i think knowing a user coin has a reputation - for example, any rafer or knots coin or the next cab soon coin - is enough for people to try going for it, but otherwise, a coin has to be basically free for me to even attempt the coin route. because its just not worth the effort when a coin route implements a chokepoint and generally makes the level less fun. so paradoxically, a supposedly terrible coin known for being terrible can often be more compelling than a just ok or even a good coin. imo

I personally kind of like the first coin in Serpent's Wrath. Obviously for many it won't be worth it, but if you do go for it you get to showoff the coin on the leaderboard against your friends showing that you did something substantially harder as a small little achievement visible to others directly within the game. Also generally I think just having multiple options of difficulty is kinda cool as someone who tends to already find extremes more fun since I just prefer that level of challenge. You can make the level fit your own needs in that way. Good video overall, I enjoyed it

I disagree with your opinion of changing the serpents wrath coin to a choice between two final bosses. At the time the level was made, the randomness was it’s niche and most interesting gimmick besides the extreme demon coin. It was one of a kind and the coin you suggested was definitely implemented in various LESS interesting levels which would IMO detrement SC’s charm.

you bring up a good point that the difficulty of a coin is a very important factor. user coins are ultimately not very valuable, if you make your coin too difficult, the time sink for that coin will not be worth the coin itself. you have to respect the player's time sedulous was a level that highlighted this to me, even if it's a skill issue. i died trying to get that coin at the end about 10 times before deciding to give up on it, me attempting to have done it at all, whether i got it or not, would have left a sour taste in my mouth

0:00 wherwin jumper cover sneak peak I don't think we need specific “criteria” for coins in this game. To me, coins are not just collectables, they are tools. For example, my lebel windige welten has a long intro with a 3SH gag. It's funny the first time you play it, but it gets boring quickly. So I added an easter egg where if you blindly do a 3SH click pattern during the intro, you are rewarded with a coin. This allows the player to stay engaged. In my next level kAFKAESK I'm working on, there's a part with a bunch of pictures as a block design, one of the pictures strongly resembles the bob-omb battlefield from SM64. If you recognize the reference and “enter” the picture, you will be teleported to a separate location with a mario theme, a special gimmick, and increased difficulty. It's a funny joke that rewards the player for his intelligence. Plus, it makes the level seem much bigger than it really is. The whole level is like a joke if you think of it, so this coin helps immerse the player in to the level even more. So I think the coin in Removed Submission has a place. In short, each coin deserves a detailed analysis separately, the criteria can only take away creativity I think. Godd vid anyway ! ! 2:04 Y&P looks great btw

great points you made there I thought you would mention the coin list in here after mentioning Serpent's Wrath, which would be a great way to add a 4th point: overbuffing coins is extremely bad. I myself love to collect all the extra things that games have to offer, like coins here. If I beat a level and didn't collect coins I didn't truly beat the level (at least to me), and having to do an straight fly you would see in a main list, or do a top 10 wave challenge in order to get a coin in a 5* is insulting. That kind of coin placement to the creator could be funny, not to an average player. Now I wouldn't really care about those levels and not play them, but when Rob once made RESPITE by Kiba a weekly I was really mad that he approved those types of coins This topic could probably go well as a separate video now that I think about it

Nail👏on👏the👏head 👏 Agree with I think every single point here. Like, I LOVE collecting coins whenever I play gd, but I just never feel incentivized to do so. Big fetch quests are really tedious so I never am inclined to learn them, and I feel like a lot of others are just too hard to find and therefore I lose interest. Phenomenal video, probably one of my new favorites here. I also want to add one more thing that got briefly touched on but I think deserved more time, which is making coins invisible. I feel like it should go without saying but making literally ANY coin completely invisible is horrible design. I don't even mean off screen. I'm talking in the field of view while set to the lowest opacity for the sake of hiding it. Not only does this make the coin impossible to see in passing, but it also means that you can't find it in practice. Since the coin collect animation is disabled in practice mode, you can literally never know that you're collecting a coin and end up searching elsewhere for it (especially when they're free at the end of a level). Anyone who reads this, PLEASE don't make your coins invisible

I used to dislike the first coin in Serpents Wrath because of how much of a difference in difficulty it is from the other routes, and how disproportionate the challenge is from the value of your reward. Now, instead of relying on an external factor to determine the value, I give the coin the value for what it is. I find this approach distinctly unique, although most likely unintended. It’s basically an extreme in the shape of a coin, and it demands the player to see that in order to make it reasonable. To me, the reward is not the coin, but the accomplishment. Still, I don’t know if I would call it a “good” coin, since this perspective definitely isn’t intended. Also, regarding elaborate coins: Although I do dislike them, I feel like they can be redeemable in the sense that they can add replay value to levels you like.

I'd like to add to what you said about elaborate coin placements. For me, the issue boils down to how immediately noticeable and enticing the route is. If the coin is collecting multiple other collectibles, than having those collectibles treated as less complex user coins works great, see jonathan gd levels. I'll also add that I'm not a huge fan of coins that require you miss out on a large portion of the base gameplay to collect, because to me, those routes are almost always the less intended ways that match with the music less and having to miss out on so much of the actual level to get a collectible just feels bad. Even if the level has multiple equally intended routes, one of them is generally more fun or interesting than the others and so taking any route other than that one makes it feel like you got the worse experience, exception to this being the launch by xyuns where somehow every route is really fun

i really like the coins in casino blitz some just require finding stuff around the level and stuff but the one where you have to get blackjack its really cool and if you don't collect them you can just get them all if you use the slot machine in the end with the tokens you find around the level and that's what i like they are a small extra challenge and stay in the casino theme

Good points you brought up, I do especially agree with what you said about simpler coins even though I like pulling off elaborate coins. Gotta say, limeade's coin is pretty bad, but I think it was on purpose, just a ridiculous task for people that are in the mood for completely destroying the pace of a level.
