Now that the rock is gone, we move some earth (once again) and test out our new DIY water level to grade our house site terrain. Jon decides to get ready for some homebuilding supplies by fixing the pallet forks he once broke with the skid steer.

You really did a great fix on the fork! Unique water level system. Oh the high and low areas are so varied! Good job to level. Who knew this is the way to do it? I'm never too old to learn........

Great video as always. You probably already know, when you are pouring liquid from a bottle, if you swirl it round, when you pour it creates a sort of vortex and air can go in through the vortex so the fluid pours out more easily. Makes it fun too 🙂

you have successfully fixed your forks. just keep in mind that the forks are no stronger than they were originally, you just moved the stress point a bit.

John a suggestion. When you are compacting with the skid steer fill your bucket up with dirt it makes it heavier . Good job.

I'm sure you can not put enough weld on them forks to make them strong enough for your skid steer, maybe not even your tractor. You always push your machines to the limit so bent forks will be the norm on your homestead. I bent the end of mine with my tractor prying telephone poles out of a pile. Love your videos. I need a Meg to help with my work too!

Way to go Jon. You actually taught me something. A few years back I made a water level to set the pole height on my pole barn posts but I didn't use the bucket. Your method is much easier since you don't have to have an extra person to monitor the level at the reference point. Unfortunately I will probable never need to use a water level again. But it is good to learn new things. Happy turkey day!

My version 1 was the same, Tim. This method is a lot better and can be a one-person setup if you don't have your MEG around.

Happy Thanksgiving! Great repair to the forks John. The water level is fantastic and as old as time but still works just as well as it did for building done by the Egyptians way back when. One thing that doesn't work any better today than it did when I went to USN photo school in 1964 is shooting into the sun. Camera angle is absolutely critical.

John & Meg, I know you aren't planning for cranes and concrete trucks going up the driveway to the homesite/permanent house, but pleases keep in mind in the future worse case event of a fire or medical emergency a large vehicle or more will need to be able to access the permanent home site via the driveway, the average fora fire engine is 35' long 8'wide and anywhere from 38,000 pounds to over 50,000 pounds ... Coming from someone who lives in same general type location as you and worked in rural fire service locations and major metro fire service type locations for 15 years please take that into consideration that those types of vehicles may have to make multiple trips in and out in the event of a emergency

You'll be happy to know we established a fire plan with our local fire department before we even bought the property for this very reason. If there were an event, they know what to send to our address and what they're getting into before they dispatch. Definitely step 1 before developing any land with a residence.

Hey Jon great fix on the pallet forks , what diameter wire do you generally use in your welder, also how many hrs do you have on tractor now, seems to be a workhorse, best of luck to you guys
@WalnutsandWineberries
@WalnutsandWineberries Жыл бұрын
Thanks - I use 35 wire (0.035) 95% of the time and if flows a lot better than the 30 wire in my opinion. The RK24 has about 650 hrs now. I've been using the track loader a lot more than the tractor because we are still in the land clearing stages, but the tractor's backhoe is certainly handy.

A cheap and easy way to add color to your water level is kool aid. Just 1 or 2 of the little packets and stir it up and you'll have plenty of color.

I think that's the same way I'd do it to, repair wise. If it didn't work I'd buy a new one and tell myself that it was the cost of in-experience. If it works, far out.
