Please help, i have a scarlett 2i2 and apple lightning to USB 3 adapter connected to a powerbrick and the iPad (5th generation, iOS 13.2.3 ) still says “Cannot use accessory: Scarlett 2i2 USB: this accessory requires too much power”. Hey there. I would highly recommend a powered USB hub in this situation as it will provide much more reliable power and work with any iOS device, as it won’t drain any of the power from your iPhone or iPad.

Hi Pete. Great video. A good audio interface to consider if you want to avoid the lightning connection issues is the Focusrite iTrack Solo. It comes with a lightning cable, so you can just plug and play. I picked mine up 2nd hand, boxed and barely used for about the same price as the usb to lightning adapter you’re using in the vid. It doesn’t draw power from the iPad, so you do need to connect it to a usb power source.
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Nice one! Thanks for the recommendation. I have seen the iTrack Solo around the place and often wondered if it was a good option since it supports iOS out of the box. So it has two separate connections, one for power and one for data?
@SMBorthwick5 жыл бұрын
@@PeteJohnsMusic Yes. It has a usb power supply which I just plug in to an Apple charger. The Lightning cable has a proprietary connector to the device which probably won’t work with anything else. The interface can apparently work with Mac or PC if you download the appropriate driver, although I’ve never tried it. Other than that, it’s pretty standard. Two inputs with separate gain stages (mic and jack), phantom power, direct headphone monitor and two line outs for monitors. I’ve never used anything else, so I don’t know how it compares to other devices, but it’s working fine for me.
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Beautiful! Thanks for the extra info. Looks like a really solid option for those wanting an "out of the box" solution but wanting something more solid than the iRig range.

I would love to see a comparison between the iTrack Solo and the Scarlet Solo as those are the two I’ve narrowed my search to. I asked a KZbin reviewer if the iTrack and she said Scarlet will produce a bit better sound.
@SMBorthwick5 жыл бұрын
@@PeteJake100 I’m not sure anyone could say that unequivocally unless they had tried both or studied the components list. For me, the iTrack Solo was an easy choice because I didn’t need an extra camera kit to get connected. I tend to think along the lines of the fewer additional connections in the signal path the better.

You don’t need a hub. You can just use your charger that comes with your iPad. If you’re recording acoustic guitars with CONDENDER mics the FOCUSRITE has 48 volt phantom power. Your acoustic guitar ,and vocals will sound ten times better using a condenser mics. Why does EVERYONE say to use a hub. Use your regular iPad charger.
@PeteJohnsMusic3 жыл бұрын
Hey there. It depends on the audio interface generally. Some will work fine with just the charger plugged in however some tend to use an inconsistent amount of power and need the powered hub. If you have an interface that gets enough power form the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter then you’re good to go. But folks who get the “this device uses too much power” message will need to simply add a hub to their setup. studiolivetoday.com/usb

Even if I activate the “monitor” icon in GarageBand, the iPad doesn't sound. I have tried the two solutions that Apple offers on its website, in the troubleshooting section, in the section "GarageBand for IOS: Audio is not heard when monitoring an external device" I have tried both solutions and the problem remains unsolved. Regarding the lightning connection situation on base model, is the only drawback just the inconvenience of having to use the additional lightning to usb converter? or does it have any other effects on playback sound quality or production performance in general, compared to having a direct usb c connection on the iPad?

Great question my friend. In my experience the only real difference is that you definitely need a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter as opposed to USB-C where you can use pretty much any generic adapters. @sammodog3 жыл бұрын
Just started using Scarlett 2i4 yesterday and ran into a similar issue. The order in which you hook up the Scarlett is important. Make sure nothing is plugged into the Scarlett or iPhone. First plug in the iPhone/iPad camera adapter 3 into device and make sure power is connected to it. Then connect the Scarlett to the camera adapter USB port. Make sure phantom power is not on when you connect or you will get a not enough power message. Once connected and powered you can then connect your inputs and use phantom power if needed. These steps need to repeated any time the Scarlett or iPhone/iPad is disconnected. Also, in my case no matter what order I tried (and I’m ocd when it comes to troubleshooting) the Scarlett would not power up properly when connected to a powered usb hub. I’m using a usb 2 Scarlett btw. I’ve read that the 3rd generation may not have drivers installed on the device as 1st and 2nd gen do as well just fyi.

Can it work just by setting up the Scarlett and usb 3 adapter?
@PeteJohnsMusic4 жыл бұрын
As long as you plug in to A/C power with the USB 3 adapter this will often work, but isn’t as reliable in my experience. I always recommend a powered USB hub for any interfaces that are bus powered as the iPad/iPhone often just doesn’t have enough power.

Hi there. So you have an audio interface with a mic plugged in and you're hearing playback through the interface? If the mic is a condenser mic is the phantom power on? Also make sure you're using a genuine Apple lightning to USB adapter and a powered hub if necessary.

Big thumbs up, really loved the video! I have a question guys; what's the difference between recording on an 'entry level' iPhone / iPad Vs their higher end models? I wanna avoid spending more than I really need to. I'm just getting into this, mostly for fun. I'm thinking of recording guitars, bass, drums and vocals. How would an entry level iPad limit me as opposed to a balls out Pro model?
@PeteJohnsMusic4 жыл бұрын
“Balls out” - love it. So, I’ve been using (and still use) and iPad Air 2 - which is currently the oldest model a to ok supporting by iOS 13, and it does a decent job recording for sure. The sort of music I record is pretty straightforward so I’m not using huge amounts of virtual instruments or plugins. If you’re using 5 external apps and 6 plugins on every channel, sure you might need something more modern, but in my experience you don’t need to break the bank to get in to mobile recording. Thank you for the video!!! Quick question, i connected my mic to my scarlett 2i2 to the power hub to the adapter to my iphone but im only getting audio in the left side when I record?
@PeteJohnsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the way two channel audio interfaces work is that they only record audio on the left for channel 1 and the right for channel 2. Recording to something like GarageBand will help with this as you can choose where to pan the audio. If using other apps, you would need to convert the audio in editing using something like AudioShare or LumaFusion on iOS.
@MarcoAustriaMusic4 жыл бұрын
Pete Johns thank you! Actually I also saw that on video settings it was set to stereo so yeah I had a mic in the left port. I'm recording video in iPhone so I'll have to try mono next time!

Thanks for all this info. My interest is much simpler- I simply want to connect a DAC to my iPad for earphones. I’m puzzled why you need the powers hub. Can’t you simply connect the lightning power cable for charging the iPad into the Lightning port of the Apple Camera Kit? Wouldn’t this supply enough power for the USB-powered DAC?

This will work with some iPhones and iPads but not all. And sometimes you’ll get random “this device uses too much power” errors. This is why I always recommend the powered hub.

Yup. This is because any 2 channel interface uses stereo so apps that use stereo audio will push audio to just one side. What I do is edit the audio afterwards to make it mono, either in LumaFusion video editor or AudioShare. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKaYiap3jNWma6c

I have an iPhone X. Tried to connect my Behringer UM-2 interface (love it!) to GarageBand. I used a powered USB 4-port USB 3 hub, an Apple Lightning to USB cable (not the wide one). GarageBand let me pick the channel on the interface, and I could see it was getting a signal, but with no headphone out on the phone I couldn't hear it. I tried USB earbuds but as soon as they connected, the UM-2 disconnected. Something I haven't found in the phone only allows one or the other, not both, to be active. So I guess I need to stick with my iRig interface until I get a different phone. Very good video, I like how you showed several interfaces and options. I got very close to making it work!
@mrdave740a4 жыл бұрын
Update: tried again today, it all works now. No bluetooth needed; sound plays from the audio interface into my headphones. Not sure what changed since yesterday, maybe a monitor setting, but sound is very good. Nice to be able to start a GarageBand drummer and play along, using amps and effects in the phone. Also tried connecting an XLR mic and my keyboard (via USB hub) and it worked seamlessly, all at the same time. It's easy to capture ideas now from any source and build into different tracks. So thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
