Even military people didn’t have this much insight, I’ve seen their camera equipment and their presenters lol. This is incredible man. Idk if you'd find it relaxing. Depending on how deep the hot tub is, you might drown. Gasoline has a lower density and specific gravity so you'd sink, not float. Also, it's typically the fumes from gas that burn outside of a combustion chamber, so if it DID ignite, you could push your head under the surface and theoretically not burn. At least, as long as you could hold your breath.

Thanks for the awesome videos. I remember when I was in VF-74 an F4 squadron in the 70s that it was explained to me that if you had a 55 gallon drum of JP5 with an open top and flipped it upside down you could not empty it as fast as an F4 uses fuel in afterburner. Also as a departure controller later in my Navy career we called the tankers, at the time KA-6s, Texaco, i.e. “Texaco 11 oclock, 10 miles”. Your vidoes bring back so many great memories. During a space shuttle launch they always said that the shuttle is using enough fuel to drain an Olympic sized swimming pool in about 25 seconds. I haven't run numbers on that but that's some gnarly fuel consumption, no wonder they have to have these crazy fuel pumps with a flowrate that you can't believe.

I worked at Boeing-St. Louis and spent a year or two in F-18 fwd-fuselage where this refueling probe was installed. The mechanism that extends and retracts the refueling probe is a complicated collection of parts with many bell-cranks and adjustable links that are all interconnected and when you adjust one it affects all the others. It has to be rigged perfectly so something un-wanted doesn’t happen like the probe coming down on a closed refueling probe door or the probe extending when the door is still closed. Or worse the probe doesn’t come out at all, although, if I remember right, there was a way to explosively deploy the probe. There was this one guy who worked there and for 20 years or so, all he did was install and rig the refueling probe. He was the only person, on the shop floor at Boeing, who totally understood how the probe worked and how to rig it so it worked every time. On day there were a group of Navy pilots, probably there to pick up a batch of new airplanes, walking down the aisle and saw him working on the probe. One stopped and came up to this guy and shook his hand. He wanted to thank him for when he was in the middle of the ocean, away from the carrier, and the only way to get back was for the refueling probe to work properly and not malfunction, it always worked. The pilot wanted to to thank this guy (and I forget his name, it’s been 30 years) for doing a good job.

""Sensor contact." Whatever that is..." Our B-52s used to have a thing called AN/APN-49 radar beacon. It was some sort of homing beacon to help find the tanker. Maybe that is what they mean by "sensor contact." Does anyone know how the AN/APN-49 radar beacon worked? Maybe it was another system.....it was a long time ago.

@@rael5469 I usually hear "sensor contact" from the UAS and larger aircraft. The fighter bubbas usually say RADAR contact, but they've recently started with this "sensor contact" nonsense. I prefer "contact" or "sweet lock" myself but that's just the squid in me.

@@rael5469 Where I work we have a couple of anchor tracks. If the aircraft headed to the tanker asks, or there's a bunch of traffic near the tanker, then I'll give the receiving aircraft the squawk code of the tanker and they use whatever gadgets they have to assist in finding the tanker. I think the UAS say "sensor contact" because there's nobody in the aircraft so maybe they can't say "traffic in sight" or "visual" because they don't really see the traffic? But I'm just guessing. "Got 'em on the fish finder" is a favorite along with "SEE YA!" 🙄 Maybe Pail @growlerjams can do a medium-dive on the instruments and show us how they display traffic around the aircraft.

Old KC-130 guy here. F-4’s and A-6’s took beaucoup gas, but your bird-geeze. Our fuselage tank held about 18K gallons and the wings and external tanks (if equipped), the rest. A-4’s and AV-8’s took way less and no IFR pumps, (Inflight Refueling Pump), just normal pressure lest we blow them up like a balloon. CH- 53E’s also, but way slower, 105KIAS and below 10,000 ft. We did transpacs, translants and transcons in formations of up to five tankers. Great times. Passing gas. Texaco in the sky. But very slow, 280KTAS and at about 20,000 ft. Great video.

It's funny, because the US is literally the only country in the world that doesn't use litres (it's NEVER spelt liter in English). Recently discovered your channel and working my way back through its history. Caught my eye when you were flying off CVN-71 (my favorite president). Tried to do the math in advance using volume of a hot tub, density of JP-5, etc. and was off half a hot tub. Forgot to factor in fuel burned during refuel but had no idea what your consumption rate would be anyway. Understand this was a few years ago, and you're an instructor now, hopefully teaching the next generation to be at least half as good as you. FLY NAVY🇺🇸

When I was in the Air Force in the 1980s we used JP-4 and JP-7 (for SR-71). JP-4 was nasty stuff (high vapor pressure, easy to ignite when spilled) so much so the Air Force stopped using. We never used JP-5 as far as I remember.

Except it would have cost quite a bit more for all the ramp and hangar redesigns. The A330 is a quarter again bigger (Wider, Heavier, etc) than the US based tankers which was one of the reasons it was rejected (it did not meet that spec) to replace the KC-135. Yes, hindsight, Boeing has been stepping on its private parts for 10-20 years, but if they EVER get back to an engineering business model, it will return, fingers crossed.
