair in case friends needed them. Pro tip it's also a good way to make friends at a concert.

SAME. I spent half of my 20s in most military airplane, then most of my 30s secluded while raising two kids. Not only has my tolerance for repetitive noise gotten microscopic, but my tolerance for loud areas (concerts, indoor water park, amusement park, etc) has also diminished to the point that I no longer enjoy them. :(

If you dont feel like felling the seams or top stitching the seams down. You can use a rolled hem foot for the seems instead of a flat foot. It makes the seam thinner so less likely to show. I also think this would be stunning if you put a few crystals on the mesh parts. Just a handful on each panel for a slight sparkle.

And fear of cutting is a LEGITIMATE thing! I took HOURS yesterday to figure out how to cut a circle skirt out of quilting cotton. (Yes, I know Mood's calculator and was referencing it.) Hours. There might (was) paper involved to make sure I wasn't screwing it up. I needed 1.5 years of fabric, have *5* yards in my possession, and was still paralyzed. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I did that for my child for Halloween.... scared to cut it, because I bought all they had and had to figure out how many quarter circle panels I could get at kid's requested length to make it as full as possible. (Then sewed on bias tape about 6" from the edge, and it took almost two whole packages!)

I’ve been wanting to work on making my own wardrobe and this video really helped me with some of the overwhelm thats stopping me from doing that. I’ve watched many of your videos and the fact that you have made so many different pieces using this one pattern as the base really makes a full wardrobe project seem reasonable. At this point I feel like if I start making a few pieces just to see what I like once I’ve found one or two patterns that I enjoy the rest will be “easy”.

Very true, you can never go wrong with the pattern Charlie is using, because of the raglan sleeves it lends itself to being sleeveless with great results, plus a Princess cut dress is the best choice, I have one with raglan sleeves an one with standard inserted sleeves. Both are great for creating your own style. Once you have made it as per instructed it gives you so many ideas on what and how you use them for your own ideas. Most dresses are based from the basic design. If you sit and go through a pattern book you will see how they all are just based on this one pattern block. I learnt this when I did my collage course on pattern drafting. Once you have a pattern block base that fits you like a glove you can do anything with the pattern. You should watch the “Closet Historian” she works from only one basic pattern block drafted to her personal size and from that she can change it to be a darted out fit or a princess seamed at the arm hole area or from the shoulder all depending on how she wants her outfits to look. She has made modern outfits to historical outfits all from her one basic block pattern.

Same here with loud noises, in Basic training, we had KP duty out in the field, and i was in charge of laying out bread. All of a sudden, the soldier next to me started banging the ladle on the metal top of the container in front of him. Without even thinking, I backhanded him in the chest. When I looked up at him, it wasn't the same soldier that started there. It was a Drill Sergeant. My eyes got big as saucers, mouth hit the floor, I started profusely apologizing, and he just pointed to the ground. My platoon drill sergeants walked up wanting bread and asked who was doing push ups since they knew our platoon was in charge that day, and I identified myself while continuing the push ups. Not to toot my horn, but I was a very good soldier, so they were shocked when he told them I hit him. Later, I explained, and nothing more happened, and years later, as we ran into each other, we all laughed, but I learned loud noises are serious triggers for me.

Another way to do the mesh cutout might be to stich the mesh on before cutting the other fabric off. It's what Bernadette Banner did for her lacy dress. Might make it a little less stressful.

❤ that’s a really versatile pattern❤. As much as you use it, I would suggest fusing a thin iron on interfacing to the back of it. Interfacing really extends the life of a tissue pattern. Yes, it costs more than just buying a new one on sale but tissue patterns backed with interfacing are so nice to use that it’s worth it for favorites. I actually save every tiny interfacing scrap and put them on the backs of my favorite patterns crazy quilt style. If I don’t have enough to cover the whole thing, I start by fusing scraps to the areas I pin as it keeps the tissue from being damaged by the pins.

I'm at 16:20 and I totally see what you mean! The dress is beautiful so far! And most evening gowns tend to look more formal without sleeves. If you do sleeves, they usually have to be purposefully loose and shaped, like butterfly or fluttery or something. OR they must be very well fitted. Any inbetween tends to look casual. If you hadn't/didn't cut out the neckline, I think a mesh cap sleeve that goes into a V-shape mesh back would look gorgeous! Pro-tip for static. Hand wash, then toss it in the dryer on a low heat gentle cycle with a fabric softener dryer sheet. It won't have static when it comes out. Love that you finished the dress without sleeves, then made a matching bolero! Now you can mix and match the pieces! Fun, comfy, and formal! What's not to love?

That dress is a-ma-zing!!! It fits you perfectly! Mat must have felt 10 feet tall having you on by his side 😊 Nice suit too btw 😉 Best of all you were comfortable, which is priceless. I hear you on noise and seasonal depression! I am in Belgium so really far north and our winter days are so short! Plus it's a rainy climate so it's overcast most days, no snow to amplify the sunlight and rain almost every day... 😟 December was a nightmare for me this year; I live in a row house which means I have neighbours attached on both side. The house next door sold in the fall and the new neighbours are having major renovations done before they move in. We have 100% brick construction inside and out, wood-framed partition walls don't exist; it's all plaster over solid brick. 3 weeks of jackhammer sounds, and vibrations, from 7:30 to 18:00, 6 days a week!!! Some days I would wake up to them working on the wall against my bed's headboard 😳 I had to wear earplugs daily to stay sane! My poor pup got cotton balls stuffed in his ears and wore a Happy Hoody snood to keep them in place. It was rough! Thankfully they are almost finished now and there's a lot less noise.

Hey! Teacher here. I have several students who get really overstimulated by sound. They wear headphones to cut down on the volume of the noise. You may have already thought about or tried this, but I've seen it totally change a student's ability to cope with classroom stress, so I wanted to mention it. Thanks for a great video!

I have hyperacusis and I relate to what you describe. The wind howling always seems like it’s screaming at me, it’s difficult to handle. If you need tools to handle noise, you can get special earplugs that filter the sound and take the edge off. It doesn’t warp them of make it difficult to have a conversation, they’re almost invisible when worn, and it can change your life. For me they don’t do enough for extreme situations but they help, and I also have noise blocking earmuffs and earplugs. There are several brands, my friends use Loop (they have different models) and I use the Alpine Music Safe. There are others but I didn’t try them. Great video, I love both dresses (the one you made and the one you wear !)

A couple of years back, I was living with my ex on the 16th floor of a skyscraper in Tokyo. One night I was home alone and the wind was absolutely insane. It felt like there was a group of people in each room of the flat just shrieking at the top of their lungs, it was so unbelievably loud. I couldn't sleep all night and honestly considered moving into the garbage room or something just to escape it. I think I still have ptsd from it. I feel your pain. The dress is gorgeous! I'm getting ready to start on a dress for the opening night of the opera... which is black tie, my escort will be in tails, I'm terrified but I think the mockup will be essential... I'm using a vintage gunne sax pattern, the one Rachel Maksy uses the skirt of. And I am doing the same it's a formal dress but the bodice will be a vintage 1940s pinafore that is double breasted. My plan is to make the bodice look like a tuxedo and wear a tuxedo shirt under and a bow tie, I'm working on the cummerbund problem at the moment, and by working I mean I'm ignoring it because you won't see my shirt tucked in. 😮 15:08 pretty 😍

13:43 you’re speaking on how even the wind has begun to over stimulate you. I’m 28, I have ADHD and low grade autism and I very well understand this feeling of overwhelmed and anxiety. In the past few years I’ve discovered “loops” they are a special type of ear plug with varying decibel ranges for noise clanclation. I’ve found them immensely helpful for allowing me to participate in the day to day without allowing overstimulation. Just something you might wanna give a try. They have allowed me so much freedom and the ability to participate in so many more events and activities that I previously would’ve been incapable.

Oh the noise… I love natural noises, but we just moved out of a large apartment complex, where our upstairs neighbors were running, or dropping things, or walking “stoutly,” I don’t know… but ARGH! I'm curious if you've ever visited any of the discount outlets in the fabric district in LA? I've seen other creatives do so on their channels and wonder if it might be a bit more economical than a regular retailer... The wind does do weird things to us! I used to manage a pre-school (kindergarten) and the kids were always a nightmare when it was really windy! We were in rural, highlands of Scotland - it happened a LOT! 😖😂😂😂

This is actually the second time I’m watching this because I was cooking my pups their breakfast as this was playing and I missed the assembly… your videos are fun to watch… I am an experienced seamstress but I love how you just dive into your projects with no hesitation 😂 I’m from the old school so a lot of times my creativity can be restricted by perfection… and mesh… yikes… you’re brave … but truly, I love the gown you did an amazing job…you do know you’ll need to learn to make corsets especially for the designs you love to make… they are easy to make 😃 but time to watch the video before I miss it again 😂

French seams are gold when it comes to mesh. The smaller the better. You can use zipper feet or cording feet to get closer, I've heard.

Nicely done!! Headaches could be wind. I never grew up in this area that has Chinook winters but moved here in my early 30's, I'm now late 50's and FINALLY my headaches/migraines from the wind are much better. Usually a quick drop in barometric pressure is what does it.

I get the noise thing. I have 4 kids, ages 5 and down. Ear plugs or headphones without music on have really helped me. And dang it, I declare this is the year I actually use that McCalls pattern. I have a summer dress cut out but now I need an evening dress.

So pretty! What a great job. My three oldest daughters also struggle with loud noises because their father was verbally abusive to them when they were children. I come from one of those loud boisterous happy families you mentioned, and sometimes when we get together it can be rough for my girls. (They are in their 20s and 30s now.)

WOW! THAT IS GORGEOUS!! I love that this pattern is so versatile! It's magical!! Oh, yeah, WIND. Don't move to Colorado. Here in Southern Colorado, we have 6 weeks of wind in the spring. Not breezes. WIND. 30 MPH at its slowest, predictably from 10 AM to 10 PM. We have the highest self- un-aliving rate in the nation at that time. They (scientists , doctors, politicians) used to speculate that it was either cabin fever or a change in people's ions that caused the spike in un-alivement. I think it's just the constant hell of the wind for twelve hours a day. And when we get a stretch of wind at night -- yeah, not good.

It was very windy the last days here too and i totally get it. The constant noise can make you feel so on edge all the time. Together with nye festivities it was very mentally draining and I‘m relieved that at least the fireworks noise is gone.
