I like really organic tones with a little fuzz or crunch. The best I've gotten was by putting the Fuzz Pedal at it's lowest Distortion, then the Tone Pedal, then the "Sweet" Amp, and then Axpress to compress it and give it a punch. I realized that if I put the compressor at the beginning (the way you would on a physical pedalboard) then it kills the dynamics and makes the distortion/crunch sound fake. But putting it at the end allowed it to feel more real. Then to top it off, the thing that made ALL the difference, was throwing the Waves J37 tape plugin after it to add some really nice, analog-y saturation. And That tape plugin REALLY did the trick because it distorts dynamics in a much more realistic way than GTR. My problem with GTR is that... 1. The Amps are just weak. The Drive adds distortion. But even then, the amps don't really sound alive. You kinda need to use Axpress on everything to make up for it. I'd like the amp simulation just to sound a little thicker.. But perhaps I'm thinking too much like a guitarist.. This may be a decided feature so that a Mixer can have more control over the compression and dynamics of a guitar in a mix. 2. Getting a subtle, dynamic crunch response is difficult. Distortion is either present or not. You can control how present it is, but it doesn't really respond to your playing in a realistic way when you just want a little bit of crunch. I'm a blues player, so this is important. Waves J37 is way better at dynamics.. So when I use that in combination with GTR, it seems to do the trick. I do look forward to whenever they update GTR. It's been a while and Amp-sim technology has advanced. And I hope they make some Amp models that realistically mimic real amps - or are at least labeled in such a way that you know what they are trying to imitate. Fender, Vox, and Marshall are like the golden 3 you gotta nail.

Great bang for your buck. In my opinion BEST guitar plugin out there. It doesn't get the spotlight other guitar plugins get, strangely, and I honestly feel it blows them all away. They all sound cheesey, thin and fake. I have released 4 albums with recorded Marshalls and Orange amps that were reviewed by Guitar Player magazine who praised my tones and I would honestly drop keeper tracks with this plugin and do plan to do so. NO I do not work for waves, I just have to commend WAVES on a job well done. Amazing what you can do nowadays.

Jesus, this blows my POD HD 500x out of the stratosphere. I really need to pick this up. The tones you're getting with this plugin by just messing around are astounding. I'm imagining some post-processing on that track to make it nice and tight... Damn... Nice playing, too!

Nice sound...have the same GTR3.. ..Guitar connected to 535Q wah, then into .A/B switch (powered) "A" boss BCB custom board "B" Boss ME 80...Through Jamman phrase/looper/sampler then to EURORACK mixer ,then to computer input,VST host using ASIO works great.!!!...

Great Video. Very Helpful! I'm trying to use this plugin from within Sonar X3 and am finding it a bit challenging to hear the affected signal. I'm using the input echo on the track, but still can barely hear the affected signal. You've got a good guitar sound and it;s evident that you know what you like to hear and can tweak your way towards that.

Actually Waves GTR with Cubase 5 and presets or Amplitube/Clean or Hendrix's sounds better to ME, better than BIAS FX OR GUITAR RIG, more realistic and warmin sound in my ear, cheers fome Chile !

This is the best setting for 80's rock guitar. Period. For other sound styles there are better vst's, some free.

Very good video, clap clap clap!!! I wonder if you could do a video on heavy metal pedal confgurations with Fuzz etc..If it's not too much to ask. Maybe try to get some similar tone to Metal bands guitar tone like Black Sabbath, Sleep, and doom and sludge type bands. I would greatly appreciate it.

Double the track and use a clean amp around in the second track. Don't be afraid to have it a little metallic. Then blend to taste. 🤔

i probably should have watched this while actually using the vst. I'm neve r able to get good heavy distortion out of this program but amplitube is pretty good for heavy stuff. although waves seems to hav better sound fx

Sounds good - my only question is, and hopefully someone can answer: Before you even bring up the GTR3 plugins, is it better to go guitar direct , through a real amp, or? See these videos only give you the sound of the plugin, but not what they use to drive the guitar sound INTO the plugin before the computer is even used. Anyone have an answer? I try to go direct into my interface with my guitar, but the GTR3 sounds like total crap. So i'm thinking these guys are probably using real amps and then just using the GTR3 to add onto that. Anyway, any responses are appreciated. Thanks

+Rafael Nunez You are doing it right. Go into your interface preamp. A clean signal is what you need NOT a guitar amp in the front. Understand, you are going to have to take sometime and mess with it. Initially I thought the same, didn't sound that great, but after taking time, different cabinet and microphone combos I got a sound that I am actually considering going to album with. My last album was written up in GUITAR MAGAZINE and they praised my tone which was recorded with a Orange amp, but I've really been diggin my latest tones while tracking with GTR. Problem with most plugins for guitar is that you have to take your guitar, pickups and playing into consideration they all effect your sound. Out of the box I've never heard one plugin that worked for me. Best guitar plugin I've heard yet in my opinion. Hope this helps!

When I connect my guitar, I can only connect it to the sound card with directly a jack cable of course. So i connect it as mono. How can I get the signal in both amps ? When i play it through the Wave Gtr, only the left one works, in the amp from the right it is not anything.

Effectively, it is an insert. His chain is GUITAR->INTERFACE->GTR IN (track)->BUS 3->MASTER OUT. The 'GTR In' track's output is totally routed to 'Bus 3' and not via a send. Engineers do this to control the level being fed into the plugin using a fader without adjusting the gain anywhere else. It's common for mixers to route a mix to a 'Pre Master' which, in turn, feeds the main master. This way you can lower, or increase, the way the mix hits compressors on the main mix buss. You know how everything gets louder as you go... In other words, while this is indeed an auxiliary routing, it's a serial routing and not a parallel one. Check 0:33 of the video to confirm and notice how his 'Guitar In' track is pulled down slightly relative to the 'Bus 3' one on which this plugin is instantiated.

Hello, I am new to this game, so please forgive the question. Besides a guitar, instrument cable, and a Desktop PC, what other equipment is needed to use this software? Are the features listed above available for the $49 version, or are the upgrades necessary to get all the effects listed. I'm also using Cubase... I've found that using a guitar with hotter pickups (or humbuckers) should drive the sound in a similar way to the video. I use an Epiphone Les Paul Special II and it has humbuckers. My interface is similar to Focusrite as well! You shouldn't need much to get a great sound out of Waves GTR!

I would suggest mr. Bill Leverty is abusing distortion here. Considering there are two amps, together with the distortion in the OD-pedal... I'm convinced it would sond way better if he, say, backed down the gain on the pedal to just above zero.
