The government could solve the high beam driving problem. All they has to do is put up street lights on the highway using solar to power them at nights. The more lights you have on the highway the less need for high beam driving.

Rented a car at Kingston airport and drove to St Thomas. Worst experience I ever had, people speeding, roads narrow, no street lights and on top of that.....it was raining and nighttime. Another occasion, rented from same airport to Ocho Rios. Very pleasant ride on the highway. 4 wheel drive is recommended.

The other day I saw a truck squeezed this lady off the road all I could do is watch and scream some peoples driving skills is next to nothing, they dont have no patience at all and they dont know how to dim lights while driving at night they're crazy. To drive in jamaica you better be attentive at all times ok .

IRENA, HI THERE, being born in JA, I learned to drive there, getting my drivers license in USA, was,,,different, but returningI usually had a relatives vehicle to use, but there were times I rented, ALWAYS a MANUAL SHIFT, always had a great time, I heard that someone made a GPS for JAMAICA, ESSO used to have the best maps those days . Google printed maps, the ONLY time I used it, made me buy a TOM TOM GPS, now on my 6th one , they had NEVER LET ME DOWN, but I ALWAYS did a quick display to see if I might go elsewhere , after constantly changing part of my route, they called me asking if I would mind the using my route, said sure, it cut out 30 minutes to get a highway , which they going to send me to ! & life goes on.! Cheers 🇬🇧🇬🇺🇮🇨🇯🇲🇺🇸

I was in Jamaica last week and rented a Toyota Carolla from Budget at the MBJ airport for 8 days. Total was $499.00 with an additional $200.00 downpayment that I got back at the end of the rental. You're the best, Irina. I am currently grappling with the same dilemma. I rented a car for one day from the airport. I arrived in Jamaica on Saturday from the US. I am a Jamaican by birth. Left Jamaica many years ago, though. Never drove in Jamaica before. Find it easy, except I hit the curb at least one time, yesterday, I blew I tire. Fell in a large pot hole. Could you cover the pot hole situation in Jamaica sometime? It drives me crazy. I am in Kingston. My husband who is American by birth freaks out when he sees the bad drivers, and when I have to dodge so many of them. Thanks for all your help and advise. 😲

I'm an experienced driver in U. S. The problem for me was two. Small roads and driving on the left. Was destined to be total confusion if I were to rent a car as planned when I land Kingston 2018. Meaning bad idea. And yes, keep the passenger side inna di bush. The round abouts are easy enough. They are biased to the left. Where North American ones are biased right. So driveway sized roads coupled with left driving are a brain melt down if you are not prepared. So you have to observe for at least a few days before attempting. As a seasoned driver.

Night driving is a nightmare in certain areas in Jamaica. When I leave the Airport and get a rental it's usually after 6 pm, my journey is to get to Ocho Rios which is an hour and a half driving . First you have to get used to high bushes and overbearing trees dark Road potholes and narrow streets you have to honk your horn around deadly corners😧 not to mention Bridges with no guardrails!! These are just a few things that may not be so easy for everyone 🤨 But keep up the good work and respect 💯

But if we compare driving in Jamaica with..Canada - sure, Jamaica won't stand the competition! Then again.. any country fails at everything, when compared to Canada, lol! @@JAMAICAWITHIRIE - I consider both Avis and Hertz at Norman Manley International Airport well established businesses. Recording a video during the pre-rental inspection and not drive off the the lot before any potential issues are presented to the rental form is very important.

If you plan to rent a car when visiting Jamaica, a good idea can be to check of your card issuer offers insurance. My American Express card does which saves me money every time. Be sure to know how to verify the policy as the clerk will not let it slip. As for driving itself, most Europeans should be fine while American drivers can find it stressful. Keep calm, look for potholes, avoid driving minor roads at night if unfamiliar to the are and be alert on other drivers.

I noted that some left side driving countries (right hand steering column) don't have different sides for the blinkers and wipers to north America's right side driving. I've often driven in Australia and it is the other way round, but I believe the UK is the same. I'm from the UK, but learnt to drive in Canada, but have subsequently often driven in the UK , but can't remember if they are the same as the UK, but I always have an issue returning from Australia, but not the UK with hitting the wipers instead of the blinkers, so I'm guessing the UK is the same (which I'm also guessing is because they sell to/and get the cars from right side driving mainland Europe). All this to say, my biggest issue is this and not the actual driving on the other side (so far...touch wood!).

google can sometimes send u the wrong way down one way streets sometimes. Also some towns like Falmouth in Trelawny constantly have traffic flow changes.

ahaha, that's another lovely "shortcut" google maps recommended me on one of those days...! 😅😅😅 I find it easier to drive to Black River first via B8+A2 roads, and then go up to Ginger Hill :)
