The creature you keep calling a raccoon is probably a Coati. They had lots of them at the resort I stayed at near Playa Del Carmen a few years ago.

When does high school graduation take place in the US? Would it be around now? I suspect that all the 18yr olds may have went to Mexico for post graduation trips because of the lower drinking age... I'm in the UK and loads of my classmates went on trips to Spain and the Canary Islands when we finished school bc there's a big party culture there and lots of hotels, resturants and resorts that cater to non-Spanish speakers. I imagine resorts in Mexico would be popular with US high school graduates due to the lower drinking age and the fact they cater to tourists.

Usually high school graduations in the US are late May and early June. The timing of the trips makes sense(some people might have waited until after Father’s Day)
