A few years ago I decided to lose weight and get lean while doing that I found the love of running. I've run 5 marathons in last two years and am in the best shape of my life. Just turned 54 and enjoying the journey.

It's even harder when you are 80! Four years ago I ran the Disney marathon and came in 5th in my age devision. but last October I started an 8K mile motorcycle trip to celebrate my 80th birthday but 5 days into it I got distracted and ran off the road - didn't hurt my bike but I broke my shoulder.as I went over, So a year later I decided to get off the couch, joined the Y, got a personal trainer. started rucking and as soon as the water goes down from Hurricane Milton, I'm going to start hiking the Florida National Scenic Trail. You started off with the "WHY" and to believe in your why is the key to motivation.. Thanks -

Hey there. Thanks for your video. I just wanted to leave a comment, as I'm a 50+ year old beginner too. I've never run in my life before. A bit of tennis or bike in my youth, nothing more. I suffered a heart attack a few years ago, and starting to move my ass is part of the treatment that was given to me. So I strarted. And you're right. The beginning is terrible, you feel ridiculous. Lasting just a few minutes, out of breath, etc... You have to commit, be driven by a good "why". And it gets better so fast, amazing. A few years later, I'm still running. 2/3 times a week. Looking back, it's the best thing that happend to me, at 50 years old, being thrown outside and having a sweat. Improving your body, it just improves your whole life. Especially when you get older. Everybody can run. It's so easy. Put a pair of shoes on, an off you go.

Play the hand your dealt. Love you saw it as a moment of change and the future is all the brighter for it.

I noticed after like 35 you really have to work to maintain your body. I started at 37 and mildly overweight. Ran my first half marathon 6 months in. Planning to fly through my 40s and 50s with good fitness and health benefits.

That proactive attitude will hopefully serve you well. Mobility and fitness laying a great ground work for the aging process. Are you thinking of during a full marathon in the future or branching out into some triathlons perhaps. Good Luck. Glad you liked the topic.

@@daretocoaching Mobility benefits also a thing. Especially after 60s. My dad is in his 70s now. He has been inactive, drinking alcohol and smoking throughout his life. Hes so rusty he can barely even walk. Clogged or hardened arteries and loss of muscle mass. I took him to the half marathon with me. I told him: look dad, there are men out there of your age who still run a half marathon. Yet you are here sitting on a bench not being able to even walk a small distance. I don't want to end up like him. I drink only on special occasions, don't smoke and I eat healthy.

@@daretocoaching I do have history of competitive swimming and cycling. But no plans for triathlon or full marathon yet. I want to do a half marathon in under 100 mins first. :)

I started my health journey when I was 62. It took 17 months to reach my goal. 2.5 years now and I am living life to the fullest and I am about to turn 65. My health is optimal and every thing has improved. Thank you for this video. Cheers.

Why running though... running hurts LOL I'm 50 and overweight but I chose walking, cycling and swimming, I plan to add some weights later when I feel a little stronger. And who knows, maybe eventually I might end up jogging a bit :)

I'm 53, was and cycle and do strength exercises. I started to walk on some countryside routes up and down a hill near me with a view to start running. But I have found the up down hill walk so beneficial to my knee ligaments and leg muscles , they hey stronger and get stretched ! I have decided to just stick to walking and give running a miss

...does it make your knees feel like they might explode?

From accidents I had a lot of problems with my back hips ankles and a little with knees. Thankfully took it super slow getting into a running so body adapted to the workload in a manageable way. A little swimming, hiking and cycling help break up the running program. Personally I also found getting the right shoes and strength program helped the body as a whole. I hope you can find a level of output that allows you to stay repeatably active. Good Luck
