Thank you so much for this very informative video!! This may be a really silly question, but upon completing this course, would you become a certified professional Interior Designer? I’m guess I’m just confused and I don’t really know where to start on the actual process of going back to school (I’m 25 & mom of two) and actually becoming certified through online courses.
@iamloved
@iamloved Жыл бұрын
Hey! It all depends on the regulating body in your province/state. Some places require a degree, other places don’t. In Ontario, you cannot officially call yourself and “Interior Designer” unless you’ve been certified by the overseeing body. But that certification isn’t required to start an interior design business, get in trades programs, etc. I hope that helps!

I’m trying to figure out what exactly it is one receives after completing the course that couldn’t be acquired for free via independent research. I’m imagining that the only difference would be the acquisition of some sort of certification. Question based from that: how seriously would their particular certification be considered, out in the real world, as in would it be a benefit or hindrance when seeking clientele of a more … shall we say, prestigious type?
@iamloved
@iamloved Жыл бұрын
That's a great question. Upon successful completion you receive a Diploma in Interior Design. It is recognized under a whole slew of design associations. To become accredited where I live as an official "Interior Designer" one has to apply, provide samples of work, work under a tutor for a number of years, pay a fee and pass exams in order to qualify. This process is more challenging if you only have a diploma versus a degree. It depends on if this specific accreditation is desired by you and your clients or not. To answer your question about clientele of a prestigious type, it would seem that a significant part of attracting certain clients is the designer's skill and portfolio. Some of the top, world-famous designers today never studied formally. If one has the time, resources and ability to study formally and get their degree and pursue accreditation, then that would be a great route to take! For those of us who don't have the means, getting a Diploma in Interior Design is a great option. But I would say do research regarding the accreditation requirements where you live before you decide which route is right for you. Hope this helps! All the best!

Hi! Thanks for the videos on IDI! I think I’m going to go ahead and pursue this BUT big question: Does this give you the tools or teach you how to use programs to present “rooms” or “look boards” to clients? I always see people sharing a picture and they have “room boards” set up.. with items to present to clients. I do not know how to do this. Do they happen to teach this to you? Specifically what “programs” to they teach you? Is this something you can carry over after you graduate? Thank you!!! ❤

I'm confused why you say they offer this, maybe you mean something else and sometime has passed since this post but I had to jump on and ask because my experience when I was taking the one year diploma course is they do not teach you how to actually create a mood board , they tell you where you can go to sign up for eg, canva and you are on your own to figure out how to use canva and pay for the subscription if you choose the pro version.

Hi there, not sure if you went ahead but I did reply below as well to say in the diploma course they do not teach you how to create a mood board like one does on Canva, you are on your own to figure out that, as I learned myself when I was taking the course. Good luck!

In order to become an interior designer in Canada, you need to have a degree in interior design from a program that meets the requirements set forth by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. According to the Interior Designers of Canada. The Interior Design Institute diploma course is a step in that process. There are other steps necessary to be able to officially call yourself an interior designer. Check out the CIDA website for more details.

@@minza3984 Sketching can be really beneficial to provide a visual to clients on the spot. Many people won't be able to envision something that's explained to them, so that's where sketching would be of great value. This course teaches other ways to visually communicate with clients. For communicating with contractors and trades, CAD of some sort is the industry standard. There are some great-looking "sketching for beginners" classes online that could be a great addition to the training received at The Interior Design Institute.

It all depends on how in-depth the assignment is. I typically read the module content over an hour or two. Then I re-read the portions that affect the assignment. The assignments can take anywhere from 4-15 hours to complete if you have no previous experience using CAD programs or don't know how to draw by hand. They promote it as being done in 6 months. I just submitted the 11th assignment today (yay!), and have one more to go before I'm finished. All in all it will have taken me 7-8 months to complete it. Does this help?

Hey there! I'm in Canada as well - in Ontario. Interior Design is a non-regulated industry here, however you can apply to be part of the organization that officially allows you to use the title "interior designer" using the credentials from The Interior Design Institute. There are other criteria people must meet before applying including number of hours worked, signed off by an interior designer or architect, a portfolio of work, etc..
