The vocabulary feels like one of the most isolating parts of teaching oneself to sew - I learn a lot by doing what I'm doing but either I don't know that it has a name or I know a different name than what they use in my part of the world. Also, as a crocheter, slip stitch ALSO means something different to my brain!

The mark up is for the random people who waltz in. Also, no, it's not a profit. Just like the $.25 spiral notebook sale at school time, stores lose money on those but they make money with the other supplies. You lose marginal money on selling patterns, but chances are those same seamstresses will be back and buy fabric at that store, so it's a total net gain.
@gettheetothestitchery

That's an excellent point - it does all start with the pattern, and since you can reuse them over and over but always have to buy new fabric, I guess they make up the loss big time!

The term I usually hear for that kind of pricing on products that are well liked by consumers but at a weirdly low price is "Loss Leaders"

Same thing as printers. They make a loss on the printer to make a gain on the overpriced ink

To get more folds out of your fabric you can fold the selvages in towards the centre the width of your pattern piece rather than folding it in half, if you’re lucky you can get two pieces cut on the fold then if that makes sense? Look up frugal fabric cutting or something like that and I’m sure that seeing it would make more sense than my explanation of it lol. I love the avocado colour, it’s one of my faves and looks great on you and props for being so brave!

my hubby worked at the local 'higher end' men's clothing store for a few months...he now knows that clothing can be marked up past 200% - their 'sale' and 'clearance' was still 50-75% marked up, so they were still making a good profit off of clearance. I now shop sale and clearance whenever I can and leave regular prices for something I need at that exact moment.

I recently scored a sewing machine from a thrift store for $30 and I cannot wait to go on this journey with you as you make all the things! If you are looking for video concepts, I have always found picking out the fabric to be the most daunting part of it all and would love your insight on what works or doesn't when making things. P.s Your sister just gained a new sub ;)

Don't get me on the beauty, usefulness and general perfection of trees ....and their murderers. It is NOT fine.

I love trees too, bought the house on the beautifully shaded lot, etc. Sadly, since I’ve lived here I’ve had to remove 13 of them at great personal expense. Windstorms, ice storms (not in a frozen climate at all), termites, accumulated damage from years of drought. Gradually falling over and menacing the neighbors. I thought people who compulsively cut trees near the house were paranoid or stupid until one fell on my house, breaking the roof and also windows on the complete other side. I would have cut down a lot of trees before moving in today, had I known. Some times they gotta go.

"Not stretchy seam" Many home sewingmashines have an elastic stitch option. Some use +S.S.- as a sign for it where you usually put in the length of the stitch. That makes the mashine sew back and forth having more thread available for the fabric to then stretch in that direction a bit still. For future reference.

Yes, this. I was trying to find this comment. Also, stretch stitch kinda looks like a lightning bolt but I have also used a zigzag stitch but it does not work as well.

I absolutely appreciate your attention to detail with calling it "JoAnn" instead of "JoAnn's." Is it a super pedantic distinction for me to care about? Yes. But it gives me joy nonetheless :D

I love your videos. This is the first Ike I’ve seen a video from this far back. You give me so many ideas, but you are also enjoyable to listen to and relatable. I think it’s because you are very much yourself. It’s like hanging out with my friends vibes. Anyway, also wanted to say: 💚 dark green like the top in the beginning is your color.

I wonder if you could have changed the position of the fold in the fabric and had less wastage. So have the fold 10 or 12 inches in (or whatever works) rather than half way. Just a thought.

If there wasn't a nap to the fabric (one direction darker the other way lighter) could have folded the fabric into 3rds and cut top with bottom of other piece starting at top of first piece. Not sure if fabric wide enough

No one would be looking down at me from any tree unless I was in my livingroom or dining room and they had binoculars. With that I would fe calling the police. As for the rest, privacy static film is a great invention. I have it on the windows of my bedroom and 2 guest bedrooms (one is a sewing/ painting room). I also have it on both bathroom shower doors (no windows in either bathroom). Light still goes through and if you can find the lacey design in TEMU it is not off putting like some crazy designs and looks as if it was a lace curtain that was deliberately put there. I am also bad with the correct terminologies of things I know how to do. Especially, with ones that changed. Took me forever to learn that making a computer program was no longer called programming but called coding. Took me a few years. So do not feel bad. I always have been terminology inadequate. 😂

It looks great on you! And I know you said that the fabric's got its quirks re showing everything that's underneath, but I wonder if, on the other hand, the stretchiness made it easier for it to end up a perfect fit (not to impugn your sewing skills or the pattern, but you did say that you were kind of in between two of the sizes).
@gettheetothestitchery
@gettheetothestitchery 2 жыл бұрын
Oh impugn away, cause I don't think I currently qualify as having any sewing skills, and the fitting is always the worst part! XD The stretchiness definitely saved my butt here, which is why I absolutely love knit!

I used to like sewing clothes as a teen, when I didn't feel like having very fitted stuff. Then I realised fitted is the thing for me... And the ready-made patterns don't fit me at all as-is. The need complex changes. Pretty much stopped sewing clothes at that point. Except skirts.

Okay, listen (oh hai it's me again I'm totally not stalking you), everyone calls it JoAnn's just like everyone says ALDI's even though there's no S on the end of that, either. EVERYONE. Do I sometimes say "the Walmarts" or "the Targets" for my own amusement (and the annoyance of my sister)? Look, don't bring complicating factors into this. Pfff.

They discount so they don't have to count as inventory before tax time. At our Joanne's I made friends with one of the ladies that works there. So she let's me know when they have sales on what she knows l pretty much buy there. Then there is a gay guy is friendly too that when then sewing table l was waiting to come on sale also gave me his employee discount on top of the sale price. So l only had to pay 1/3 the price when all discounts where added. L lucked out that day.
