I have an "out of the blue" suggestion about the studio door. Measure it out and the doorframe and see if turning the door upside down would fix the "not fitting" problem. This is, of course, assuming a great many things. But, thought it might be worth a try.

When I was in trade school, my carpentry teacher told us to never play with the tape measure (pulling on it and letting it snap back in), because it could break and hit you in the eyeball, and one of my classmates did it anyway, and it broke and hit him in the eyeball.

After many years doing diy carpentry, to keep the shelves from sagging (it will 100% unless you used a hard wood like oak or thick plywood) put a scrap piece of wood you used for trim along the seem joining the two shelves together drill short screws down, then run another 2x3 along the front of the shelves. Wish I could jump through the tv and help you or send you a drawing cuz I’m horrible at explaining. In the other closet again run a 2x3 along the front. You could also make a triangle piece for the middle for support. Not my intention to be annoying because I think you are awesome and You make my heart happy 😊 I can build or fix anything but my sewing? horrific

I have a large stash of Fabric. It started with getting part of an auction lot. My Friend didn't want the fabric so I took all of it. I really wanted to learn to sew but fear can paralyze. So for years I just collected fabric afraid to sew anything or cut for that matter. I heard someone say that fabric hording is different than being a sewist. I was mortified I saw myself as a sewist. So....I started sewing and it's working. I still collect Fabric anytime I can. But now I sew. Totes, Diaper bags, Lego bags, forte for a card table for small children, Mending bought clothing, hemming pants. Etc. Next hurdle to overcome is sewing my own clothes. Starting this fall. We moved in May 2024 and I am just getting my craft room together and organized. Much harder with huge quantities of fabric. Then I will start my next journey. Love your videos. If we lived closer I could see us hanging out. Love the humor and just your personality. Our styles are very very different, but who cares. I figure if you can wing it so can I. Thanks for the confidence. Have a great day and please keep the content coming. It's my entertainment for the day. Love it.

I feel your fascination with fabric. I started w curtains and skirts....now my hurdle is shirts. They terrify me. I always end up with wonky shoulder bits. At least we are using all that wonderful fabric. Keep up the sewing, hope you have a great time.🎉
@michellebyrom65514 ай бұрын
@@potatoflakes247wonky shoulders, along sleeve seams I'm guessing? Using pins perpendicular to the seam, not along its line, helps. You use a lot more pins but that gives more flexibility and you don't have to remove them until after the seam is sewn. Being careful to match the edges as you pin then following a set distance from the edge. I judge it by the presser foot. From the needle sideways to just under the foot for the first pass on a French seam. From the needle to the outside of the foot on the second pass of a French seam, or the allowance for a narrow seam on lingerie say. A tad beyond the outside of the foot gives a standard seaplane that can then be serged/zigzag stitched to finish. There is ease in woven fabrics that can't be found in wood and metal. Really useful when fitting opposite curves together. Hold the seam as you sew both in front of and behind the presser foot. Stretch it just enough to make both layers equal, without distortion or running faster than the stitching - the latter will cause longer or skipped stitches. Remember how sewing a straight line at speed was a challenge to start with? You'll get the hang of manipulating fabric as you go too. Gathered sleeves with wonky seams tend to come from uneven edges when pinning. Long basting stitches to hold the seam without pins then sewing the regular seam makes it more pliable and easier to do. You can hide the basting by sewing it within the seam allowance. I hope this helps. Learned the hard way myself, just like everyone else.

I organize my stuff the same way. Never understood people who organize by color first. If I want to sew a t-shirt, I need a knit, so I want to know where my knits are. I can see the colors with one glance a the pile of knits, this only takes a second. But to feel or test what is stretchy takes much longer. So of course I sort by type of fabric first. I don't sort the apps on my phone by color, either. I keep similar apps together like e-books or music or social media. Plus the icons sometimes have a different color after an update.

I have a very small income, and buy everything I need on an online second hand market, for a nice price. Maybe, if you have too much, you could make one like me happy with it. But be careful, there are some people out there that try to con you, just saying if you have no experiance on such a market, and don't know what to look out for. That depends on where you live, but you should be able to find warnings on KZbin or somewhere about that. I honestly would not have any hobbies without people like those that sell on there. Most are awesome people, I don't mean to scare you away from it, just saying be aware that there is scumbags everywhere nowadays.
@shadowfall95614 ай бұрын
@@JackyHeijmans :) I went looking the other day - just to see if there was anything suitable local to me or even where I could donate at a distance. Some of my mother's materials I will never use as they are not my style. Sadly - there is one place in another state which deals in textiles as their main second hand focus - and one place in a city a couple of hundred km away that deals in 'art and craft supplies' that includes textiles. I also ran across a lady who deals in tablecloths and doilies and other linens rather than fabric. She is up-country about 250km away as well, assuming she was interested in taking on fabric. I could (and have) donated to local thrift shops but I am not sure that what I donate is actually getting to people, like yourself, who would want it! So I am holding off doing a major sort of what I have - but that will have to change soon. Unfortunately, fabric is heavy so posting a lot overseas is not really an option from a cost point of view.

There is something quite thrilling about an organized fabric stash! I am part of a few scrappy quilt fb groups. There is always a post on there about "I have so much!" and I have multiples of what is pictured, or someone asking "how can I store this totally reasonable amount?" and they are shamed for how much they have. In a scrappy group! grow up ppl!! I remember thinking I had a lot of scraps when I had 6 shoe boxes full. Now I have about 20 12x12in bins absolutely stuffed. And still more in trash bags that need sorting. That's not including pieces 1/4yd or larger. I do not care what anyone thinks about how much I have. I know that most quilters would throw most of what I keep away. I find the small scraps the most useful, so that is what I keep. And I have actually bought very little. Most of it was given to me, because, as I said, most quilters would have thrown it away, so they give it to me instead.

Fabric organization is important, even for my ADHD brain! I love the bright colors in the closet. It's a nice burst of happy. About 5 years ago, I decided I needed to organize my quilting fabrics. Problem is, I regularly pull out 10-15 different fabrics to audition for a quilt, and putting them back is... not a strong suit. Cutting out a new quilt is WAY more exciting than putting things away. Also, all that handling means no matter how well I try to handle things, they'll come unfolded. And once I pick things, I may need to unfold things anyway to see how much I actually have. And refolding, almost as boring as putting things away. To make the whole quilt-planning process easier, I measured all yardage, folded all pieces of fabric 1 yard or longer in half lengthwise, then wrapped it around a 6" x 24" quilting ruler. The end was secured with a straight pin, then pinned a small scrap of paper with the yardage written on it to the top. Now, I can grab folded fabrics, literally toss them across the room without them unfolding, and know before I start working whether I have enough of that particular fabric without having to unfold anything. I have these fabric flats arranged on shelves by color, since that's the way I normally "shop" my stash. The flats take me about 30 seconds to do, so if I remember to do it when I get back from the fabric store, I can keep up with it easily. If I don't get things put away right after planning, they're pretty stable and can safely sit in a stack on my sewing table (or in the corner, or the spare chair, or...) safely until I am ready to put them back in the closet.

Sheet storing tip. Put folded sheets and one pillowcase into the other pillowcase so the set stays together. I like to turn the "bag" pillowcase inside out and then once filled fold it in half and use the folded bit sewn into the pillowcase as a lid to hold it all together in a little square. I'm not sure if that description makes heaps of sense but hopefully it helps someone keep their sets together.

I got a big black bag of fabric for free that someone was giving away. I used most of it and still have loads left. I also got a big bag of bed sheets and covers my friend gave me so im using them to make dresses and laundry bags. I dont have a huge amount but still have more than most people.

Oh you could have organized your fabrics by the color of the shelf!! ( well that would work for me as I mainly have 100% cotton and Linen for quilting, not garment fabrics lol) Love your idea of redoing the closet into better storage. I REALLY need to do that too lol

This is so inspiring!! My crafting supplies are ALL in need of reorganization, which seems so overwhelming. One bit at a time, one step at a time. Over and over, in manageable segments. Seems doable. :) Thank you!

I love how delightfully surrounded you are by fabric in the organizing and storing stage! Like you’re swimming in it 😍😍 (I have limited space to store and keep fabric atm so this is the dream!)

I love the colors inside the closet. Very envious of your fabric stash. Lol I do think you should have shown the now empty guest room...ultimately you have now decorated two rooms for the price of finishing your closet! Thank yoi for explaining about organizing is personal...having adhd, how I think about things is very different from other...especially family members in the same home!

Dude! Cool sticks! I like how you utilized the closets and learned to break up a big project into steps.
