The Black Country Museum depicts the historical Christmas period of those times.They were hard times,particularly for women and children, who were dependent on whether they had a father who brought his wage home,or drank it and gambled it away,leaving their family with little or nothing to live on.There was a lot of heavy drinking and fighting.Living conditions were poor,and many fled their rented hovels when they could no longer pay the rent,called a moonlight flit.So Christmas for many was just another day,and those who wanted to make it special did so by making home made decorations.Hence the lack of lustrous baubles.Christmas in the dark industrial areas of the north and midlands was more Dickens than Jane Austen.The museum,quite rightly reflects that.

It's such a great museum, we want to go back as soon as possible.

I live about half an hour's walk away from the Black Country Museum, and first visited it not long after it opened when I was a child. Lots of things have been filmed there over the years including the film Stan and Ollie, which I think used the pub in its opening scenes. Dudley Zoo is next door (the castle dates back to the 11th century and is supposed to be haunted by a grey lady), we used to go there for my birthday treat every summer. The buildings have all been brought to the museum from around the area, and the museum is constantly growing in size. They have special Christmas open evenings which sell out very quickly. Enjoying your films a great deal.

Thanks so much! Oh yes, we watched Stan & Ollie about a month ago and noticed right away that they filmed all over the Black Country Living Museum, it was great.

Another nice film Kirsten,I'm afraid there is very little Christmas atmosphere anywhere in England now,which is probably why so many of us go to the markets in Germany.

In reverse order.Loved the Helter skelter.I agree with you about Peaky Blinders,not for me.Perhaps not much Christmas stuff as it was a working class village,too poor.I loved Joergs comment about the whale,I mean Fish and Chips.It looked freezing,thermals with trousers needed.Do you use thermal innersoles.They are brilliant A pound,foil backed.Aldi of £shopAnd the old buses.There is an old tv series called Sykes.(Eric Sykesand Hattie Jaques)A man and his sister run their bus like an airline.I think you would like the gentle humour.

It was nice to sort of dive back in the ye olde days... But I was also astonished not to find more Christmas decorations. What a pity.
@KirstenJoerg5 жыл бұрын
We didn't really expect more decorations, just more Christmas spirit in general. As it should show how people lived during Victorian times and after the First World War, those working class people simply had no money for lush decorations like most of us have nowadays.

I loved this.... The first room was, just like my grannies with the black range fire.... Happy memories for me as I used to go to my grannies after school it was next to her cottage so I would always be greeted with a hot bowl of stew and dumplings in the winter... I loved it.. Happy times ♥️thankyou... I really think you should have a TV program called '' 'escape for a weekend .' '' .. Then you could show cottages you stay in and everything that goes with a brilliant weekend break ring the BBC now 😂😂😂

Hi Kirsten. If you want Christmas at the Black Country museum you need to go to their gas lit Christmas carol evenings, they have candles more decorations a big funfair near the school house and roasted chestnuts 🌰 etc. I also think they should make it more Christmassy x
