I spent four days on Mt. Athos in 1988 and it was spectacular. It was the closest I've ever come to feeling like I'd walked through a time portal. You had to apply for a permit (in Thessolaniki) to go out there and I was even interviewed and asked why I wanted to visit Mt. Athos because at the time it wasn't really open to tourists and was primarily for Greek men going there for religious reasons. I basically told them that I was traveling around the world to expose myself to different cultures. It took 2-3 weeks to get the permit so I went to Turkey in the interim. You have to down to the nearest town outside the Athos area and then catch a boat halfway down the peninsula and a bus up to the central "town" of Karyes where they stamp your permit. From there you walked from monastery to monastery and they housed and fed you wherever you went. If I remember right, the 4-day permit cost about $12 US at the time and I could have extended it an additional 4 days while I was out there for no additional cost. If you ever are in the area again, I highly recommend going out there. Of course, some things may have changed since it's over 30 years ago that I was there but I'm sure the feeling of the place hasn't changed.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos It was truly amazing. There was very little electricity (usually only in the areas where visitors stayed although a couple times there was no electricity and I was given a kerosene lantern to take to my room), only one telephone at each monastery in case of emergencies, the roads were little more than rutted tracks, you ate your meals with the monks to the sound of a monk up front who was chanting scripture (in Greek, of course) and you were free to observe their religious services. The monks' days are basically split into three 8-hour sections: 8 hours of work (gardening, building things, repair work, what have you), 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours of prayer and services. One memory that is still crystal-clear in my mind (after 30 years) is sitting at a long solid one-foot deep marble table in the dining hall of Simonopetra monastery and noticing that there was an inch deep depression in the marble at each place where people sat from them placing the metal plates there for centuries upon centuries. Yeah, you would absolutely love the place.

When you are looking for a place, you can show it to people on Google maps and ask them for directions. Also, please consider asking locals for recommendations or at least for feedback and directions on places, before you start your daily adventures. This way, you often end up on a wild goose chase and we don't see sights you start talking about.

16:21 Next time it may be helpful to tap on that red balloon/pin point that indicates where you're trying to go. When you tap on it you will see the actual GPS-Lat/Long coordinates at the top of the screen if they aren't ALREADY at the top. I think I see your coordinates, but there is too much glare so I'm not sure. You can then input these coordinates into your phone or other GPS device and follow. I did this on Google Maps (I'm on a PC now) to get the same image you got. The coordinates (for that pic of the ruins you show) were 43.6375194N, 20.9732759E. Using Google Maps/or Google Earth satellite view and zooming in I got an image, but it wasn't detail enough---too many shadows within the trees, and there wasn't an obvious trail from this view, BUT I wasn't THERE and on foot either. You may have been on top of it, but didn't know it without near exact coordinates.

If you plan staying more in this fascinating country, consider going south to the city of Nis and the valley of Djavolja varoš (Devil's town). The serbian south is worth visiting too: ottoman and roman ruins, forests and unique gastronomy. Btw, since you mentioned Mt Athos, a visit there is a unique experience and the architecture and the vibe of the monasteries is out of this world. There you can meet and discuss with monks of different nationalities, even US. You can go either as a pilgrim or as a traveler, meaning that you can even climb at the top of the mountain with a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. You have to ask for a permit 2 weeks in advance and travel to Ouranoupolis, a seaside town/vacations destination from where you take the ferry to the peninsula. Just bear in mind that the monks there follow the byzantine schedule so you may find yourself eating luch and going to bed in bizarre time. No matter what your religious background is, you will leave this place with inner peace and serenity.
