This video is for anyone who's asking the question, "Why doesn't my lavaliere microphone work with my iPhone?" or "My shotgun mic plugs into my iPhone, but I don't get any sound". The most likely scenario is that the connector that's on your external mic isn't compatible for use with smartphones. Thankfully, the fix is simple and relatively inexpensive.

Thanks for the very helpful and imformative video! Im wondering what cable you recomend for placing the mic (Zoom H1n) 15 feet from the iPhone? Is the recommended TRRS (male) to TRS (female) adaptor an attenuator cable, as apparently necessary for the mic's headphone out jack? Does my 15 foot cable also need to be attenuator type, or is it automatically such as an audio cable? The best TRS cable I find is male/male, so apparently l also need a TRS male-to-female adaptor? Sorry, this is all new to me!

Thanks for this video! You explained it all very well, although, I will need to watch again 🥴 because my brain power is low right now lol I hope you can offer me some advice. I have an iPad 9.7, got it in 2018. I’m going to be using it for interviews and meetings on google hangouts. So, I’m going to use headphones pretty often, and I also want to clarify my sound by using a mic. Maybe this is a simple request. But, if I have my earbuds in the headphone jack, then where would I plug in the mic? Will I have to get a mic to plug into the usb-c port? Or a headset splitter? Sorry, I’ve just started looking up this stuff today , so I’m not well versed in the jargon 🤦🏽‍♀️ I hope you can help me understand what my options are. Thanks again for the video. I know it’s for iPhones but I thought maybe some of it might apply to an iPad... but I do have a headphone jack. Hope to hear from you soon 🙏🏾

The big problem is that the non-phantom powered Rode mics all pick up WiFi signal interference, and even if you turn on airplane mode on the iPhone, the audio is still usually ruined by nearby routers and WiFi signals. This is a huge issue for the videomic go, pro, micro, etc. I ended up getting an irig HD as a mobile interface to avoid the issue.

Your video is incredibly helpful! I had yelled EUREKA! when you mentioned the two TRRS standards. I bought 2 splitters and the damn Lightning to 3.5mm adapter detects them BOTH as headPHONES instead of headSETs, as such, the recording is defaulted to the internal microphone and not the one plugged in. At first I thought the splitters I bought were OMTP instead of CTIA, however I just confirmed on Amazon that the first one I bought is in fact CTIA. It must be a defective unit as I have a Sony XA Ultra which doesn't detect the adapter at all. I'm really frustrated 😩

I read somewhere that the iPhone need the impedance to be at least 800 ohm in order to detect an external microphone. Some microphone may have impedance less than the required 800 ohm. I get around it by installing a 1000 ohm resistor in series on the microphone input cable.

Hi. I do a lot of outdoor videos and the wind is a nightmare. So I purchased a shotgun microphone with a dead cat, to block out the wind noise. It works great. But the trouble I’m having is. My iPhone 7 XR internal microphone is still working and picking up the wind noise, Even though I’m using a external microphone. That’s why I purchased an external microphone. Shouldn’t an external microphone cut off the internal one for making outdoor videos. Do you know how to solve this issue please.

@@HeliumContent Thanks for your answer and your time ! I haven't got volume boutons, as I connect the Zoom h4n with stereo cable > Y trs-trrs adapter > dongle > iPhone. I guess my problem is a little different after all.. It doesn't make that sound when I listen to music..This clicking sound occurs when I record from the iPhone camera app or live instagram with some music going into the phone (zoom h4n or music coming from another source). The louder the music gets, the louder the click (but not a saturation problem, it's like a metronome [approx 45 bpm] ). But weirdly doesn't happen when recorded on Garageband app for instance...It's a major problem when I want to make live instagram concerts. Tried it with 2 iphones 1 iPad and 2 different dongles..I guess I need to go for a cleaner solution (USB solution, maybe iRig i/o).

Great video! Your video is the first explanation that was both comprehensive and clear! Bravo! It also caused me to realize why the headphone extension cords I bought a long time ago didn’t work with my Apple earbuds. I’m guessing that because my earbuds have a TRRS plug (given the built-in microphone), the extension cords, which have a TRS jack, are not compatible. Whereas, if I try really old Apple earbuds, that don’t have built-in microphone, they will work with my headphone extension cords. Does that sound right?

I bought the Belkin adapter a while back but only to find out it doesn't doe audio in. So far using a lightning-splitter then using a charging cable and a audio-jack to lightning adapter (adapter in an adapter) seems like the only way.... Are you aware of any other cable/adapter that will fix this?

I have an iPhone 7 but need a lav lapel mic. I've bought one from PowerDewise. It has the TRRS jack but it doesn't work with my phone. The only thing I can think of is that my dongol adapter for lightning. It may not be so I ordered one from Apple since the one I have is aftermarket. Ii am waiting to get it in the mail but the Apple web site wouldn't state if it was TRRS or not. Do you know?

Tim, my best guess is that it’s the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter too. The original Apple version works fine for me, and it should for you too.

I wonder if anyone here can help me? I’m using an Apple branded lightning adapter with an iPhone 11 and a trs female to trrs male adapter intended for use with smartphones. I have tried multiple different audio sources, a handheld dynamic mic, a dj mixers headphone out, and the stereo line out of a audio interface via 1/4in trs to 3.5mm trs, all to the same result. The phone continues to record via it’s built in microphone and appears to be trying to send it’s own audio signal out rather than receiving the audio input, I can’t find any information about how to fix this online, and have followed what several guides say exactly.

I'm not an expert (obviously lol) in recording so I don't record with an DSLR because the video files are too large to transfer to my phone to edit, a 3-5 minute recording is like 1.5 GB :( I don't know if I'm doing it right. QUESTION if you can answer it: I am looking to record audio with an external mic and or STREAM Online with same setup ... I am using iPhone 6 plus. In the past I have used audio adapters on ANDROID phones for live events and I have been able to monitor audio with headphones while recording audio with an external mic, all while using an audio adapter/splitter. I have seen your video about the StarTech adapter for the 3.5mm headphone jack with an iPhone. Very informative ... however ... What I'm trying to get an answer to, when using an audio adapter/splitter for headphones and mic on an iPhone 6 plus, can you monitor audio via the headphone and for line level check while recording with an external mic, while using the standard video recording app built into the phone or while streaming on Facebook? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? Help me Obi-wan Kenobi you''re my only hope!

This worked for me: Electrovoice RE20, to Behringer Shark DSP110 (gain at max), to Movo MC3 3.5mm TRS to TRRS Adaptor, to ienza 3.5mm CTIA TRRS 4-Pole Male to Dual CTIA TRRS Female Stereo 4-Pole (Microphone/Headphone) Splitter Cable, to Apple lighting to 3.5mm adaptor, to iPhone 11. Will not work without the Movo adaptor. If you don’t need headphones then you don’t need the splitter. Other splitters didn’t work. It was hard to find this splitter.

Hi Owen, what's the interface between your mixer and iPhone 7+?
@idrumalot
@idrumalot 4 жыл бұрын
Helium Cine hey thanks so much for replying. No interface. I’m running direct out of the mixer. I thought I needed an iRig or some type of interface but it worked perfectly running direct (one time only). From the mixer I’m running Main Out XLR to TRS 1/4” - converting to TRRS 3.5mm - into my TRRS to Lightning adapter. I’m baffled as to why I can’t reproduce it working fine with this configuration...
@HeliumContent
@HeliumContent 4 жыл бұрын
@@idrumalot My best guess is that it's because the output of a mixer is at line level, which is very high, and that it's too much for your phone. You need an attenuator cable such as this one amzn.to/2ZMBwks which will reduce the output from the mixer to the iPhone. Do you have an unused headphone output on your mixer? You could connect the headphone out to your iPhone-to-Lightning adapter. That would be the way to go, in my opinion.
@idrumalot
@idrumalot 4 жыл бұрын
Helium Cine Helium Cine thank you. I have an attenuator cable on order - the headset buddy. In the meantime I’ve tried the headphone out of the mixer, RCA monitor mix out, Aux out... no luck. So far your video (of the hundreds I’ve watched so far) is the only one that mentions “CTIA” cables. I’m wondering if one of my adapters is not? Thank you so much for replying. 🙏
@HeliumContent
@HeliumContent 4 жыл бұрын
@@idrumalot It's entirely possible. My bigger concern is that you might have fried something internally because of the 'hot' signal from the mixer. Crossing my fingers and hoping that that's not the case! Please update me on what you learn!
