I've (almost) always had the willpower to exercise, but NOT to watch or limit what I eat. Portion control means stop when you finish the box. However, I find the more I run, the more I naturally gravitate to healthier options without the constant mental flogging. Just ran 5 miles... cheese and crackers sounds lovely, but I think I'll have a fruit and veg smoothie, so refreshing! It's not that I crave the yummy stuff less... just that I seem to find the healthier stuff MORE yummy than before exercising, so I choose it more often.

I've been running on and off for about ten years now and one bit of advice that I've always found valuable that I've rarely heard said is to add a few long sprints to the end of your run. I don't mean pick up the pace for the last 100 meters. I mean like once youve finished your long distance portion, add on two 800 meter, absolute balls to the wall sprints to cap off your run. I don't know how to explain why it's so beneficial, but I've tried running and getting in shape without it and... it's just not the same. Something about burning off whatever ounces of energy you might have left, and absolutely cashing in on that cathartic runners high and turning in after that just makes everything so much better. You should be sprinting as hard as you can, getting almost completely exhausted, having to slow down, only to start slightly catching your breath, pick back up again, almost die of exhaustion, slow way down, then pick it up once again by the time you finish with the run. Something about having to catch your breath while still at a running pace really pays off for the long distance portion of your run as well.

I took up jogging/running/walking after a vast 20 year gap. I started initially to go hiking in the Italian Alps near Austria. I managed 1 climb of 2800 meters and 2 small 2000 meter climbs. Then I started working on the treadmill and went from 1km nonstop (age 48) to 8km on the treadmill with 2 slowdowns (age 49). I did this for a few months until covid shut down our gyms in Germany. Then I took up outside walking/jogging/running. First time I went out for 1km and felt like I was going to die. I made excuses (age 49-late) and every week I pushed it and started to go out 1km further every 10 days. At age 50 I did 3 climbs in the same Italian Alps near Austria where I did 3 climbs of 3000 meters, 2800 meters and 3100 meters in 5 days. Since then, I am exclusively outside. Going from 5 km a day for 3 days to now 8km a day for 6 days of easy runs. I'm 51. Next goal...half marathon as soon as it's allowed (2022-Age 52), then...base camp of K2...a 2 week trek by age 55. Life is about what you make out of it. Even if you are not working, use your spare time when you aren't looking for a job to take jogging up. I'm overweight...still, but I was 258 pounds when I started this journey...I was then diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after I lost almost 75 pounds within a very very short period of time...then I ballooned to 270lbs. Now, I stabilized my sugar and my Hb1ac, I weigh 187 pounds, and I love running at 0500 for 1 hour....6 times a week. On the 7th day I do a very slow easy walk of 5km. Life is good.

You can't out exercise a bad diet. One thing I would also mention is that when you're heavier, you're going to wear out the support in your running shoes faster. Wearing proper running shoes is really critical and replacing them on the low side of the replacement range is the best strategy. I ended up with Achilles tendonitis as a heavy runner and wore a boot for 4 months with no cardio. I switched to cycling to support a full recovery, which allowed me to finish my weight loss (95 lbs in total, 15" from my waist). Enjoying both running and cycling led me to triathlon!
@LiveHardxLoveHard4 жыл бұрын
You've got some great pointers here, but I would personally try to avoid the mentality alluded to at 2:25 , namely that getting oneself into a calorie deficit is "the whole reason" to be running. That kind of attitude towards running seems to be a recipe for burnout, and less likely to be sustainable for weight loss in the long term. However, I do believe that finding a way to enjoy running (whether it's by joining a running group, challenging yourself by signing up for races, etc.) is the ticket to a lasting and healthy relationship with the sport. At that point, the calorie deficit is often a natural and welcomed bonus for your efforts :)
@jaydesimone42974 жыл бұрын
That's a good point generally, but I interpreted the comment in the context of the video, ie, running to lose weight. I think overweight people often come to running to burn calories first then fall in love with it. I include myself in that group as a formerly obese person...running was torture but I came to really love it...now it's something of a toss up whether I enjoy running or cycling more.
@LiveHardxLoveHard4 жыл бұрын
@Slimmerlife - Weight Loss Experts Well, I would say your first point is spot on. However, there's also evidence to suggest that weight does not always directly correlate with overall health (have you heard of Health At Every Size/HAES? Really fascinating arguments they make there). That being said, I personally never try to assume someone's overall health just by knowing their weight. I'm a huge believer in focusing on health, cardiovascular fitness, and proper nutrition - with that, most of the time I think our bodies will find their natural "healthy" weights.

In my experience, the emphasis on diet in order to lose weight, 'out weighs' that of running/exercise. When I eventually increased my weekly mileage from 12 to 32 I never lost an ounce. I was 16 stone (optimal 14st) and stayed that weight until I began to diet. I now see exercise/ running as more a weight maintenance strategy, than an aid to weight loss.

I’m far more intuitive than analytical about my weight loss journey. And my weight loss is lead by training, both running/walking and weight training. When I’m active, particularly vigorous activity, my body naturally cues me to seek healthy foods. If I’m idle for a day or two I feel a draw toward less healthy eating. I suspect that I could lose faster if I were to be more analytical, but this is working for me. I’ve lost 20 pounds in 5 months. My current target is to lose a total of as much as 60 pounds. But I’ll see how my body is doing as I get closer to the goal. This weight loss would get me down to a weight I haven’t seen since my 20s. I’m not sure it will be a healthy weight for me now. That’s really my goal, a healthy weight level that my body can agree with. My time horizon is as much as two years. I would not be disappointed if it took three. I’m not in a hurry, but when I get there I want it to be permanent.

I enjoyed this video and learned from it, thank you. I took up running 2 months ago (going from a completely sedentary life, to walking, to walk/jog, and now I am able to cover 6 km in 1 hour by walking half of it and running half of it). Consistency really is key. However, I've noticed that I have not lost a single lb and that's because I am not watching what I eat. I really do need to count my calories and use caution with my daily eating habits - then coupled with running, I will see a change. Before my running journey started, I lost 16 lbs by ONLY counting my calories (no exercise). Running is like free therapy for me - it's very tough to do and my whole body hurts, but it reduces my stress and I just love it. Weight loss is an added bonus of running, if done right.
@Eagle6Airsoft4 жыл бұрын
The video is correct in every way. As someone that did use running to lose from 22 to 16 stone. I can’t emphasis enough how important it is to get the diet right and if you want to run, find your goal weight and don’t stop the diet or run until you get there, I did several half iron man length tris at 16 stone snd let me tell you every part of the running, cycling snd swimming is made that much harder with every pound you carry. Even on the flats cycling is made harder being ever weight, not to mention the impact on joints and spine from running while over weight. You lose weight in the kitchen but if you must this video is correct. Especially the gym work, I did solid running to train and feel I really missed a trick not strengthening the core muscles but again I was always fighting an up hill battle carrying the weight.
@Eagle6Airsoft4 жыл бұрын
@@TruTube.1. haha 😆 not sure what this is a call out for. I simply replied with my experience. You are right though I do not do triathlon any more not after spine surgery on 2 levels which ended my running combined with my business taking up more time. I spent a large amount of time doing triathlon, it’s not something you can easily switch off just so you don’t offend who ever the hell you are on a you tube channel, it’s not an easy sport for any one over weight to get into, the majority of coaches not having any clue how to training someone that weight because they would never ever let themselves get to it, hence have no knowledge and any training plan can not be applied. Everything is harder, everything hurts more. Having done it I highly recommend losing weight prior too exercising, but if you must the above vid is correct. You run walk, swimming as much as possible. Keep cycle sessions short with a day in between to let the ass recover from the pressure of your weight on the cycle. Remember I’m talking about a weight level that most watchers of this channel couldn’t comprehend and I hope the never have too. I completed outlaw holkham half in 5hr35 which was my first half distance Tri, not a bad time in my opinion for 16 stone and a first go. It required about 3 years of training and weight loss to get to that stage of being able to enter, up to that point I did the usual progress from sprint to standard. If I had been goal weight of 12 stone it would have been a shed load faster.

A few things to note 1. running in zone 1 / zone 2 will be more effective at burning fat than zones 3 and above 2. carbohydrates are not evil. if you go without carbs you will have less energy to run effectively 3. don't be calorie/joule deficient to the extreme. doing so will put your body in to a type of "survival" mode in which the body assumes that you are starving to death and therefore stores extra fat 4. find out your BMR - base metabolic rate (not your BMI). BMR is simply the number of calories/joules needed to simply survive for 24 hours (say if you woke up and didnt move from your bed all day - didnt open your eyes, eat, drink, talk or move).

@@scarred10 I agree that carbs will be used for any running pace however if you would be kind enough to refer back to point 1 *"1. running in zone 1 / zone 2 will be more effective at burning fat than zones 3 and above"* you will see that I wrote about zones 1 & 2 being more effective at fat burning than the higher zones - simply because you don't have such an urgent need for a quick energy release. This is one of the reasons why energy gels tend to contain a few different forms of sugar (eg glucose, fructose, maltodextrin etc) as they release energy at different rates, negating the chance of an energy spike and then crash. And I think point 2 shows that I am not "anti carb" Thank you for your attention though. I appreciate the time that you took to reply.

the best way is to just go out and do it. everyday. no excuse. eat a paleo diet, drink water, sleep well and reduce your stress levels. but watch what you're eating. play your favorite songs on your earbuds and just have fun. run 30 mins once you adapted you'll pull off 1-3 hrs, more determined? run twice a day early in the morning when it's cool outside, stay hydrated, if tired from work? go for a long walk out everyday afterwork it is as effected as running just a slower paste. have fun and do not stress about it. make it the best habit reflex for yourself.

Look up lower calorie versions of your favorite foods. Eating low calorie dense foods is key for sustainable weight loss. You'll never feel hungry, you'll enjoy what you eat, and you'll lose weight like clockwork. Oh, and running helps 😉

Great video with plenty of information on running and weight loss. Lost a bunch of weight with running once the pandemic lockdowns started. More exercise and less eating! Plus changing the diet helped a tremendous amount. However, holidays and winter have set in and I need to get back to running more. Thanks GTN!

Swimming is a better calorie burner than running.
@peterritchie25544 жыл бұрын
@@darrenkelly7271 I would argue that although swimming uses a more diverse range of muscles, it won't raise the heart rate as much as running does due to the fact that running is weight bearing and you're fighting against gravity, GTN did a video about this about a year ago I think and they found that overall running burned more calories than swimming.
@darrenkelly72714 жыл бұрын
@@peterritchie2554 I would argue swimming raises the heart rate as much as, or more than running. Say your a beginner at running, your pace won't be that fast. But with swimming, you will thrash out length after length with your heart pounding. Again it's all personal preference, but if we can do both swimming and running that we'll be calorie burning furnaces.
@20shourya3 жыл бұрын
@@darrenkelly7271 just to add my two cents :) I have never been able to run because I found it too boring or strenuous. This year I took up swimming, and for the past 3 months have been in the pool pretty much every day of the week. Last night, because the pools are now shut again, I went for a long walk, but in the middle of it, felt like running, and have to admit I managed to run for about 7 minutes without feeling any discomfort. I think swimming has helped build my stamina in addition to also shedding about 8 kilos of weight in this time. My thighs and calves have never been this muscly! So, in a weird turn of events swimming seems to have prepared me for running haha. After the lockdown I can't wait to enjoy both!

Run 5km (3 miles) 5 times a week and eat 1200 calories a day. Keep it mostly protein and avoid carbs. Men you will loose weight at any weight. Gyms memberships are good because it does rain. I also work shiftwork and it not safe for me to run on the streets at 3am. The only people running around here at 3am are people running away from the cops. I highly advice buy a quality per of running shoes. I mean real running shoes design for runners. You need to go to a sports store and ask for them. You know they are real running shoes because they will feel very springy and different then normal sneakers. This is a must if you are running on hard surfaces. A good pair will set you back about $200USD but you can find cheaper ones if you buy the previous years design. Buy the best pair you can afford. Your ankles will say thankyou.

Thankfully, I didn’t lose too much fitness and I’m back to training to increase my pace. I can manage 5-6km running without stopping, now I want to get fast.

If you want to loose weight, be a little hungry everyday. And when you are hungry make sure to not grab that snack but wait until some proper food is available. Running to do anything but fun is silly. Have fun the rest will happen.

well I'm surprised to find out that I actually lose 0.5-0.7kg every time after running for 21.3km I believe the loss are from water lost through respiration and breathing, but more from the actual "burning" of fuel as the body converts what we ate into energy... and in breaking down glucose we get CO2 (which we exhale), H2O and ATP for the muscles What a bizarre thought, that we get lighter with every exhale, just from expelling the carbon that came from the carbohydrates we eat

After a year of training all I can say is that you aren't training! You are just going through the motions but you are definitely not training. To train you need to have incrementally harder goals (10% every 3-4 weeks).
